  2. RIP Amanat / Damini / Nirbhaya

officially london has 6 times more reported rapes than delhi but anyone would agree london is a much safer city for women than our capital at least the police will arrive in 5-10 min to help anyone registered cases, unofficially every state has almost same rates
  3. RIP Amanat / Damini / Nirbhaya

absurd solution since we are neither a communist country like china [max death penalties] or an islamic state which hardly have a good record for women's rights! death penalty for rape will incentivise the criminals to also kill the victims after the attack this will not be the deterrent that most expect no civilised society in the world has capital punishment for any rapes and there is a very good reason for it! fast track courts with speedy closures will have a much bigger impact compensation should be increased to rs. 1 lakh min or 1 year's salary of victim or attacker whichever is more [yes, i'm aware that this sounds very low but the reality is that even less is actually paid out on avg!] full medical / legal expenses without time limits to be paid by the guilty [as reimbursements] over and above compensation for pain and suffering however, it must remain a bailable offence since innocents will get jailed until proven otherwise it will become an easy way to blackmail men and subject to abuse of due process there is a lot of talk about zero jurisdiction policy where rape complaint can be filed at any police station regardless of location this is an excellent idea but should apply to all murders / homicides also nationwide a nationwide toll free hotline could also be setup like they have abroad and educating girls in all schools: http://www.girlshealth.gov/safety/saferelationships/daterape.cfm 'If you think that you or someone you know has been drugged and raped: Don’t blame yourself. The rape was not your fault. Talk to an adult and go to the police station or hospital right away! If you don't have an adult to talk to first, just go to the police station or hospital. Don’t urinate (pee) before getting help. Get a urine (pee) test as soon as possible. The drugs leave your system quickly. Rohypnol leaves your body 72 hours after you take it. GHB leaves the body in 12 hours. Don’t douche, bathe, or change clothes before getting help. Doing these things can remove possible evidence of the rape, such as semen (fluid from a man) or hair belonging to the person who assaulted you. Get medical care right away. Tell the doctor or nurse if you think you were drugged. He or she will give you a urine test right away because date rape drugs leave your body quickly. You will also get a medical exam to make sure you don’t have other injuries. The doctor or nurse will test you for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS, and offer you emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. If the doctor or nurse does not mention testing for STDs or emergency contraception, ask for them. The counselor will help you figure out how to tell your parents/guardians. They may be angry or upset, but only because they care about you and don't want you to get hurt. Getting help and dealing with your emotions is the first step in healing. You can call a crisis center or a hotline to talk with a counselor. One national hotline is the 24-hour National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (1-800-799-7233) or 1-800-787-3224 (TDD). Feelings of shame, guilt, fear, and shock are normal. It is important to get counseling from a trusted professional.

i have bought one from rediff yesterday: http://shopping.rediff.com/product/apple-tv-hd-md199-ll-a-3rd-latest-gen-1080p/11400030 is this a good deal? does this work in india? i know i should have asked these before buying but anyways!
  6. Apple TV

ok, i ordered 3rd gen ps: i noticed the price went up by rs. 1 k a few days after i ordered...
  7. Apple TV

given that streaming media is going to be slow for video on 2mb/s, is there anyway to download content before viewing?
  8. Apple TV

my concern was that apple requires min 8 mbps wifi speed while i only have 2 mbps has anyone installed this yet? if so what speed is your wifi?
  9. New Business Ideas To Share

i have a bunch of ideas for ecommerce sites / mobile apps but they require about rs. 5-10 lakhs EACH as capex upfront and will take at least 1-2 years to become sustainable [cash flow positive]: registry for aspiring actors like they have abroad so they can upload their portfolio for review by various agencies multiple classified posting - which allows you to put up your ad on the top dozen free sites for india instead of going to each one individually mobile apps for used car valuations so you can check how much a dealer might be trying to overcharge you at the lot itself rather than going home to check multiple sites [ios & android] home delivery / ordering apps for any place that you usually call up currently [ios & android] app for gift certificates for any store that's willing to sell them online [ios & android] there's actually no limit but your imagination really i have vendors and project managers lined up for these but never started since i was too lazy to start looking for funding: you would have to spend a lot of time jumping through hoops for each investor you will have to get rejected dozens of times before ever finding one also need to provide completely meaningless business projections which are wild guesses some would even want you to give up control / design decisions / feature set / scope as a condition its always much harder than you can imagine to get any angel investors in your venture its difficult to find a silent partner who will give you the time needed to fully mature your concept and test it its clear in my head how to build great sites / apps but if they will make any profits is very hard to predict or even provide deadlines / timeframes to reach specified thresholds / benchmarks financially
  10. belated happy diwali everyone! i'm looking for the following in mumbai / vashi: 42" led [not lcd] branded with free wall mount / usb on 0% emi 10" android 4.0 tablet with 3-4mp camera & 3g for under rs. 9-10 k dual sim andriod with qwerty [3-4mp camera] for about $100 [rs. 5-6 k] so far vijay sales @ palm beach gallaria has the best deal for rs. 35 k on haier 42 led but my wife feels that its a low quality brand any other suggestions / stores?
  11. i tried this from my vodafone and just got an error as reply about wrong keyword or something and from my cdma i got: no default configured when i fwd the spam sms. has this fwd worked for anyone else?
  12. its possible the make is not identical but quality of DIGITAL stb should be very similar else it defeats the point of the 'digitalisation' exercise
  13. How to stop SMS spam?

i get 2-3 sms daily on my nokia with vodafone despite getting dnd last year any fix for that handset / sim?
  14. that's a good deal for digital - in mumbai they are asking for rs. 800
  15. but i thought that apple 4g will never work in india so what's the point of paying extra?
  16. i have an ipad2 which i mostly leave at home since i'm afraid of losing it! i always want my phone to have qwerty and push mail and prices for such handset are dropping every quarter maybe a 7" andriod would be more portable but i know i'll just be leaving it at work since i hate carrying stuff unless i'm going out of town or i'll just wait for a 4g andriod tab when they launch my main contradiction is that my fat fingers have trouble on a 7" but 10" is too big to lug around everywhere i go it'll take a decade to have thin, light, foldable andriod tabs that are 10" for under rs. 10 k with 4g ps: i do take my ipad when i fly since i have space in my carry on to begin with but that's every couple of months if i had to fly weekly, then i might reconsider...
  17. i tried it and wanted an sms alert for each f1 race on star sports / espn but that's not possible for tv channels
  18. you are better off with a recorder [e.g, tatasky +] since its cheaper with HD
  19. vodafone is not letting me port out my delhi number on the grounds that i'm roaming in mumbai keep in mind i'm not trying to change the city i just want the port code to start the process in delhi itself the mumbai customer service is also insisting i call the delhi cc number but i don't want to incur roaming charges just to argue with them anyone else have a problem with vodafone port out?
  20. Ecommerce Websites - Good, Bad and Ugly!

i disagree - its not a crime in india but taking any public content without permission of the author is a violation of laws abroad its exactly stealing - copying without permission specially with the intent of profiting from it
  21. i disagree: its only 'cheating' if the operator does not notify you in advance for exsiting subscribers or at the time of purchase of any pack for new users each operator should have the right to charge more during peak days to help reduce congestion or they should stop offering any sms pack below cost let the free market determine the choice of customers i'm even against the arbitrary limit of 5 days / year again mkt forces should let anyone decide on any number of blackout days competition will prevent any single operator from having excessive blackouts nowhere else in the civilised world does any regulator set mobile tariffs not even china! transparency must be maintained to avoid any hidden charges / fees
  22. Medical insurance advise

i have my regular cover from the company and a backup from icici lombard [family floater, critical illnes, topup] most important thing to remember is that until you go through an actual claims process there is very little independent data out there to compare payout / settlement ratio's i only went for lombard since they take card payment over the phone so premiums are hassle free [no forms to fill out, no id or address proofs reqd etc] the policy is couriered to your address and emailed to your id the credit card verifies your name and is a proxy for id but i know that's clearly not a good reason to choose any GIC e.g., lombard claims a 'closure ratio' of over 95% which is very misleading even a rejected claim can be considered 'closed' so anything below 99% is not very good! they refuse to provide any other data over the phone or email like most pvt co. what we need is the irda forcing the insurers to disclose on their sites the avg actual payment ratio [actual payout / total claim] so we know how much is paid for approved claims and avg rejection ratio [total declines / total claims] and avg payment time [days from claim filing to mailing of cheque]
  23. looks good but i doubt it'll work on my 2mbps mtnl wifi i feel it might need 5-10 mb/s at least for HD streaming without freezing / stutter let us know what speed wifi any of you used it on does netflix work in india?
  24. what's the cheapest handset available and from where [which site] that meets the following specs: qwerty side slider [larger keyboard for my fat fingers] capacitive touchscreen [not resistive] dual sim [dual standby] 3 mp + camera with flash [current handset has 2mp and is quite bad] 2,000 + sms capacity [my samsung has only 1k sms storage so i have to keep deleting msgs weekly] resend option for any sent sms [the corby does not have this simple feature!] anything else is not a requirement but a bonus: 3G [data] andriod posting photos to FB directly [can't do this from corby txt due to size limits] google access gps / maps nokia / samsung / blackberry would be preferred for charger compatibility but its not a deal breaker if they are too expensive i have been googling for many days without much luck now most of the models do not seem to be available in india the handsets that are; usually have one requirement missing e.g., http://micromaxrevie...-sim-touch.html has a vertical slider instead of horizontal in case there is nothing that fits this then the one feature that i can live without is the touchscreen the remaining 6 are a must have ...
  25. it seems like it has 2mp camera which my current samsung already has its also single sim so not much point any other options out by diwali? or does anyone know of any way to move my sms to the sd card in the b3210?
