as usual our beloved regulators are taking the stupid way to solve a problem: RBI took a similar route when it wanted to protect existing customers of floating rates loans since banks would mostly raise rates very fast and take a long time to reduce them there were many simple solutions to this discrimination already implemented abroad decades ago - a] all floating loans to be indexed to a certain max spread over specified FD rates of the bank this means that the spread can decrease but never increase [rachet effect] b] all floating loans to be indexed to an independent benchmark NOT controlled by that bank / lender c] removal / ban on all pre-payment penalties to promote refinancing of higher interest floating loans instead the RBI implemented a complex 'base rate' system which still has leakages / unintended consequences finally they are considering banning foreclosure charges more than a year after pushing through base rates similarly for TRAI, instead of banning more than 100 sms/day simply allow the operator to add a fine/surcharge for each sms above the monthly limit this can be split 3 ways between the telco, TRAI, and the customer using pricing to control volume is always a better 'freakonomics' approach than outright bans which induce a greater cost in terms of enforcement / punishment etc. here is an example of increasing fines: 3 k - 6 k monthly sms = rs. 1 / sms surcharge 6 k - 12 k = rs. 2 / sms 12 - 24 k = rs 3 / sms etc. -
i forgot one important issue with rechargable philishave when they run low on battery: the blades can snag on your stubble [that happened to me today!] the key is not to panic or try to use brute force where you may end up ripping your facial hair off and that would be painful... 1. try to switch the power on and off to see if the baldes can complete cutting the hair and hence release the 'grip' 2. if that does not work, try to open the top cartridge [there is usually a button to pop this 'lid'] this will work 99% of the time, always use prayer for the remaining 1-2%

i shave 2-3 times weekly and my gillete blades only last about a month [approx 5 weeks] or roughly 15-16 shaves max

TATA Sky+ HD PVR @3999/- - Is this a game changer for Tata Sky?

i finally got TS+ and despite the installer insisting that we had to stop our regular cable so he could swap the old wire for the TS wire, we finally got both by paying rs. 1 k extra without any bill of course so they could 'pull' the new wire through the walls. though it felt like an illegal payment, due to some absurd reasoning that TS does not permit such wiring work it was worth it not to have any visible wires coming in from any windows which was the only other option. since we stay in a 18 floor building, they did not even need access to the roof to install the dish [my wife refuses to have any ugly contraption visible from our flat / balconies]. they were able to plug into existing dish infrastructure which was super nice. it was all over in about 1-2 hours from the doorbell ringing to the workers leaving which was better than expected. my irritation was with the buying process - there should be an option to simply add on the rs. 1.5 k in additional fixed charges [rs 500 for some box like white device with a bunch of plugs approx 1-2" wide and 3-4" long] and rs. 1 k for the initial recharge / top up for activation and subscription. we went for the ala carte pricing and got about half a dozen english channels: star world hd star movies hd fox crime espn star sports ananda [bengali for the wife] we plan on adding: fx axn zcafe bbc entertainment but the sms ADD feature is not working for our primary mobile # we also tried to download the supposedly free iphone app but were asked for payment authorisation so we cancelled it there seems to be a limit on the number of series you can setup for recording and we reached that on the 1st day of use! but it seems kind of absurd when we have 97% free space - why should there be ANY limit? just keep recording till the space runs out. i think we had about half a dozen series recording set up after which we could only record individual episodes the timings were also off: simpsons started almost a min before the recording and law & order started over 5-6 min later which was annoying and might be a channel issue rather than TS+ how do you save 'bookmarks' or chapters so that you can resume watching a recording a few days later? we can do that on our older DVR [lg and panasonic] so it should not be a big deal is it hard to make DTH interactive? we should be able to add or delete channels from the STB alone instead of using our mobiles i loved the fact that 2 simultaneous channels could be recorded like TiVo and oldest watched episodes would be automatically deleted if we ran out of space while the unwatched ones would be kept - i wish our older DVR had those options too i would also like the following channels in HD: star sports zee cafe all movie channels surprisingly i can't make out much difference on my LG plasma between SD STB [digital] and HD [DTH] other than the aspect ratio [no more stretching] of course there is a huge difference between analog and digital cable best value for money so far in PVR: lg was 160 gb for rs. 15 k [singapore] = rs. 94 / gb in 2009 panasonic was 250 gb for rs. 16 k [hong kong] = rs 64 / gb in 2010 TS+ was 380 gb for rs. 6.5 k = rs 18 / gb in 2011 the PPV / pay per 'event' option is fibe for regular DTH but obsolete for recorders since VOD would always be better for the same content - why would you watch anything live when you can watch the recording as you please [excluding live / breaking news of course] now we can finally not renew our subscription to 70mm for dvd rentals since their service & selection is quite bad - just record from the movie channels! i'll still rent from big flix since i like watching the bonus features and commentary on dvds but probably half as many discs. the dvd rental stores don't realise DVR will make them obsolete and reduce piracy over the next few years. -

has anyone bought / used these yet? if so pls provide any feedback / reviews for india -
no doubt steve has a 'great brain' but that was not the point i made above - he was NOT original! a better analogy of xerox to apple would be hollywood to bollywood: a large number of bollywood movies copy foreign scripts / shooting styles / camera angles / special effects / editing tricks / dialoges / melodies etc and repackage them for a wider domestic audience that has never seen this content before and while there are superficial tweaks in the plot or characters so they make sense for our movie watchers, it can hardly be called 'original' or 'innovative' but obviously there is a creative element involved in all the costumes / sets / acting styles etc which have to be different but this would be making a virtue out of necessity [like the 'mumbai spirit' after any tragedy]
-
absolutely not true - originality is alive and well in the world outside of apple! but henry ford built the world's first production line allowing mass production of cars that would have been otherwise unaffordable for the masses - apple is hardly affordable in fact its always been positioned as a premium product for a high end market! ford was MORE innovative than jobs. no one is making this claim - being the first to implement an idea is great but apple was NOT the first for most of its products if not all. if you paid attention to the xerox parc article you would see that all the greatest innovations claimed by apple had already been implemented! it was not something on paper .... you mean 'wright' brothers and they were the first to make a functioning prototype but not to make it commercially viable - however they were still MORE innovative than apple! you are correct on 2 points which is a more accurate analogy to what apple did [linux and carts] however completely wrong on the other two: if dams were being used to only store water then your comparison is correct however if they are also being used to generate power then its significantly different than what apple did with xerox. same applies to CFL vs bulbs - apple produced a different shaped bulb in a different colour but did NOT change the underlying technology in any meaningful way since CFL is technologically different than incandescents. bulbs to CFL is more innovative then xerox to apple. wrong again [Originality is NOT translating concept] - this is not MY opinion but the dictionary's: apple did NOT translate ANY concept - xerox did! copying implemented ideas is not an example of INDEPENDENT thought [at least in technology] and the same applies to: apple was completely EVOLUTIONARY when it copied xerox and not at all REVOLUTIONARY from a pure technology perspective [you should really read the articles above since i'm just repeating the same points here] pls note the most important part of the definition above 'substantial positive change compared to incremental changes' for sure it does! no company is perfect and neither is any leader so lets not get carried away: http://www.wired.com...ery_apple_flops there is always room for improvement anywhere [but that is NOT the primary point of my reply here so don't obsess on this footnote - consider it an aside]. the primary point is that neither steve or apple were ORIGINAL - just read up on history and facts...

does that make it the cheapest 7" capacitive tablet in the market? waiting for one with built in 3g [sim slot] instead of external usb dongle
-
while steve jobs is a great leader - its a mistake to consider him 'original' http://linuxrants.com/?p=1467 http://semiaccurate....e-time-machine/ most of apple's greatest 'innovations' have been blatantly copied from other companies [like Xerox PARC] and repackaged with much better marketing http://www.infoworld...eas-os-wars-046 make a list of the biggest leaps made by apple and see who invented them first: http://www.cracked.c...ve-it-away.html http://www.nytimes.c...le+xerox&st=nyt should i go on? http://blogs.telegra...e-a-difference/ or is this enough? http://unweary.com/2010/09/what-left-xerox-parc.html

Cheapest USB Wireless Broadband Datacards

that sounds like a good deal but pls provide the max speed also -
i have never voted for congress and probably never will but i liked the article http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/arundhati-roy-finds-fault-with-anna-hazare-campaign/articleshow/9694814.cms since it provides some balance to the one sided debate - its absurd to assume that corruption will end even if anna's bill is passed entirely - also while both sides want to reduce corruption, its the method / process which differs. who will watch the watchdog? there are dozens of laws already on the books to fight many types of corruption but the enforcement is missing entirely. how do we enforce existing laws instead of just making more? the argument can't simply be either you support the 'civil society' version of the bill or you must be corrupt yourself, that's just silly ... george bush used this kind of argument after 9/11 - you are either with us or against us. before that it was the 'sith' in star wars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You're_either_with_us,_or_against_us

Reliance Infotel LTE Ready Tablet for Rs 8,000
city02 replied to rajanmehta's topic in Reliance Jio 4G LTE (Prepaid & Postpaid)
the blame is not entirely one sided - our govt and security agencies prefer the lazy way to handle tapping issues. since its an unfunded mandate, they can come up with any arbitrary requirement [can you say blackberry?] that is not required by the govt of any other major democracy [obviously china is out] its not like america does not need security or access to communications but they have the infrastructure in place to fully capitalise on intercepting communications which we don't can any one name a single terrorost caught ONLY due to blackberry or 3g interception? there is always some supporting evidence that is incriminating... blocking technology rollout on security grounds is like saying since terrorists can use car bombs, we should ban the sale of any more cars unless GPS tracking is installed for 'security' reasons on ALL vehicles in the country! -
