TATA’s Unending Quest For A Telecom Strategy
Karthik R replied to kesav's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Thank you Kesav for the article, which sums up Tata's telecom predicament well I am sure of two things at this point - 1. The GSM telecos are never going to surrender the spectrum held in 900Mhz band. All the half hearted actions by TRAI will be going futile. 2. I will be one of 800,000 pissed off subscribers if they wound up business in Kerala circle one fine morning and do the "hand over" Their (or all CDMA players in this matter) current pricing of EVDO is highly objectionable, they did not pay huge amounts of money like GSM operators did in the 3G auction, still it comes upward of 50p/Mb. Also EVDO coverage expansion in even Tier-I cities is been undertaken at snail's pace. -

Here goes my first one here A young blonde woman is distraught because she fears her husband is having an affair, so she goes to a gun shop and buys a handgun. The next day she comes home to find her husband in bed with a beautiful redhead. She grabs the gun and holds it to her own head. The husband jumps out of bed, begging and pleading with her not to shoot herself. Hysterically the blonde responds to the husband, "Shut up...you're next!"

Friend, I dont think it is possible to keep the Tata Docomo's (or any other in this regard) gprs data active 24x7 for 30 days. It will eventually time out and the data connection will snap. Else one need to keep it frequently refreshed, which can be cumbersome. Btw in case more data is consumed, they offer 8Gb pack for Rs.149. -
Apple has signed a non-exclusive agreement with Verizon (unlike the five-year exclusive tie-up they had with AT&T for the GSM models), so it will be floating in CDMA markets elsewhere. They surely will have launch plans for India, which boasts of a 100 million CDMA base. Same the case with China Telecom. Also expect it to feature in the high end segment with a Rs.35000 price tag.

2G Scam: Supreme Court Quashes 122 Licences issued in 2008
Karthik R replied to csmart's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Violation of spectrum policy began in '03: Sibal NEW DELHI: Telecom minister Kapil Sibal on Friday released excerpts of the findings of the Shivraj Patil one-man committee (OMC) report on the 2G spectrum scam, dragging the NDA too into the list of alleged wrongdoers and policy violators. While no names were divulged, the summary presented by Sibal concludes that "the decisions taken by DoT in respect of grant of UASL licences (bundled with spectrum), right from 2003 onwards and including the actions in 2007-8, were neither consistent with the decisions of the Union Cabinet dated October 31, 2003 nor the recommendations of TRAI". According to Sibal, 25 specific instances of deviation, inappropriate application and violation of underlying principles of laid down procedure have been found between 2001 and 2009 -- the period that the committee was asked to examine. In addition, 15 specific instances of lack of fairness and transparency in procedure adopted by the DoT in granting licences and allotment of spectrum have been documented. "The entire report will be shared with investigation agencies to determine culpability of all public servants involved in the grant of licences/spectrum between 2001 and 2009," Sibal said. The OMC has also done what the UPA has stoically refused to do so far, acknowledge the TRAI`s "suo moto recommendations of October 27, 2003, which said that additional players should be introduced through a multi-stage bidding process, was also accepted by the Union Cabinet on October 31, 2003". A total of 208 UASL licences have been issued since 2003, of which 51 were issued between January 2004 and March 2007. Former telecom minister A Raja alone issued another 157 licences. Of the 51 licences issued before Raja, Arun Shourie issued 26 licences during the NDA's term while Dayanidhi Maran awarded 25 after the UPA came to power in May 2004. The UPA also issued 180 out of the total 208 licences after it introduced fresh 28-page UASL guidelines and application forms on December 14, 2005. The OMC does point to the fact that the December 2005 UASL guidelines were "ambiguous regarding preferential shares in calculation of substantial equity". It is unclear why the UPA did not correct the wrongdoings of the NDA especially since it issued fresh guidelines for issuance of UASL in December 2005 - 18 months after being voted to office. The OMC also found that Raja`s decisions of January 2008 regarding change of first-come-first-served (FCFS) definition "was not in tune with extant policy". Yet it has no finding regarding the fact that Raja claimed to have implemented the "no cap" recommendation of the TRAI while in fact placing a cap by selectively awarding 122 LoIs out of 575 applications, which the Delhi High Court in 2009 has found illegal in relation to a petition filed by S Tel. The report finds Raja`s arbitrary advancement of the cutoff date "not traceable either to powers vested in terms of any procedure laid out or satisfies the requisites of law, in particular, the principles of objectivity, fairness of transparency". Infotel plans ambitious LTE launch Reliance Industries Ltd-controlled Infotel Broadband Ltd is working on a plan to launch long term evolution (LTE) — which offers high data speeds — in 700 cities in the first phase of its launch. LTE offers data speeds from 50 mbps to 100 mbps to customers. To achieve this, it has called international companies to make a bid for what would be one of the largest equipment deals in the country. As part of the plan, which it has shared with potential vendors, Infotel will take on the companies offering third-generation telecom services (3G) by offering guaranteed minimum internet data speeds to their customers. It should start services from the end of this year. Infotel has invited international telcos to demonstrate their LTE capability as a precursor to signing orders, expected to be over $2 billion (Rs. 9,200 crore). Companies in the race include Huawei of China, Samsung from Korea, Ericcsson, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks. Companies like Samsung have also been approached for discussion on bulk buying of their tablet PC devices like the Galaxy Tab. Vendors say the company is looking at large bulk deals for devices. The companies have been asked to demonstrate their LTE capabilities from the second week of February -- a clear reflection that it has finally abandoned any plan to launch its services on the WIMAX platform. A spokesperson of Reliance Industries Ltd declined to comment. “We are currently engaged with all BWA (broadband wireless spectrum) winners for offering TD-LTE technology. As the market leader in LTE, Nokia Siemens Networks is at the forefront of driving standardisation, interoperability and commercialisation of TD-LTE,” said Kanika Atri, head of marketing for Nokia Siemens Networks India. "LTE and HSPA are emerging as the dominant standards for mobile broadband globally. Operators in India would benefit from the economies of scale and roaming by deploying these technologies,” said P Balaji, vice president, Ericcson India. Infotel is also talking to leading tower companies to lease 60,000 towers across the country for its pan-India launch in the first phase. It has told vendors it would not like to build any tower. Tower vendors who have had discussions with the company say 70 to 80 per cent of the requirement for Infotel can be met by existing towers. “But considering that the company is looking at providing guarantees of minimum speeds to customers, 20 per cent of their requirement will come from new towers, which have to be constructed by operators for Infotel,” said one. While no deadlines have been given, vendors say the company might start the roll out of its network in the next three to four months and could launch services in some parts of the country by the year end. RIL had paid Rs.4,800 crore for acquiring a 95 per cent stake in Infotel, a company floated by the HFCL group under Mahendra Nahata. Infotel has also paid Rs.12,848 crore to the government towards spectrum fees, when it won pan-India spectrum in the auction of BWA auction held last year. Courtesy : Business Standard

Following is an excerpt from a recent review by Computerworld where they compared the 4G network speeds in the US. While it may not hold true in the Indian context, still we can get a wind of what awaits. The results will put even the ardent WiMax fans to test " Speed tests When I tested Sprint's WiMax network in 10 locations in and around New York City, I was mighty impressed. I recorded a peak download speed of 11.2Mbit/sec., with an average of 4.1Mbit/sec. — about seven times faster than Sprint's 3G service in the same areas. But the results I got in those same locations with Verizon's LTE network blew WiMax away. I recorded an astoundingly fast peak download speed of 26.1Mbit/sec., with an average of 13.3Mbit/sec. — more than three times faster than Sprint WiMax. That's much better than you're likely to get from a public Wi-Fi network at a hotel or Internet café, or even wired networks in many private homes or small offices. Even more remarkable was the difference in upload speeds: Sprint's WiMax network poked along at an average 41Kbit/sec., while Verizon's LTE network was more than a hundred times faster in my tests, uploading an average of 5.5Mbit/sec. Such speeds are invaluable for those who upload lots of data, such as for creating and editing Web sites or transferring video files. Verizon's 4G LTE network also had lower latency in my tests than Sprint's 4G service, which translates into smooth streaming videos. A measure of how long it takes the network to respond to a request, the 4G LTE network had a latency of 70 milliseconds, 37% better than the 112ms latency for Sprint WiMax. A word of caution: I can only report the results I got at several specific locations in my area. If you're in a different part of the country (or even at a different location in the same general area), your results might be different. But based on my own tests and those I've seen from other testers around the country, I think it's safe to say that Verizon LTE is blazing fast. " Courtesy : Computer World

The Most Awaited MNP Finally Introduced!
Karthik R replied to SumitVerma's topic in Mobile Number Portability (MNP)
CDMA is what brought me here, to this dear forum, in the first place. At my locality, I enjoy full 1x and EVDO coverage, the call/data tariff is very much economical or reasonable. Also I have invested significant amounts in purchasing cdma handsets. So no way am I going to port away. Instead have a plan to shift my mother's number from Airtel to Rcdma or TI to make use of the spare cdma handsets lying idle around. Now, should educate her on the world war roots, how her calls will be securely encrypted and to be wary of qualcomm. -
