India's 3G Networks To Boost Mobile Data Traffic In Asia
Karthik R posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Singapore, Nov 05, 2010 - According to ABI Research's latest forecasts, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to consume 2,400 petabytes of mobile data annually by 2015, an estimated 23% of global data traffic, close behind North America with an expected consumption of 3,100 petabytes. However, mobile Internet services are forecast to generate $80 billion in Asia-Pacific, which only accounts for 14.5% of global revenue. The disparity between high data consumption and low revenue contribution will largely be attributed to India's emerging 3G networks, which will be major contributors to Asia-Pacific's overall mobile traffic. "In emerging markets such as India where penetration of personal computers is low, mobile Internet on handsets will be popular among consumers due to its affordability and portability," says ABI Research research associate Fei Feng Seet. Competition is expected to drive mobile data revenue down; seven private operators successfully secured Indian 3G licenses in September 2010. Tata DoCoMo and Bharti Airtel will be launching their 3G networks in India by year-end, joining in the action with state-owned operators BSNL and MTNL. "Competition for 3G subscribers in India is expected to be intense," adds research practice director Neil Strother. "With Tata's plan to open 4,000 3G retail outlets, and the other private operators to launch by next year, it will be a buyers' market where consumers demand faster speeds, larger download volume, and lower price." Mobile Internet service revenue will surpass $198 billion globally by 2015 with a 15.7% CAGR from 2009 to 2015, lagging in comparison to the expected 47% CAGR in global 3G data traffic volume which will eclipse 10 exabytes by 2015. Expectedly Big 3 of GSM opt for 3G strategic intra-circle roaming alliance
Karthik R replied to ravi_patent's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
That is a very good question! In all likelihood they are going to share 3G spectrum only for data users, who make a insignificant part compared to vast majority of voice-alone users. And the home operator which own 3G spectrum will charge a premium when the subscriber of other network access its service, it will be like what they do while in roaming. What do you think? -
A happy and colourful DIWALI to all RIMwebians. Go make some noise

Expectedly Big 3 of GSM opt for 3G strategic intra-circle roaming alliance
Karthik R replied to ravi_patent's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Airtel have not won the 3G spectrum in Kerala through the concluded auctions and still had send a SMS yesterday stating - Get ready for the 3G experience with Airtel. To be launched in Kerala soon.. Now we know how. The incumbents have entered into an agreement to get a pan-India presence! I was hoping that the Tatas - Rel - Aircel does the same but now it seems that they are forging an tie-up with State telecos, BSNL and MTNL to offer 3G services in the circles where it have not won the airwaves. -
TRAI Seeks Views On Blocking Stolen Mobiles
Karthik R posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
The country’s telecom sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has released a consultation paper relating to blocking of IMEI for lost or stolen mobile handsets. It has sought views from service providers and other stakeholders on ways to block lost or stolen mobile phones, to curtail the illegal handset market, discourage handset theft and protect consumer interest. IMEI is a unique serial number which identifies the handset. This number is stored in the equipment identity register (EIR) database of a service provider. Currently, there is no method to block a mobile phone in case it is lost or stolen. Service providers can only block the SIM card, in case a lost or theft complaint is registered with them. The only other way is that the mobile phone owner has to write the unique identity number or the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the phone and in the eventuality of it getting lost or stolen can report it to the police for it to track the hand set. In case of theft of a handset, the service provider can flag its IMEI number and can block the handset in its own network. There are no figures available for the lost or stolen mobile hand sets, but industry experts say the number is alarming. In 2004, Trai had made a similar attempt, which failed as a number of service providers did not have the capability to track mobile handsets. The consultation papers has sought views on the cost and funding aspects of centralised EIR, the process that should be adopted for blocking the hand set and the unblocking procedure if a lost phone is found. If the EIRs of service providers are shared through a centralised database, the lost or stolen mobile can be prevented from use in all networks. Idea's balance transfer service is available in JK, Punjab, Mah.. What about others? Is it a circle specific service? -
I share the same views as expressed by sougatadc. This is NOT an exhaustive list of members who have contributed the most to this forum. This poll is totally unnecessary and if so anyone desire, the names should be nominated by say more than 10 members (like we do with the oscars and grammy). But I wont be voting for any particular person as I have imbibed knowledge at some point or other from all the GURUS.

India Adds 2.5 Lakh CDMA Data Card Subscribers Every Month
Karthik R replied to kesav's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
I share the view expressed in the article - CDMA data offerings - EVDO where ever it is available, wont face much of a competition from 3G when it is finally launched by GSM operators as they have a very strained user quantity constraints as well as have to accomodate voice subscriber in the spectrum. It must be the same that tempted BSNL to foray into the sector, though they dont seem to be dead set or serious about it. -
hey Kesav just saw this post now as it got buried with others when the forum was revamped well ''it is not RUIM based'' when I checked with the dealer. - Next time feel free to PM me for any queries.

Mobile Number Portability service from November 25
Karthik R replied to Arun's topic in Mobile Number Portability (MNP)
It will be interesting to see the kind of offers the operators give to the customers who jump stables. I think that they will reach a CONSENSUS and not compete to a cut-throat level which will dig into the already strained revenue. High ARPU users will be pursued of course. -
