Very Interesting !! Let us hear it from experts on its robustness, usability & security rather than passing trivialising comments on the onset. -
....It is just that theory and practical considerations are vastly different in Indian Scenario. My dear friend, I never felt that you're criticizing me even in my dream. I want to make only one thing clear here is except for VORA, whatever I've quoted on 3G-CDMA on this thread are the things which is happening on the ground in India. On the contrary, whatever Ive quoted on 3G-GSM on this thread are mostly my best expectations in the current scenario which at the best I can only hope and pray itll become true. My purpose of these posts is to plead to everyone to look at the practical scenario of 3G-GSM in India rather than being lured by theoretical information thrown in the websites of the operators .....If any operator has a technology like CDMA which enables it to offer high speed data on mobile and if it is able to do so within the spectrum allocated to it, there is no bar against it in the license conditions...... I feel really this need to be clarified. Never ever DoT officially allowed any CDMA operators to start 3G in the mobile phones. CDMA operators slowly and very slowly moved to this level of providing EVDO on handsets by playing cards very close to their chest. Initially they started providing EVDO on USB modems in the pretext of increasing broadband penetration. DoT saw this as an opportunity to increase broadband penetration since GSM operators didnt consider 3G on USB modems as a serious competition and didnt complain to DoT. This is the fundamental reason why CDMA operators started and continued their 3G operations only on USB modems for a long time. As the days passed by, when GSM operators started providing EDGE on their mobile phones which has theoretical speed greater than CDMA 1X, CDMA operators approached DoT to get clarification on whether they can start EVDO on mobiles which can provide speed greater than EDGE on the spectrum which they own currently. But during these discussions, they never used the word 3G in order to avoid the back-lash from GSM operators. DoT saw an opportunity to bring in 3G without creating friction by clarifying that operators can do whatever they want with the given spectrum. This is the fundamental reason why every CDMA operator promotes EVDO in other names like High Speed Internet Access, 3G-like speed etc., instead of using word 3G. TATA has started EVDO on mobiles offically only few months back( may be start of this year) and was followed by Reliance. BSNL and MTS started just only 2-3 months back. Till the date of allocation 3G-GSM spectrum to GSM operators, no CDMA operator was in a position to promote 3G-CDMA in mobiles in a big way for the reason not to topple their dizzy EVDO business which was moving in an unstable equilibrium with respect to legal clarity. With the perspective of Reliance Customer, how can they evaluate EVDO V/s HSDPA when Reliance is not offering EVDO except on few OMH Sim Mobiles.......... I didnt mean that every individual has to buy both handsets, test it and compare it. Just wait for 3 months, speak to people, read articles, read reviews from those who have used these technologies from varied operators then make a judgement. Just to reinforce universal truths, 'Haste is waste!' 'Look before you Leap'

I'm not defending any technology here. Just making the members aware of the facts for making meaningful decision. There's lot of unworthy hype about GSM-3G in the air which I feel should be measured against facts so that members will not fall prey. EVDO provided by the CDMA players on mobiles till the date of allocation of GSM-3G spectrum(1st september 2010) was quasi-illegal. That's the main reason why CDMA players were not able to promote EVDO in handsets as you might have wanted. My sincere request to anybody for that matter is please wait for sometime(say 2-3 months from now)to measure HSDPA performance and coverage against EVDO performance and coverage in India before passing any judgement. If you want to shift because of voice service issue(either with coverage/customer relation/performance), please go-ahead immediately on MNP. If you want to shift for the word "3G" and data service, I request you to postpone it and make judgement after 3 months.

Mobile Number Portability: Things to Know source :: http://www.techtree.com/India/Features/Mobile_Number_Portability_Things_to_Know/551-113305-899.html TRAI has its act cut out from Monday. TRAI should have a separate team to monitor the MNP during ramp-up and should have whip to lash out at the trouble creating donors. -
I understand this issue but it'll be solved with VORA(Voice over Rev. A) update on EVDO Rev. A on the network side. I feel operators will go for this update on the n/w side due to competition from HSDPA. Unless VORA is applied, EVDO players cannot provide video calls. I'm not sure whether EVDO Rev. A handsets should go for an update or not.

Welcome buddy.... I'm really happy that you had no hiccups in setting up the device for first time. I'm really surprised to know that you pay only Rs.250+tax for unlimited EVDO when rest of the people pay Rs.750+tax. How come? Please share your thoughts on this device when you across something interesting to share. -

A very good piece at a very good price. Please don't forget it's yet another OMH handset from stable of Samsung. http://www.flipkart.com/samsung-mpowertxt-m369-mobile-mobcs7bpn2fyg33z Samsung continues to disappoint Indian customers in one aspect though, This phone is yet again EVDO Rev. 0 when almost all EVDO towers(except for BSNL towers) in India breathes EVDO Rev. A. Come on Samsung !! When LG and other Chinese made handsets are OMH EVDO Rev. A capable, we expect something more from Samsung. Please don't disappoint us by giving Rev.0 phones.

Please Suggest a good CDMA Handset with EVDO
kesav replied to mailgujarat's topic in Handset Suggestions
Absolutely, I feel HSDPA(GSM-3G) coverage never going to match EVDO(CDMA-3G) coverage on foreseeable future. It's just for the reason, deploying HSDPA is quite costly affair(more towers needed to be erected) which I feel operators will not go beyond Tier-II cities in the initial years of operation. EVDO expansion is quite easy just by upgrading current CMDA towers with new hardware. I don't agree that in HSDPA, you've more options in 5K-10K range because all those handsets in that range marketed as 3G has inferior version of 3G called UMTS(WCDMA) which has just speed of 384 Kbps. This speed is totally no match for EVDO Rev. A at 3.1 Mbps Don't buy GSM-3G handset just by hearing term 3G but always look for the version of GSM-3G it supports. Please avoid GSM-3G handsets which supports only UMTS(WCDMA) and has speed of 384 Kbps. Please go for the GSM-3G handsets which support minimum of HSDPA 3.6 Mbps which can be considerd as competitor for EvDO I recommend everyone to buy handsets which support HSDPA 7.2 Mbps or above which surely can give better experience than EvDO Rev. A Now, looking at the handsets available in the market which can support HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and above, almost everything is priced above 10K In nutshell, To experince GSM-3G which is better than CDMA-3G(EVDO) you've to spend more than 10K. Today we all know the EVDO coverage of all the CDMA operators but nobody knows what will be 3G coverage of any operator other than BSNL/MTNL. Guys, now you can decide for yourself at the moment which is riskier proposition. -

BlackBerry keeps extending its deadline, now asks for Jan 31, 2011 source :: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article857368.ece?homepage=true This is totally irritating.....How many extensions????? Govt. should now come up with some sort of fine which will be compounded daily starting from Jan 1, 2011 till the solution is provided by RIM. RIM has taken Indian govt. totally for granted. -

BSNL Slashes Its 3G Internet Further
kesav replied to in.raghav's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
@Vikas Mahajan Please look at post above your post. The issue may be with backend server of WB telecom circle. Normally, GPRS unlimited recharge will only give you unlimited GPRS and not unlimited 3G. -
My dear friend, I feel above is certainly not a current age statement. Spearate devices for separate functions is thing of a past. Majority wants converging devices.

Hoarding is possible when auction happens next time. The biggest drawback in the auction method lies in hoarding. Best method to avoid hoarding is subscriber linked method but it requires strong scientific way to verify declared subscriber numbers.

Absolutely...... 4G is the way to go for India..... Any day Infotel can apply for USAL and get it. 3G is no way going to survive in India either in EVDO or HSDPA form. Look at the current scenerio of both 3G technologies. EVDO:: 1) Till date no CDMA operator has been provided with extra spectrum for 3G(EVDO), they're using already over utilized 2G(CDMA 1x) spectrum for 3G(EVDO) 2) No spectrum available extra in 800 MHz band 3) TRAI is planing to refarm 800 MHz(take back) and allocate 1900 MHz for both 2G and 3G. Refarming is an activity which needs at least 1 year from now. It means no extra spectrum in CDMA for at least next 1 year 4) Major CDMA operators (read as Reliance & TATA) are torn between the dilemma of HSDPA and EVDO 5) Only advantage for EVDO lies in its ability for low cost and faster deployment and its conducive frequency band for village/town deployments HSDPA:: 1) The winners of HSDPA spectrum are all spectrum starved entities except for Reliance and TATA 2) TRAI is planing to refarm 900 MHz (take back) and hence those operators using 900 MHz (read as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea )need further spectrum to accommodate displaced subscribers 3) There is no clarity on further allocation of 2G spectrum 4) Most of the operators at the time of wining said they'll shift many voice subscribers to HSDPA band rather than using it for data 5) HSDPA in 2.1 GHz is absolutely not conducive for village/town deployment due its enormous cost and low rate of return Just compare the above situation aginst the 4G spectrum 1) 20 MHz unpaired in 4G against just 10 MHz (2 * 5 MHz) paired in HSDPA speaks volume about the price catch which Infotel has won 2) 60 MHz of spectrum is available with the Govt in 2.5 GHz band which will be auctioned next fiscal for 4G 3) Rival technologies(LTE and WiMax) can co-exist in the same band 4) Coverage distance of 4G tower is quite large and very good for both urban/village deployments 5) India is quite right at the point of upcoming commercial deployments of 4G is several countries across the globe which means better scale of economy 6) 4G spectrum is in the hands of business behemoth(read as RIL) with largest cash reserve

Fundamentally the topic header itself is wrong "3G or EVDO?" Come on guys, EVDO is one of the 3G technologies. It's like asking "4G or LTE", "4G or WiMax", "3G or HSDPA". As per the information from all GSM service providers the 3G version to be launched in India is HSDPA. Within HSDPA, there are different versions giving speeds like 3.6, 7.2, 10.2 or 14.4 Mbps. I feel cities will be covered with 10.2/14.4 version and towns with 7.2 version. Villages nobody knows whether it'll covered in the next 5 years at all. So I request admins to change the topic heading to "HSDPA or EVDO". Now, coming to the topic, I feel HSDPA is better technology for cities and EVDO is better technolgy for towns/villages. The reason being HSDPA requires more towers to cover the area than GSM which in itself requires more towers than EVDO. Hence when the towers are close to each other, automatically average farthest distance from tower for any device becomes very minimum which in turn provide better customer experience. Deploying HSDPA is a high cost activity, hence dual tech operators will certainly go for EVDO coverage in towns and villages due its inherent requirement of less towers to cover more sq.km. Dual mode 3G handsets and USB modems is the only way forward. As of today, EVDO coverage is very very high compared to HSDPA coverage. I don't think any operator will be ready to deploy HSDPA outside the district headquarters. They'll test the uptake for next one year before investing heavily on further expansion beyond district headquarters. PS :: EVDO and HSDPA both works in CDMA technology
