  1. AirTel's 3G Roadpath

It looks like 3G deployment from Airtel & Aircel will take longer time than expected. Grapevine says they're in 3G-4G marriage dilemma. They want to deploy both 3G & 4G in a single go rather than doing double work in the circles where they've won both spectrum. Launch by TATA, Reliance, Idea & Vodafone will be faster since they've not won any 4G spectrum.
  2. Telcos want unified security guidelines: AUSPI source :: http://telecomyatra.afaqs.com/news/?sid=2208_Telcos+want+unified+security+guidelines:+AUSPI Good move by AUSPI  Certainly it's function of TRAI to formulate guidelines. In the recent past, in many occasions Ministry of Home and Minstry of telecom unnecssarily takes the job which has to be done by TRAI. Ministry of home can request TRAI in formulating holistic unified scalable telecom security policy instead of poking its nose in haphazard way like ban on Chinese equipments, storing SMS communication for last 6 months, formulation of new security guideles etc., Although all these interventions are meaningful in security perspective, the manner in which it was done one after the other and also without involving TRAI is just unjustifiable and unpardonable. It's advisable for MHA to provide their security objectives to TRAI during the formulation. Nobody understands telecom industry and telecom technologies better than TRAI. Certainly neither MHA nor DoT has capability to make such a holistic telecom security framework and also neither of these ministries are empowered to make policy guidelines without consent from TRAI.
  3. India reviews recent telecom gear import rules source:: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/telecom/India-reviews-recent-telecom-gear-import-rules/articleshow/6769775.cms
  4. I've huawei USB modem which has microSD slot and its specification says it can read upto 8GB. At the moment, I don't have any microSD card but I'm planing to buy one. I've dilemma now on whether to go for 8GB or 32GB. If someone can confirm that I can access 1/4th of the space in 32GB through my reader without issue, I can buy 32GB card itself for being future-proof.
  5. Dear Admins, Kindly move this topic to http://www.rimweb.in/forums/forum/49-indian-telecom-discussion/ folder
  6. Your case is just funny. There could some error in the backend. In TN, you can get 3G speed only if you've recharged with 3G data RCV or post expiry of 3G data RCV.
  7. Please someone answer my question.....
  8. As per current implementation of BSNL in TN circle, All subscribers are considered as both 2G/3G customers. Voice tariff will remain same irrespective of 2G/3G. Data speed differs between 2G and 3G. Instantaneous eligibility of subscriber to use 2G or 3G data speed is determined by data plan currently active in his account. There are separate data plans for EDGE(low cost) and separate data plans for HSDPA(high cost). If someone wants to use EDGE speed irrespective of the location he's in then he can racharge with any of the EDGE data RCV. If someone wants to use HSDPA speed in the locations covered by 3G and EDGE speed in the locations not covered by 3G then he can recharge with HSDPA data RCV. Default data tariff(without any data RCV) for EDGE and HSDPA is same at 1p/10KB. Instantaneous default speed will be depending upon the just expired Data RCV. I felt the above method is quite good and I hope TATA docomo will follow the same method. In the above method, (1) Customer can migrate to any speed at any time by recharging with appropriate data RCV. (2) No profiling or discrimation of customers as 2G and 3G (3) Instantaneous possibility for all customers to use 3G on lauch date just by reacharging with 3G data RCV (4) Voice tariff continues at the same rate(no further confusion for customers like 3G voice tariff etc.,....)
  9. Can I use 32GB microSD card in 8GB microSD card reader? If it successfully acccess first quarter of the total capacity, it's sufficient for me.
  10. Television Orders - TRAI

Is TDSAT dead??? It's just rediculous.....TDSAT finished hearing the case on 20th Sep 2010. Does it need 1 month to write the judgement on such a simple straight forward pro-consumer regulations?? As TRAI is not empowered to penalize the operators, it's TDSAT which has to protect the consumers as per TRAI's regulations against venomous operators. Now TDSAT has become procrastinating channel for any pro-consumer regulation passed by TRAI. As soon as TRAI passes any pro-consumer regulation, Operators approach TDSAT and TDSAT sleeps over the issue for months and by the time it passes judgement, the issue become stale and consumers become frustrated. In the meantime, it brings bad name to TRAI although delay is due to TDSAT. The very purpose of existence of TDSAT(separate arm of judiciary) is to act for telecom&broadcasting consumers and to implement TRAI's regulations in the spirit of natural justice in speedy manner. If it fails to meet core purpose of it existence(speedy justice) then it's better to scrap TDSAT and let the supreme court handle all policy issues of TRAI. Atleast there should be some kind of quarterly review by Supreme Court(led by Chief justice of India) on whether its proxy wings like TDSAT is functioning according to its mandate and take necessary remedial actions.
  11. Here is update from TRAI chairman on MNP. TRAI chairman says and I quote "We are optimistic that it would be implemented within the time frame or a few days later." source :: http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/2g-spectrum-proposal-by-month-end-trai-chairman/112669/on A very good news indeed.....
  12. As if answering to highlighted point (2) above, TRAI says 2G pricing norms by October-end source :: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/trai-norms-on-linking-2g-spectrum-prices-with-3g-in-oct/699623/  TRAI, what about refarming 800 MHz and 900 MHz band ????
  13. PMO dials telecom dept for update on 2G wait-list source :: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/6744925.cms It has become a fashion in Indian Ministries(Particularly Telecom Ministry) to put the things on hold if going gets tougher. Everybody knows that accepting TRAI's path-breaking pro-consumer recommendations and implementing is tough but that doesn't mean that you can put entire nation's telecom growth in pause mode for so long. DoT has been finalizing these recommendations for last 6 months. It's too strange....... DoT has shown similar foolishness as for as VoIP is concerned. TRAI has made recommendations quite long back(may be 2 years ago...) but still DoT is sleeping over it. DoT is playing similar waiting game in terms of auctioning 3G CDMA frequencies. 3G GSM auctions are over and frequencies allocated and operators are starting their operations. Till date no clarity on when 3G CDMA frequencies will be auctioned or at least which band frequencies will be auctioned. Here most affected operator will be MTS because at least other CDMA operators have GSM 2G spectrum(due to which they participated in GSM 3G auction and acquired in some circles). Is it pentaly for taking a more spectrum efficient technology for their implementation? or Is it penalty for rolling-out the services in more circles than any other new entrants? Waiting has become national disease as quoted by one of beloved forum member raccoon(link). But unfortunately it looks like same disease has spread to TRAI. TRAI, one of the benchmark regulators in the world and the pivot around which our telecom industry spiralled to unbeleivable heights has started slipping recently. It commited to DoT to finalize 2 aspects regarding 2G spectrum. (1) Methodology for refarming 800 MHz and 900 MHz band (2) Method for calculating 'current price' of excess spectrum held by incumbents.I see no signs of activities on this front from the regulator. Out of various agencies in the Indian Telecom industry, one and only one agency which people of India still trust and look for is TRAI. This reputation you've earned through your list of path breaking pro-consumer recommendations. Recently, you've been under paid vicious attack from anti-consumer cartels but that shouldn't stop you from moving forward. Never in the history of world, a regualtor has been praised by business houses for making pro-consumer policies. This you know better than any one of us here. keep going..........

  15. Dear Rajanmehta, Telcordia issue is quite old. I completely understand anxiety of every citizen on MNP. Please resist from posting the same news from different sources( I think there are 3 posts exactly saying the same thing but from different sources/websites) since I feel all these sources have been paid to do some sort of campaign against introduction of MNP by vested interests. Let us post only the official communication from Govt. sources/Telcordia/Syniverse next regarding Telcordia issue on this thread. Let we not fall prey and act as channel to paid media campaign.

  18. That's where CAG is pinning DoT. But I'm least surprised about it given the fact of laziness and incapability in our Govt. departments like DoT. But I'm really really surpised about the private foreign investors like Telenor & Etisalat who've bought these ineligible licences without doing proper inspection of the papers.
  19. New Launch: LG 6160 OMH

There are 4 types of CDMA handsets in India which I list below chronologically in ascending order. 1) Non-RUIM handsets - Subscriber can't change the number programmed in the handset on his own 2) Operator locked RUIM handsets - Subscriber can change RUIM but limited to the same operator 3) Open Market RUIM handsets - Subscriber can change RUIM of any operator. voice and SMS inter-operability available but data inter-operability confined to only few operators whose data settings were pre-programmed by handset manufacturer 4) OMH RUIM handsets - Subscriber can freely change OMH RUIM of any operator. inter-operability of data and voice ensured Guru Muzik 519 is category-3 handset, hence MTS vioce & SMS will work but not MTS data. All this transformation has happened only due to sustainable pressure exerted by our forum members on the operators. It's highly important on our part to reject other category handsets and only accept category-4 handsets with MNP coming this November.
  20. Union IT minister to leave on 5-day trip to Russia source :: http://news.in.msn.com/business/article.aspx?cp-documentid=4448581 Will Raja bring some innovative ideas from Russia to steamroll telecom revolution in India?
  21. New Launch: LG 6160 OMH

If you're talking about Guru Muzik B519, then it's not OMH handset. It's prgrammed to work only in Virgin/TATA/Reliance data n/w, hence it will not work in MTS data n/w.
  22. The argument from DoT is "As per license agreement, it's duty of the applicants to ensure they're meeting eligibility criteria before filing applications and it's not possible for DoT to verify correctness of each data quoted in the application at that stage" It's similar to job application. It's responsibility of the employee to fill in correct details. Employment can be terminated even at later stage if empolyer comes to know about the misinformation in the filed application.
  23. Raja In Russia

India, Russia moot setting up JV to produce telcom hardware source :: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/infotech/hardware/India-Russia-moot-setting-up-JV-to-produce-telcom-hardware/articleshow/6741786.cms Very heartening to note that historical trust-worthy friends(read as India & Russia) are expanding co-operation in the field of telecommunication. Emergency Response Centre(ERC) is very critical for India after reading the speculative news that failure of INSAT-4B is linked to virus orginated from China. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/China-hitting-India-via-Net-worm/articleshow/6725747.cms As indicated, I feel Chidambaram(Home Minister) will travel to Russia on the subject(ERC) prior to Russian President's visit to India in December.
  24. Exactly, Etisalat(earlier SWAN telecom) got these 2 circle licences by buying Allianz Infratech. Hence, Etisalat faces termination only in MP & Bihar circles. Other circles which it got by buying SWAN will remain intact.
