  1. 3G drama rolls on... Stalemate on 3G spectrum continues; FM meets Raja, Antony source :: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/telecom/Stalemate-on-3G-spectrum-continues-FM-meets-Raja-Antony/articleshow/5239905.cms I'm little bit disappointed on the happenings. Why Raja, Pranab Mukerjee and Sam Pitroda didn't participate in the pre-bid conference although all of them were in Delhi? Atleast they should have participated in Q&A session. Don't they feel the importance of this activity in relation to their ministries? Do they think that they are too superior to face representatives of the industry? If you're so reluctant to hear advice from the stakeholders concerned, how can you advice your secretaries?
  2. Press Trust of India New Delhi, November 16, 2009 - 15:07 IST Reliance Communications today launched a new VAS branded, mVDO promising to offer its subscribers a rich experience while watching, sharing, searching and uploading videos over the WAP medium. The search options allows users to search videos from various categories while download feature presents video in an optimized form by converting them at the backend enabling users to receive the videos in 3GP format which the most popular format for viewing videos on mobile handsets. The Upload feature of the services allows to upload videos from mobile phones which in turn will lead to a video link of the uploaded video to be shared with the user via the SMS channel allowing the user to access the video at a later time. The Share feature to be introduced soon will allow the link to be shared with other users. Mr Krishna Durba, Head – VAS, Reliance Communications said, “The number of video enabled phones today far exceeds Internet Users (who have access to videos on the net through sites like YouTube etc.). Users today are extremely mobile and like having access to information and entertainment on-the-go. A platform like mVDO enables downloads, uploads and impromptu sharing – which is the need of customers today” Mr. Rajiv Hiranandani, Co-founder & Executive director, Altruist – Mobile2Win said, “UGC content is at the heart of social networking communities and our Video UGC product is well suited to cater to the needs of the urban and rural Indian consumer who is eager to share his/her experiences with like minded people. We feel that here will be a huge uptake in rural India given that this product will be accessible to all Mobile consumers who own mobile phones and not only restricted to those 35 million who have Mobile Internet on their handsets.” The service is available over various subscription options varying from a week to month with price generally at Re.1 per day
  3. Worldmode Iphone On The Wings

Verizon iPhone Blockbuster Coming Summer 2010 source :: http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97725 This is bit of a sad news that qualcomm cannot provide chips in time for worldmode Iphone in 2010. If the article to be believed, In 2010, we can only see Iphones which work either in EvDO or HSDPA but not both.
  4. More loose ends than closed ones at the end of pre-bid conference. Operators maul DoT for clarity. India’s 3G Auction: “You’re Dealing The Cards On 8th, But We Can’t Play Blind” source :: http://www.medianama.com/2009/11/223-indias-3g-auction-youre-dealing-the-cards-on-8th-but-we-cant-play-blind/ TRAI is preparing 2 key recommendations at this point of time which will have greater implication on 3G auction. 1) Future spectrum policy 2) M&A guidelines on UASL players Even the above 2 recommendations are interlinked to each other. DoT should wait till both those recommendations are released by TRAI and implemented by DoT. This way DoT can avoid chain of litigations after the 3G auction. Its better that DoT releases "mock auction software game" to operators 15 days prior to auction so that operators can get acquainted with the auction rules by playing the game on their own.

  7. The responses have been received from stakeholders on future spectrum policy. Click "Responses received for the Consultation Paper on Overall Spectrum Management and review of license terms and conditions dated 16th October 2009" in the below link http://www.trai.gov.in/ConsultationPapers_list_year.asp The following should be the key points which TRAI should keep in mind while formulating the final policy. 1) Technology Neutrality. same amount of spectrum should be at same price irrespective of technology same amount spectrum should be given at each incremental step irrespective of technology 2) Level playing field ground rules should not favour one section of players(like incumbents vs new players) 3) Fostering efficient use of spectrum 4) Provision to get back hoarded spectrum 5) Allowing spectrum trading 6) Increasing competition by supporting new players to settle in smoothly

  11. Push TRAI amendment Bill: FM to Raja The bill allows * non-government telecom expert to become member of TRAI * a person who has retired from Govt. services to become member of TRAI source :: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Push-TRAI-amendment-Bill--FM-to-Raja/540642/ Above all these, I expect a provision in the bill which forces the DoT/DoIB to accept/reject(with substantial reasons) TRAI's recommendations within specified time-frame. TRAI's recommendations on interconnecting VoIP with traditional Mobile&Fixed Telephony is pending in DoT's table without any reasons stated for an unacceptable period of time. :confuse:

  17. Trai Must Act

Airtel is already seeing fire in its backyard. It has lot of flap in its belly. Its time that it starts trimming itself to survive. The articulation that "lowering termination will not lower tariff" is just foolish. Whenever TRAI reduced termination or ADC, the industry had witnessed tariff reduction. Another articulation saying that "its too early to reduce the termination again" is anti-regulatory. TRAI has its own competence to know when to intervene and certainly not necessary to get advice from anti-competitive organization like Airtel. I've seen recently several articulations from Cartel (Airtel,Vodafone and Idea) indicating businesses of new players will collapse. These articulations are irritant in the industry and aimed at scaring new players. If they believe that they can drive-away competition by rhetoric, they are in for rude shock. source :: http://www.india-server.com/news/telecom-rates-to-consolidate-in-medium-15561.html
