Tatas seek priority in spectrum queue. source :: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Tatas_s...how/2554431.cms

The key points put forward by the GSM players during the current deliberation are 1) Technology has not improved in last few years 2) No other country follows these strict spectrum criteria 3) No need to push in more operators since already competition is stiff The point 1 is absolute lie and doesn't deserve any further discussion in this forum. I feel all the engineers/technologists who have worked tirelessly for the telecom sector in the last 2 years would commit suicide on hearing this. I never expected such kind of statements from business stalwarts like Arun Sarin and Sunil Mittal which demeans the effort and sincerity of technologists. The point 2 needs discussion. India is a densely populated and the spectrum crunch faced in India is unprecedented in comparison with rest of the world. Bracketing India with other developed countries is grossly misleading given its sheer size and population. Why our operators are unwilling to project India as pioneer in spectrum efficient implementation of telecom technologies? Why are we always looking at other countries to follow? Why can't we lead? What our GSM operators doing with the corpus which they’ve gained during pre-CDMA period (before entry of Reliance and TATA)? (Hope everybody gets reminded of the cost of calls during that period) Let India be a test bed and its success be replicated in other developing countries. The point 3 also needs closer look. Competition in any field is relative. What is considered as competition today may look like an Oligopoly when we look back after 3 years. The Endeavour of Regulator and Govt. Department is to bring more smiles in the faces of million citizens who are still untouched by the warmth of technologies. With the current call rates you just cannot convince them. Telecom is after all a very basic infrastructure and it needs utmost competition. This could only be achieved by pushing as much as possible operators into the field with the available spectrum.

Opera Mini On Tata's Brew Handsets
kesav replied to nilesh_ku's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Nokia 6275 is a java based handset. Till now, opera was available only for java-based phones and not for BREW-based models like LG 6000, LG 6600 etc Hence, it is for the first time that opera would work on a BREW phone with Tata. Not completely correct. In reliance mobile internet is supported only on WAP enabled phones and not on Java phones. Non-WAP Java phone users(like LG6130) have to be content with hopeless jataayu browser. In Brew phones mobile internet is completely unavailable. -

I agree with Anil Ambani regarding the spectrum. The crucial points to be considered wrt spectrum are 1) National and scarce Resource 2) TEC is a technical arm of DoT and has to be respected of its capability 3) New and incumbent players have to be treated on par (to avoid future litigations and providing level playing field) 4) Spectrum recovered from incumbent will help in injecting more new players(hence, more competition <-> more customer satisfaction) 5) It'll push the technologies to their limits which inturn help in slotting more subscribers in the given bandwidth 6) It'll provide fresh fire in the incumbents' belly to increase their subscribers inorder not to surrender their excess spectrum(increases teledensity) The ongoing commitee should only concentrate on the timeline which has to be framed for the return of the excess spectrum. It should concentrate on the modalities of returing excess spectrum within framed timeline. There can be smaller changes in the criteria proposed by TEC if some technologists(neutral from IIT/IISc) in the committee really feel the pinch in implementation. Changes to subscriber criteria proposed by TEC should not happen due to industrialists but only by intellectuals(read technologists).

Yes...........Its a promotional offer. see the attached pic. -
@anuragz The intention is not to hurt you but to make aware of simple procedure followed in forums( reading before replying...). If you feel that you've not made mistake so be it. I don't have any objection to it as long as you're not guiding co-remwebians in a wrong direction. As far as my experience goes "Can't read the posts above before posting new query?" is a very mild statement like friendly pat. If your brain interprets someother meaning I'm sorry for that meaning(which I frankly don't know).

Opera Mini On Tata's Brew Handsets
kesav replied to nilesh_ku's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Its just fantastic move to bring in Opera Mini through Brew...... Its open challenge to Reliance's garden wall approach of stripping the mobile browsers in all the handsets sold by them. Does Reliance have guts to maintain net neutrality like TATA? -
Can't read the posts above before posting new query? I've clearly mentioned that there're separate manuals for TATA and Relinace which means its available for both TATA and Reliance. TATA MAX and Reliance MAX have different menus for TATA zone and Reliance World respectively. (the above info is clearly inferred if you read through manuals of both) May be Reliance MAX and TATA MAX phones cannot be interchanged. This point can only be confirmed by the user of the phone.

Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
kesav replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
ITU World Radiocommunication Conference concludes after four weeks. International treaty sets future course for wireless. source :: http://www.itu.int/newsroom/press_releases/2007/36.html The key release which is specific to 3G spectrum is allocation of 450 MHz globally as IMT frequency band. So in effect DoT is now forced to auction 450 MHz for 3G on the same date when 2.1 GHz, 2.5 GHz and possibly 1.9 GHz is auctioned. 450MHz is very and very important spectrum due its small capex required to establish completely new operation. It would certainly help green field operators of 3G. Now DoT should not hide its head under the sand like ostrich. It has to clearly explain to parliament and to public why it cann't auction all the bands of IMT spectrum parallely. -
It supports WAP browser. source :: http://www.mobileisgood.com/phone_spec.php?phone_id=1622 The 2 important cons are 1) Non EvDO phone 2) Document viewer(can read .pdf , .xls, .txt, .doc etc.,) is missing Note:: Document viewer is available in samsung FLO and samsung DUO

DoT's committee decided to invite the stakeholders and experts in this field to give their views before the committee on 26th & 30th November 2007. source :: http://www.dotindia.com/as/Press_Release_d...for_website.pdf GSM players may get DoT reprieve - Move part of multi-pronged formula to end telecom row Business Standard / New Delhi November 19, 2007 The department and five operators will meet on Wednesday to discuss a multi-step formula. The department of telecommunications (DoT) and the five large operators of GSM-technology mobile services that are scheduled to meet on Wednesday are expected to discuss a multi-step formula that will give priority to incumbents in spectrum allocation and lower the qualifying criterion for additional spectrum. DoT's offer will be made on condition that GSM operators end all litigation filed at the telecom tribunal. DoT is also expected to emphasise that it will press ahead and introduce more competition in the sector. These options are being considered as the basis for a settlement on the impasse over telecom licensing and allocation of spectrum, radio frequencies that enable mobile communications. Under the formula, which has the support of key interlocutors in the sector, incumbent operators could be granted additional spectrum in their current service areas and for the new ones for which they have sought licences. Holders of letters of intent like Maxis Aircel would come second, followed by CDMA-technology service operator Reliance Communications, which has applied for spectrum to launch GSM-technology services under its current licence. New applicants would be considered for licences and spectrum, depending on their place in the queue, only after this. Key to this formula is the suggestion that the minimum subscriber criterion for existing service providers to qualify for additional spectrum may either be lowered or operators granted spectrum on a temporary basis till they optimise their networks. The qualifying criterion was first raised by the telecom regulator and then increased still further by DoT’s standards-setting organisation the Telecom Engineering Centre. Communications ministry sources added that with DoT de-linking spectrum allocation from the new licences, all applicants will be granted licences but will be allotted spectrum based on their eligibility. DoT will also grant incumbent operators more spectrum based on eligibility norms that are being reviewed by a committee comprising government officials and private sector representatives. The operators are working on a strategy that could include demands to make the new subscriber norms applicable prospectively and not retrospectively. They may also demand that excess spectrum with incumbents not be withdrawn and spectrum charges be lowered. Those invited to the meeting by DoT Secretary are Bharti's Sunil Mittal, Reliance Communications' Anil Ambani, Idea's Kumar Mangalam Birla, Spice Telecom's B K Modi and Vodafone India Chief Executive Asim Ghosh.
