KumaarShah replied to HetalDP's topic in General Technical Discussion
@hp, page not found error in the above link. please check. @jmthakur and all others who may have display properties problems, I too faced the same problem as you have faced and it was sorted out by resetting the display properties in Windows. You can see the earlier pages in this post when this SW was introduced. There are many screenshots also. you can check these and adjust your display properties and see the results. In particular please see page 2 posts 21 to 30 and page 3, post 31 to 32 and you will get all your answers. Thanks. -
Welcome back, Gyani after a long long time.
-
Aircel was the first one off the block in Chennai. They have introduced it here almost 4 - 5 months back. But yes, they did it alongwith Caller Tunes. So they were late for Caller Tunes. Now Airtel has copied them.

^^ AFAIK, in the new series of Nokia 2865, 6265, 6275 etc, the phone lock feature has been disabled by Nokia and maybe RCL. It is not available atleast on my 6265. I complained to Nokia CC and also sent an email to which they replied that they will look into the matter and revert to me. It is almost 9 months now and no reply from them. I have given up on them.
-
Arey bhai, HP ki marji, whats yr problem with 4 or 40 extra smileys??? Maybe for RCL it may take 13 months and not 9 months for you know what. Ha ha ha
-
That was a very witty answer, HP.

RCL does not prevent anyone from using STVs to reduce the call charges. Following RCL's footsteps for a change, the pug also has announced some STVs in Chennai but all at steep prices. So also has Aircel and Airtel. The base rates may be higher but the usage of STVs will lower your call charges drastically.

Reliance Communications Files Complaint Against Nokia
KumaarShah posted a topic in Reliance Communications
Press Trust of India - Monday, May 28, 2007 09:20:48 PM NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against mobile handset maker Nokia on a complaint filed by Anil Ambani company Reliance Communications alleging that handsets meant for its subscribers were being used by rival firm Tata Teleservices as well. The FIR was registered by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police following a complaint by RCOM. When contacted, a Reliance official confirmed it has lodged a complaint against Nokia for allegedly diverting handsets meant for the company to Tata Teleservices. In its complaint, RCOM has claimed the handsets were hacked and modified to make it compliant with Tata's network. RCoM had entered into an agreement with Nokia in August 2006 for sale of handsets at a special price if activated on Reliance network. Under the agreement, Nokia was to channel the handsets through its distributor Brightpoint across the country till end of May 2007. On sale of every Nokia handset along with RCOM services, Brightpoint was to raise an invoice to RCOM for the differential amount to be reimbursed by RCOM to Brightpoint. The co-branded handsets were programmed with RCOM Logo and applications along with a network lock enabling them to work only on its CDMA network. "In month of February 2006, it was discovered the number of handsets for which Brightpoint had raised invoices to RCOM was not matching with the number of Nokia handsets activated," the RCOM official said. When contacted, a Nokia India spokesperson told PTI: "Currently we have no formal notice regarding the matter. We will find out details and work with Reliance to resolve it". Ha Ha Ha, now RCL is having even serious problems with Nokia as well. First it was with Qualcomm, then samsung, then LG and now Nokia. Where it will end is anybody's guess. I think we can only look forward to sub-standard Classic handsets in the future from RCL. All other leading makers are having problems with RCL. What will happen to existing power users who may want to change their handsets either because of repairs or fancy? They will have to buy only Classic. Existing power users will get even more fed up with RCL and move onto GSM where there is no such problem. And for RCL, GSM seems to be a distant dream only. Bad times are ahead for RCL. -
Reliance Communications Files Complaint Against Nokia

Off Topic: Qualcomm row may hurt Nokia INDIATIMES NEWS NETWORK & AGENCIES[ TUESDAY, MAY 29, 2007 01:39:05 PM] SEOUL: Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, has said the ongoing patents battle with CDMA champion Qualcomm could work against the uptake of "third-generation" mobile technology globally. Nokia is putting its focus for 3G mobile phones on higher-end models despite moves by smaller rivals like LG to lower the device costs for the high-speed wireless service, the company's Chief Technology Officer Tero Ojanpera said here at a conference. Nokia is mired in a bitter legal dispute over patents with the US mobile phone chip maker Qualcomm after part of a major cross-licensing agreement expired last month. The legal dispute centres on Nokia's use of Qualcomm patents for 3G, but it also has a bearing on Qualcomm's chip business, which according to Nokia uses many Nokia-patented technologies. "We are in negotiations but there's no agreement," Ojanpera said at a news conference at the Seoul Digital Forum event. Nokia last week filed its first patent counter-suit against Qualcomm, seeking damages and an injunction against Qualcomm chips. Analysts estimate Nokia has paid Qualcomm around $500 million per year and now aims to get a better deal. "This whole discussion might have an impact on 3G technology," he said, adding that alternative technologies such as mobile WiMax were gaining momentum due to uncertainties surrounding the licences. The patents in question cover CDMA and GSM technologies, some of which Nokia has licensed in the past. Nokia is claiming in the countersuit that some of the technology in Qualcomms portfolio actually belongs to Nokia. However, according to analysts, there's more at stake than writing large patent-licensing checks. In addition to the lawsuit, Qualcomm filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission in July last year accusing Nokia of selling cell phones and other devices that infringe on its patents. Qualcomm says this amounts to unfair trade practices on the part of Nokia and is asking the USITC to bar the import and sale of all infringing Nokia products. This means that if Qualcomm prevails in the dispute, Nokia phones may actually disappear from the US stores. -
Which Handsets Will Work On Both Reliance & Tata?
KumaarShah replied to anuragz's topic in The Lounge
It appears that Nokia has slyly sold off handsets which were supposed to work on RCL by hacking the SW etc and enabling the handsets to work on Tata SIM also. So check in the market, you may get some Nokia model which works on both RCL and TATA. Enjoy while the going is good. Very soon, RCL will sell only Classic handsets which even a beggar on the road will not buy because of its very cheap and poor quality. -
Times New Network, May 29, 2007 02:17:45 AM MUMBAI: US private equity giant Carlyle and American Towers have formed a partnership to buy and own cellphone tower assets in the country, a person familiar with the situation said. The duo may also bid for buying a minority stake in the tower business being spun off by Reliance Communications, the country's second-largest wireless service provider. Carlyle, which last week announced plans to become mortgage giant HDFC's second-biggest shareholder, and American Towers are keen to take advantage of opportunities in the booming telecom business in India. The two firms want to own a telecom tower business in the country. American Towers will own a majority stake, with Carlyle holding a minority stake. A Reliance Communications spokesperson declined to comment. Carlyle officials were not available for comment. India's telecom industry has been a success story ever since companies started slashing tariffs, embarked on a massive marketing campaign. Cellphone companies such as Nokia and Samsung helped the cause by dropping prices of phones. Reliance Communications announced some time ago its decision to spin off its tower business into a 100% subsidiary. This is just a prelude to offloading a 10-15% stake in the company to a strategic or a financial investor. JP Morgan is the advisor to Reliance Communications. The preliminary bids from interested investors is expected by June 7 and the winner is expected to be announced by June 30. The value of the tower business of Reliance Communications is estimated at about $4 billion. The company owns a country-wide network of towers for its CDMA and GSM business and is planning a big expansion. Owning the physical infrastructure on its books is not a big necessity and the towers can always be shared by different companies. The towers are also the same for both CDMA and GSM business except for the electronics.

The TATA plans are useful only and only if you call one Tata number. Otherwise it will be costly. IMHO, it is not useful for all, maybe for some people it may prove useful.

Pay mobile bills by reading SMS! Press Trust of India - Tuesday, May 22, 2007 11:30:39 AM Chennai: SMS advertisements, which used to irritate cellphone users, could soon turn out to be money- spinners with a Bangalore-based firm claiming to pay those who willingly receive the messages. mGinger.com, started by three engineers, works on the principle of "permission-based marketing". "People can make anywhere between Rs 300 to Rs 1,600 per month through this," Chaitanya Nallan, its CEO, told PTI. "When users get paid by us, whether it is Rs 300 or Rs 500, it can atleast cover their mobile phone bills," he added. Chaitanya, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, who graduated from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad last month, said the idea originated from Veerendra Shivhare, the Chief Operations Officer of the firm. The third member of the team is the chief technical officer of the firm, Anil, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur. "People generally get SMS carpet-bombed. Advertisers get mobile phone numbers illegally and bombard them with unwanted ads without permission. Veerendra was so fed up with such messages. We hit upon this idea of targeted advertising with users' permission, for which they get paid," Chaitanya said. He said people could log on to mGinger.com and register themselves along with their mobile phone numbers and the ads they want to receive. They can choose any number of ads and these will be sent at the time they want, he said. "For each ad received, the mobile phone user gets paid 20 paise. They can refer their friends and relatives for which they get 10 paise per referral and 5 paise for every ad their friends referrals receive," he added. Another of those endless gimmicks, will it work properly? What if you read for a month and do not get the money? Admins, Please move this post to general chat. Unable to move it myself or even delete the post altogether. Earlier the delete button used to be available, where has it gone now?

^^^ Thanks amtrag.

sorry for the ignorance, how to get a blank ringtone?
-
^^^ Yes that is possible. Thanks for pointing it out.
-
Me too, if anyone can provide the crack. Thanks
-
@chirag, It looks superb. how come the left picture does not have an antenna and the right one has an antenna. Or are these 2 different models? They look same to me. Will it work with our great RCL and even greater GSM operators? I very much doubt it. Moreover the CDMA seems to EVDO which is currently not available in INDIA. Why does RCL not tie up with Samsung. They seem to have some excellent high end models. AFAIK, even LG has some great models in the EVDO segment. If and if, RCL does get to offer 3G, will they once again tie up wth LG/Samsung or not? Can you post some links? We can see the entire specs that way. Thanks.

@aks, that is not what jatin is asking. See if you can provide some solution to jatin and me as I have a similar problem. In any case, Nokia seems to have some other algorithm in the call barring -i/c and o/g unlike LG which is very very user friendly. In Nokia the logic is something only a techie can understand, it is not at all user friendly. Thanks
-
But even with a RUIM enabled handset, the promo balance will go away if you change the handset, if I am not wrong. AFAIK, The promo balance is loaded onto the handset and not to the RUIM.
-
^^^ If you have any promotional balance in your account, you will lose all that. If the promo balance is insignificant, then go ahead and change handsets. If you want the promo balance also, then you cannot change handsets unless of course you are willing to let it go. You have to decide which you want - new handset or promo balance. Mind you, the old balance and validity will remain unaffected by this change of handsets.

I agree with raccoon on all the above. Only thing RCL has improved on now is that CC/HL is having upto date info. How long this will last is anybody's guess. Their website also gets updated atleast frequently now unlike before when it used to dole out stale info only. Hope they become market leaders again instead of followers of Airtel, Hutch, Idea, BSNL/MTNL etc. in terms of newer plans and tariffs. They definitely need to junk out so many plans on their website, which I hope no one would be taking. Some of them are really silly plans. This then will be the real discovery and not the current discovery which is only a wild goose chase. They also need to re-work DAPO plans. The 400 free minutes are useless if you opt for the Rs 99 STD pack. You lose the benefit of calling at Re 0.40 pm to any Reliance Mobile across India. You will have to use the 400 free minutes for making local offnet calls only, which in any case are exorbitant at Rs 1.20 pm to other cells and Re 1 to other LLs.

^^^ Points well taken now. Matter closed. Thanks and yes it was enjoyable.
