RCL-led group leads the race for HEL RASHMI PRATAP & JOJI THOMAS PHILIP TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2006 12:45:51 AM] MUMBAI/NEW DELHI:: A Consortium led by Reliance Communications (Rel Comm) is believed to have emerged as the front-runner for buying out Hutchison Essar (HEL) at an estimated value of $13-14 billion. The consortium also includes private equity giants Blackstone and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), sources close to the development told ET. “The deal is likely to be sealed in the next few days,” said sources. There is also a third front emerging, with Malaysia’s Maxis, Hutchison’s JV partner Essar and Egyptian telecom giant Orascom in the fray. Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, vice-chairman of Reliance Capital, is in Hong Kong and is believed to have held discussions with Hutchison officials. Asim Ghosh, managing director, Hutchison Essar, said he would not comment on speculation. The Essar group is also interested in buying Hutch’s stake and has been scouting for partners. JM Morgan Stanley is advising the group on its options. The group is also talking to Citibank for raising the necessary funds. Maxis, Malaysia’s telecom company, is being advised by Standard Chartered. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel on Friday said that it would not make the first move for buying out stake in Hutch Essar. Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar in the Capital on Thursday, Bharti CMD Sunil Mittal had said the company would consider getting involved only if either the Ruias or Hutch approached them. At present, neither party has done so. A Bharti source added it would be interested in any deal where it saw synergies. Anil Ambani has been looking at aggressive expansion in GSM, the technology used by 70% of India’s mobile population. Hutch will give CDMA major Rel Comm a ready GSM presence in 16 circles with a robust customer base of over 22 million, most of whom are high-end users and corporate customers. Interestingly, Rel Comm’s GSM arm, Reliance Telecom, offers services in eight circles, of which it overlaps with HEL in only one circle - West Bengal. HEL is not present in Madhya Pradesh, North-East, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir. Reliance Telecom is offering services in all these circles except in Jammu & Kashmir. Clearly, HEL fits well in Rel Comm’s GSM gameplan. After the joint bid by Malaysia’s Maxis and Texas Pacific Group was rejected by Hutchison Whampoa, the Malaysian telco has submitted a new bid. This time, it has gone alone and is open to exiting Aircel Cellular, where it owns 74%, if it gets HEL. Maxis officials were in talks with Canning Fok this week. “The new bid has been submitted. It will be considered at meetings in Hong Kong spread over Monday and Tuesday. A clearer picture is likely to emerge by Tuesday evening,” a source close to the development told ET. Sources said Maxis was not averse to selling its stake in Aircel to avoid any regulatory hurdles. Maxis bought Aircel in a deal valued at $1.08 billion last year. Its total investment in Aircel is still under $1.5 billion. “Maxis wouldn’t mind incurring a small loss if it gets a bigger and larger player like HEL,” sources said. Maxis officials, however, refused to comment. Aircel, which has over 4 million subscribers and offers services in nine circles, has applied for licences for the other 14 circles. It has also paid $300 million as entry fee to the Department of Telecom. Hutchison’s JV partners, the Ruias of the Essar Group, will also submit their bid for buying the country’s third largest GSM operator, Hutchison Essar, next week. According to sources, Essar is in talks with Qatar’s Q-Tel to sell 10% of its 33% stake in HEL and bring in a strategic investor. The group is also raising resources to bid for Hutchison’s 67% stake in HEL. For the Ruias, HEL is a strategic fit in its telecom ambition, spanning telecom towers and telecom retail businesses. The group has raised its stake in HEL from 20% to the current 33%. It clearly will not let go the goose that lays golden egg. Also, the group is planning an overseas listing of its businesses under a holding company, Essar Overseas, and a strong presence in telecom will improve its brand and visibility. In response to an e-mail, an Essar spokesperson said, “As a policy, we would not like to comment on market rumours and speculative issues.” Last year, the Egyptian telco bought 19% stake in Hutchison Telecommunications International (HTIL), the emerging markets unit of Hutchison Whampoa and Essar’s JV partner. There is also a buzz that Orascom is looking at a possible bid. However, this could not be confirmed. Orascom’s CEO, N Sawiris is currently in the country as part of a delegation led by Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Mr Gheit and Mr Sawiris are scheduled to meet Union external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee at 11 am on Saturday. The secutity implications of Orascom’s involvement in India are likely to come up for discussion. Link: - RCL led group leads race for HEL

Go to WW, or try *366. It may work. And yes, Rs 25 per month is the correct charges.

good answer, linuxguy. Even I am suspicious of Reliance people. You never know when they will change tactics.

If you are on DAPO, wap access is full free. Dont know abt rt, wp, songs d/ls. If ne1 is not on DAPO, then I suggest to take up the Membership Plan before 20.12.2006 at a monthly rental of Rs 25 and continue enjoying full free wap access. On and after 20.12.2006, WAP access will be chargeable at 10ps per 10kb for those who are not on "M" plan. Enjoyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
-
Yes the above is the right way to add mp3 ringtones.
-
You are posting the same message in many threads. Anyway, please cut the name of your mp3 file to max. 30 characters and you will see your files. Enjoyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Depends on whether you are on DAPO or not. If you are on DAPO, wap browsing is full free. If you are not on DAPO, then enrol yourself on Membership Plan before 20.12.2006 and enjoy full free wap browsing, otherwise you will be charged 10ps per 10kb. A separate thread on this issue is going on, search for it. Thanks

@linuxguy, you can relax that Hutch will not go to Reliance.... See the following: - Reliance Comm, Maxis in race for Hutch stake Our Bureau Hutch may give up claim on BPL's Mumbai circle New Delhi , Dec. 15 Malaysian telecom major Maxis and Reliance Communications have confirmed that they are interested in picking up a stake in Hutchison Essar. This comes even as industry sources said that Hutch was ready to give up its claim for BPL's Mumbai circle, an issue, which has lead to souring of relationship between Hutchison and Essar. While most of the circles acquired from BPL has been merged with Hutch, only the Mumbai operations have been kept by Essar because Hutch could not get necessary clearance from the Government. Meanwhile, according to sources close to the development, Essar is also locking up funds if there is an opportunity to buy Hutchison's stake in the joint venture. Officials of both Hutch and Essar denied that there was any move to dilute equity in the joint venture company. Mr Asim Ghosh, Managing Director of Hutchison India said on Thursday that reports of equity sale were speculative. He had also said that the price being quoted for Hutch was too low. In case Hutch decides to sell its equity then Essar will have the first right of refusal, which will make it possible for the Ruias-promoted company to take controlling stake in Hutchison Essar. Riuas-promoted Essar owns 33 per cent stake in the mobile company. Reliance's aim On the other hand, Reliance Communication is understood to be putting together a corpus of $14 billion for acquiring the stake. However, Reliance's bid may hit a stumbling block with the Government rules, which does not permit common promoters in two different telecom companies in the same circle. Industry sources said that Reliance might, therefore, pick up a stake in Hutchison Telecom International, giving it an indirect equity in Essar Hutchison. Link Courtesy: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2006/1...21606560100.htm I am not sure if anyone has posted the above here or elsewhere. In case it has been done, mods may please remove this. Thanks

Hp-sms Server - 4.0.0.1 ( Sms Software )
KumaarShah replied to HetalDP's topic in General Technical Discussion
@hpnasik, While googling on concatenated sms, i found the following link. It may be of use to you. I am not a techie to comment on this, so please go through it if it helps. Link: - http://www.developershome.com/sms/ Thanks.. -
Hoorrraaaaayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!! But will Reliance introduce it? If yes, this is a pretty cool candy bar phone with all the features of Nokia 6265 plus GPS. Whether this feature will be available with Reliance is a matter of concern.... One more feature promised by 6275i is concatenated SMS. I wiki'd the term and found the following result: In the cellular industry, mobile phones and their networks sometimes support "concatenated sms" to overcome the limiting number of characters in a text message (usually 160). Using this method, longer messages are split up by the sending device and recombined at the receiving end. Each message is then billed separately. When the feature works properly, it is nearly transparent to the user. However, due to incompatibilities between providers and lack of support in some phone models, there does not appear to be widespread use. So does this mean this handset supports LMS? like the one LG has in all their new handsets? Let us hope so. Thanks...

Good news friends, I have received the reply from Reliance as follows: - Dear Customer, In response to your mail regarding charges for WAP application, please note that as the same is available under R Surf option, which comes under membership plan in your Reliance Mobile World facility you will not be charged anything for accessing the same. We would also like to inform you that from December 20, 2006, customers who had not subscribed for membership plan will be charged for the network usage @ 10paise per 10KB applicable on Reliance Mobile World usage. Yours sincerely, Prasun Banerjee Corporate Centre Reliance Communications So the WAP is still free if you subscribe to M Plan. After 20.12.06, it will be charged at 10ps per 10kb as stated very clearly in the email above. SO rejoice till they decide otherwise. Cheers. Enjoooooooooooooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Bharti Races ahead in numbers; Reliance Comm, PSUs lag
KumaarShah replied to KumaarShah's topic in Reliance Communications
I agree that the growth has been lost because of the non availability of good handsets, and inflexibility to change operators. But the drop cannot be solely due to these reasons. It is also due to the increasing tendency of Reliance to remove all freebies and sops (in form of R2R, etc) charging roaming rentals, etc etc. If people have to pay similar charges on Reliance, they can as well go with GSM. Thats why, the growth is retarded. -
Delhi HC extends stay on award of contract by BSNL Add to Clippings PTI[ THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2006 01:30:00 PM] NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday extended the stay on award of contract by BSNL for rolling out 45 million lines for GSM network till January 15, when the matter would be taken up for final hearing. A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Hima Kohli granted time to the parties after they sought adjournment. Motorola has challenged BSNL's decision to disqualify it from the bidding process on technical parameters. Earlier, BSNL, which plans to expand its GSM network by 45 million lines had disqualified Motorola from the bidding process on technical parameters. Link Courtesy: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/810992.cms Now BSNL will be unable to give new connections from January 2007. See the foll. article also. Delay in GSM contract to cost BSNL Rs 300 crore Add to Clippings RASHMI PRATAP TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2006 12:53:22 AM] MUMBAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) will lose around Rs 300 crore in revenue due to the delay in the awarding of its mega contract for 45.5 million GSM lines. The telco is close to exhausting its current capacity of nearly 24 million GSM lines and will have a tough time accommodating cellular subscribers beginning January this year as its user base has already reached 23 million now. “In most of the circles, we are close to finishing up the existing capacity. Beginning February, cellular growth is likely to come to a standstill because we don’t have the required infrastructure,” a senior BSNL official told ET. Motorola has approached the Delhi High court, challenging BSNL’s decision to shortlist Ericsson and Nokia as the winners of what is termed as one of the world’s biggest GSM equipment orders. The matter has been stayed by the court till December 14. Even if the court gives the go-ahead in December, the new lines will not be installed before June. “Equipment vendors will need at least five to six months to supply the first batch of lines after the order is placed,” said an official at an equipment firm. BSNL’s blended (pre-paid plus post-paid) average revenue per user per month (ARPU) is around Rs 450. The telco has been adding nearly a million users per month for the past few months now. BSNL’s subscriber churn rate is under 1% and so there’s hardly any scope for roping in new users in place of those who exit. “At this rate, BSNL will lose not less than Rs 300 crore by June. And if the litigation extends beyond December, losses will go up further,” sources said. The telecom monolith’s plans to add 20 million users annually for the next five years have gone for a toss following the dispute over this tender. “If the matter is not resolved in the next few months, BSNL will lose the race against private operators, some of whom are also adding as many subscribers per month,” said industry analysts. In the Indian GSM market, BSNL has the second largest share of 23% while market leader Bharti has over 30% with more than 30 million subscribers and is adding over a million subscribers every month. Delhi HC extends stay on award of contract by BSNL
KumaarShah replied to KumaarShah's topic in The Lounge
really speaking, it seems plausible for these private players to have done this. -
Three cheers to BSNL for beating all other ISPs in this speed race. Hope they do come in real it fast because the BSNL BABUs are very slow in other respects.

I tried some nos. in Hyderabad and I got the message that, ' please check the number you have dialled' atleast four to five times over three hours from 2PM to 5PM yesterday. I had to dial out atleast six to seven times to get through to any number in Hyderabad even "32" or "93". I dont know about "30" series. After this, on my mobile i got SMS from 1234 reg. miss call alerts. I think this is only a ploy to generate miss call SMS alerts revenue. So by hook or crook, they want to increase ARPU. Reliance Comm. is a fu**** sh** company now.

Thanks, honest and arun. I will take the test later, as i am posting from my mobile now. Thanks once again. I have just taken the test and my score is 37 with 100% accuracy. I need to improve a lot.

I use Avast AV, which is fully upto-date and it did not report any virus when I clicked on the link. Anyway, let the techies check it and report here. Thanks

Finally they found a way to charge for WAP, albeit by charging even for RWorld. So the CC/HL people told me the correct story, on 16th Aug.2006, that since Reliance was unable to split the usage for Rworld and WAP, they could not introduce billing system for WAP separately. Now, what about the rentals? will it be free? And at 10p/10kb, it is expensive (both for the eyes and the pocket) to browse on a small mobile screen. How will they calculate the usage? This may lead to a fresh round of acrimony between the user and reliance over excessive billings. I checked today with the CC/HL and as usual they do not know anything about this. They do not know what is WAP at all, leave alone charges. I have forgotten the name of the CCE who gave me the earlier correct info. Anyway, lets wait and watch what happens. Reliance is slowly pulling out all stops (or is it sops?) and trying desperately to increase the ARPU at any cost. "If old users are unhappy with the changes in charges, they can very well get out of the Reliance network", is the new mantra now. I had sent an email for exiting from the FWP services and the reply I got was the procedure for exit and the exit policy. Any other telecom company would have called up and expressed regrets /enquired as to why I wantto exit. But not Reliance. They do not want older customers because they are enjoying a lot of free goodies. If newer customers are available with no free frills, why keep old customers? Let them go, if they want, is their new policy. Thanks.

^^^ Great one, that. Ali, you made my fingers ache clicking, clicking, clicking (150 times) my mouse button. Good laugh. Thanks.

@hpnasik, anything about the slow speed at which the SMSs are being sent? Also, if we select your database, the numbers you have added in your excel sheet are also getting added and they receive some test smss. They are angry with me as my number had shown up in their mobiles. I even PM'd last week you but you have not seen the PM as yet. Thanks
