Ambani war: Cash settlement will hit RIL ------------------------------------------------------ Even as news of a possible settlement between the Ambani brothers are doing the rounds, global rating agency Standard and Poor's on Friday cautioned that any substantial cash payment made out of Reliance could impact the group's flagship company adversely. "RIL's business and financial profiles could weaken materially if the settlement involves substantial cash payments by RIL, resulting in increased financial leverage or a transfer of any of its core oil refining and petrochemical businesses," the agency said from Singapore while rating Reliance. "A potential settlement of the differences between the chairman and vice-chairman of RIL (BB+/stable), as reported by the media, is by itself not expected to have an immediate impact on the rating," it said. However, it said that if the settlement entails a carved out and transfer of the group's telecommunication business along with power and energy business to the vice chairman (Anil) as reported by the media, then it is not expected to harm RIL and even have a positive bearing on the flagship company. It said the outlook on the rating was stable, signifying that the rating on RIL was unlikely to change, with the exception of "material adverse developments" in the settlement. Standard and Poor's expects that final settlement would balance the interests of all the involved parties -- lenders and shareholders, given RIL's prominent position in India's private corporate sector and its links with domestic and international banking system and capital markets. RIL reported 30 per cent jump in revenues at $16.7 billion and 47 per cent rise in net profit at $1.7 billion in fiscal 2005 as compared to previous year's figures, reflecting its "superior" position in the refining and petrochemicals businesses. Its debt servicing ability was adequate, while its debt to capitalisation was below 40 per cent for fiscal 2005, the rating agency noted. "RIL's liquidity has improved from the previous year, with cash and liquid investments for fiscal 2005 adequately covering the debt falling due over the next one year," it said. Going forward, RIL was expected to maintain adequate liquidity, although a part of these liquid resources is likely to be deployed for the company's planned capital expenditures, S&P said. Most of us have been brought up on the perception that we should not take any medicine on an empty stomach. But doctors now caution that the food-medicine reaction could trigger sudden medical crises in certain cases. "Several foods can affect the function of modern-day medications. While some only hinder certain medications from doing their job, others can cause downright dangerous reactions and trigger a sudden medical crisis," says a new book, The Medicine Chest, by noted medical writer and physician Dr Yatish Agarwal. Here are some findings: ----------------------------- i. Tetracycline should not be taken with a glass of milk. "Some foods contain natural or added chemicals that can react with certain medicines in ways that render the latter virtually useless," says Dr Agarwal. For example, the calcium in dairy products can knock out tetracyclines and quinolones. ii. Alcohol and anti-amoebic medicines don't gel well. iii. Citric fruits and pickles do not go well with erythromycin. Acid fruit or vegetable juices can quash erythromycin and oral penicillin. iv. Liquorice (mulethi), a commonly used flavouring agent, can counteract the effect of high blood pressure medications. "But that's not the only way foods affect medicine. Just the simple presence of food in the digestive tract can also sometimes slow down, or enhance, the absorption of a drug from the stomach," says Dr Agarwal, who works at a public teaching hospital in New Delhi. Many medicines find food a hindrance to their entering the bloodstream, he says, but the presence of certain foods also speeds up the absorption of some medications. Some mantras to have food and medicine --------------------------------------------------- To avoid conflict between food and medication, Dr Agarwal gives a few simple mantras: i. Do not swallow any medication with fruit juice, carbonated beverage or caffeine drinks. ii. Use a full glass of ordinary drinking water. iii. To be on the safe side, take a complete holiday from alcohol. iv. Follow the physician's advice on when to take medication and what food or beverage to avoid. v. Read the labels on over-the-counter remedies and package inserts. Just as foods affect medication, some medicines also can adversely affect the body's nutrition. "While a few hinder absorption of certain nutrients, some interfere with the body's ability to convert nutrients into usable forms and others hasten excretion of certain nutrients," says Dr Agarwal. This nutrient depletion occurs gradually. But for those taking long-term medication, these interactions can have a certain bearing on health. Here are some of the findings: --------------------------------------- i. Aspirin causes deficiency of Vitamin C. ii. Antacids result in phosphorus deficiency. iii. Anti-cancer medication can cause folic acid deficiency. iv. Medicines for heart can cause calcium and magnesium deficiency. To avoid all these complications, eat a balanced diet. Do not make a habit of swallowing even seemingly harmless tablets like antacids or laxatives. Courtesy - rediff.com If any one has more such info please post

Nokia India Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of the world's largest telecom handset and network major Nokia Global, is planning to invest around $100-150 million in setting up a special economic zone in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The department of commerce granted an approval in principle to the project on Tuesday. When contacted, Sanjeev Sharma, MD, Nokia India, confirmed the plan to set up a sector-specific SEZ. "We have been allotted 210 acres for setting up the SEZ in Sriperumbudur. This is the same area that has been allotted to us for setting up the handset manufacturing unit. As per our request, the government has now granted us SEZ status," he said. The SEZ will be used for the manufacture and assembly of electronics, telecommunication equipment, IT hardware, development of software, research and development activities and other services in telecommunications. "At present, Nokia is in discussions with its partners worldwide to bring them to India -- to the SEZ -- to set up their manufacturing units here," he said, adding that since talks were on, it was too early to specify which suppliers and vendors would set up units in the SEZ.
