Microsoft unveils Windows for mobiles Bruce Meyerson | May 11, 2005 17:33 IST Microsoft Corp has unveiled a new version of its Windows operating system for mobile devices that adds such features as PowerPoint viewing while making it easier for gadget makers to equip phones and handheld computers with typewriter keyboards and iPod-sized hard drives. Windows Mobile 5.0, introduced by Chairman Bill Gates at the company's annual conference for mobile software developers in Las Vegas, also marks an about-face in marketing by eliminating the distinct Pocket PC and Smartphone brands of the operating system. Other feature enhancements include updates to the mobile versions of Microsoft Word and Excel that better maintain the formatting of documents created on a computer and allow charts to be created from a spreadsheet. The elimination of the five-year-old Pocket PC brand for PDAs and the separate Smartphone label puts Windows Mobile on the same page as rival mobile device platforms such as Symbian and BlackBerry. It also marks another change of course in Microsoft's long-evolving strategy to extend the dominance of its Windows computer platform to mobile devices. Those efforts began with a single platform based on Windows CE, short for consumer electronics, but then fragmented into three custom-made flavors: Pocket PC organizers, 'smart' cell phones, and then Pocket PCs equipped with phones. While the underlying software code for those platforms remain about 90 per cent identical, Microsoft has now decided to emphasize the familiar Windows name. But beyond separate brand names, the new Windows Mobile does remove certain technological distinctions that gave the phone and PDA platforms different capabilities. One of these is integrated support for Wi-Fi short-range wireless connections, now available for smart phones rather than just Pocket PCs. Another is so-called 'persistent' memory storage, which preserves basic user information, contacts and personal settings when a device's battery runs out of power. This capability was previously available for smart phones but not Pocket PCs. The updated version of Mobile Windows also serves as another example of Microsoft seeking to barge into a hot new sector where it's late to the party -- much as it responded to the Netscape Navigator Web browser with Internet Explorer and to the Palm Pilot with Pocket PC. This time, by adding support for internal hard drives, Microsoft is enabling device makers to design phones and organizers with enough storage capacity to compete in the portable music player market dominated by the iPod from Apple Computer Inc. Windows Mobile accounts for a tiny fraction of Microsoft's business. Combined, software revenue from mobile and embedded devices, such as auto dash systems, and totaled $80 million in the first three months of 2005. That was up 31 per cent from a year earlier, but amounted to less than a tenth of Microsoft's overall revenue for the quarter. Courtesy - rediff.com

Mobile Blogging Makes an Entry Midas Events, a Below The Line communications agency, has launched 'Mobylog - mobylogger's lounge'; calling it the country's first full photo blogging solution that offers a way to enjoy online experience. Through Mobylog, a camera phone user can be a part of the online photo journal phenomenon without downloading any additional software or going through a registration process. Users are required to click a photo, tag a message/comment through MMS and then send it to their personal mobylog page, enabling instant viewing and sharing online. Mobile blogging offers camera phone users the opportunity to instantly transfer their pictures to their own personal presence on the Net. Deepak Pawar, Managing Director - Midas Events, said, "We are upbeat about Mobile blogging as the concept has tremendous potential and the unique ability of the use to tailor the application to suit ones needs." The technology, according to Midas is fast gaining popularity as a media that offers several possibilities to brands to communicate key experiences to its target audience. At Mobylog efforts to sustain & grow the user base are being carried out by promoting the addictive nature of the service & encouraging users to frequently stay connected through pictures. The campaign innocuously asks "Aaj Photu Dala Kya?" subtly reminding the user to post on the site. Mobylog's administration interface lets one report on any event or any time period and one can also track any user. According to Midas the site's architecture supports almost all GSM networks and the full range of multimedia standards and handset capabilities. It incorporates a range of mobylogging features such as commenting, bookmarking, favorites, messaging etc. Pawar maintained that while many such services exist across the world, this is the first fully Indian service and first from India. "With our core competencies spread over brand communications and brand identity management services, converging the spectrum of mediums through creative use of technology, mobylog is the next step in providing interpersonal communication solutions to the constantly mobile," said Pawar. Midas Events has set up the entire backroom operations towards maintenance and sustenance of the site. The agency is headquartered in Mumbai with operational offices in all metros and cities across the country. Courtesy - www.techtree.com

Policy gives Reliance 3G edge Joji Thomas Philip & Surajeet Das Gupta in New Delhi | May 11, 2005 09:12 IST The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's draft spectrum policy has proposed that the country's largest code division multiple access operator, Reliance Infocomm, be given additional spectrum to offer 3G-equivalent services. On the other hand, the second largest CDMA player, Tata Teleservices, and global system for mobiles (GSM) operators like Bharti, Hutch and Idea are proposed to be allotted frequencies that cannot initially be used for offering third-generation (3G) mobile services. It comes with another rider that the 2x15MHz 900 and 1800 bands will be made available once the defence services vacate the frequencies. While refusing to comment on the draft, Trai officials said the existing paper was being reworked and changes were likely to be made before the policy was released on Friday. The draft in its present form will benefit Reliance Infocomm, which can offer Evolution Data Only (EVDO) services, the equivalent of 3G for GSM operators, once it is allotted 2.5 units of additional spectrum. Tata Teleservices, Bharti, Hutch and Idea will have to wait until December 2006 when the IMT 2000 band is made available for offering 3G services like streaming video and interactive radio on cellular handsets. Each operator is proposed to be given 2x10 MHz of IMT 2000. The draft also proposes that players like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, Reliance and Bharti, which are in both the CDMA and GSM business, be treated as a single entity for IMT 2000 allocation. The announcement of the policy has been delayed because Trai officials are divided over the issue as well as by the pressure from the GSM and the CDMA lobbies. "CDMA operators already have plenty of spectrum to spare. As separate dedicated carriers are needed to roll out EVDO, the two additional carriers will provide the largest CDMA operator plenty of additional space to roll out next generation services, while we will be forced to wait for the same until December 2006," said an executive with a leading GSM player. When asked to comment on the draft recommendations, TV Ramachandran, director-general, Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), the body representing all GSM players said: "The regulator's move has helped secure a backdoor entry into 3G for the largest CDMA player. This will further benefit the first backdoor entrant into 3G through the EVDO route and it will have a tremendous first mover advantage. The WLL history is going to repeat itself." In an internal communication to its members, the COAI said, "The recommendations are against the government policy guidelines which state that additional spectrum should be allotted on the basis of subscriber numbers alone. CDMA operators do not have any justification for even 5 MHz of spectrum in any service area except Delhi, where Reliance has just become entitled to 5MHz and is eligible for another carrier only after one year or more." # Freeing the frequencies The regulator has recommended that existing mobile operators get 3G spectrum at no additional cost # Ceiling on annual spectrum charges to be reduced from 6% of the adjusted gross revenue to 4% # Before spectrum is assigned to new service providers, existing players must have adequate spectrum # Spectrum should be provided as and when available, no reserves to be kept # CDMA players to be provided extra spectrum in 450 MHz and 1800 MHz on demand Courtesy - rediff.com

RD, PPF, Infrastructure Bonds etc are all good for tax saving purpose... PPF is a good choice for safe investment as it offers 8% interest rate.. But you can invest maximum of only 70K per year.. If you want to get better returns Stocks are a good option.. but its risky!!
