  1. State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited on Tuesday said there was a possibility of increasing the rentals and call charges of fixed line phones, even in the rural areas, to make up for losses due to lowering of levy rates announced by telecom regulator TRAI recently. "We are looking at some re-arrangements to compensate for the loss to the tune of Rs 1,254 crore (Rs 12.54 billion) due to lowered Access Deficit Charge. The options include upward revision in the monthly rentals, increasing call charges and reducing free calls," BSNL CMD A K Sinha said. BSNL offers telecom services across the country except in Delhi and Mumbai where the services are offered by MTNL. Asked if the corporation would be able to make these changes as the issue was politically sensitive, Sinha said: "We have written to the Department of Telecom listing out detailed analysis of the new ADC regime including its impact and the options available with us." There are about 16 million village telephones on which the rental varied between Rs 50 to 100 per month and on top of that there were free calls, Sinha quipped and pointed out that cost based rental comes to about Rs 362 a month. BSNL has been charging Rs 1.20 for a three-minute call as against TRAI's prescribed Rs 1.20 for a two-minute call. Sinha also said that loss of Rs 1,254 crore due to new ADC rates could impact BSNL's future investment programme.

"There should be a master video-display to monitor all computers by the cyber cafe owner," Singh told IANS. All district magistrates and superintendents of police have been informed of the ban and asked to conduct surprise raids. Offenders can be fined up to Rs 2,00,000 and jailed for 10 years. First-time violators face a fine of up to Rs 1,00,000 and imprisonment for five years. District officials have been asked to maintain a dossier of all cyber cafes. 7. German consumer electronics major G-Hanz has launched its 'harmless radiation' mobile phones in India. The company is also in talks with the Indian government for setting up a manufacturing base in the country. "The newly launched handsets have a biochip technology which eliminates the effects of electro-magnetic radiation by superimposing a random noise field, so that these radiations become neutral to human tissue," G-Hanz chief executive officer U K Ghosh said. The company is also working on introducing a handset that will be priced below Rs 5,000. The company has signed up cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as the brand ambassador for the product and expects to secure 1 per cent of the total mobile phone market in the country. According to Sachin, "The company is committed to protecting people with safer phones." The biochip technology, which mitigates the effects of EMR, was developed by US-based EMX Corporation. G-Hanz has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with EMX Corporation and has formed a new company - G-Hanz EMF Telecom - which would be selling the handsets in the country, he said. G-Hanz has earmarked $5 million for promotional and marketing activities in the country. EMX Corporation chairman J P Folsgaard Bak said this is the first time any mobile phone manufacturer had addressed the safety issue of radiation on a scientific basis. The technology has been tested and proven by The Catholic University of America, Washington after 18 years of research. These 'safe phones' can protect you from cancer, memory loss and even Parkinson's diseases caused by radiation from mobile phones, he added.
  8. US-based search engine Google plans to launch a free telephone service that would link users via a broadband Internet connection using a headset and a home computer. Although the technology has been in the market for quite some time, no telecom firm has ever used it properly. In a report, The Times said, BT, which connects seven out of ten British households, has developed its own Internet-telephone service. However, the telephone giant, which would be the biggest loser if Google succeeds in its venture, has so far been reluctant to promote the technology heavily. Since Google already conducts half of all Internet enquiries, the telephone service is most likely to be linked to its search engine. The Times said, a surfer looking for a clothes retailer could simply find the web site and click on the screen to speak to the shop. While the basic cost of making the call over the Net will be almost nothing, the real cost lies in developing the software. Also connecting the Internet call with the traditional call will incur some cost. The Times warns that the 'sound quality of calls across the Internet can be poor and the connections can be less reliable.' However, by investing in capacity, Google 'could circumvent the problems of quality and reliability and guarantee better service,' says The Times. With the collapse of the Internet bubble in 2001, thousands of miles of fibre-optic cable remain unused, as the amount of 'speculative development vastly exceeded demand.' Google could lap up this capacity at a very cheap rate. But using the Net to make phone calls is not a new concept. The Times points out that, in Japan, 10 per cent of households already use voice over Internet protocol or VoIP. In the US too it is quite popular. Stanford University graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded Google in 1996. Google went public in 2004.

  14. Unveiled: Petrol Pumps Of The Future

Reliance Petro, the petroleum business unit of Reliance Industries Limited, has embarked upon retail expansion binge in a big way to become the biggest player in the private sector. Marketing advisor of Reliance Petro S K Kapoor told PTI that by the end of the current financial year, the company plans to increase the number of retail outlets from 300 to 1000. Kapoor said although Reliance was putting up most of the ROs along state and national highways, the company was also looking at premium locations in various metropolitan cities and towns across the country. Reliance Petro also supplies petro products to the various oil companies in the public sector from its refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat. Kapoor said the present arrangement in this regard would remain valid till March 31, 2005. The Jamnagar refinery was one of the biggest in Asia with a refining capacity of 33 million tonnes per annum, out of which 12 mtpa was diesel, three mtpa was petrol, 2.5 mtpa was LPG, and the balance was naphtha, paraxylene and petcoke consumed directly by the petrochemicals plant of the company. Besides land-based ROs, the company is also planning to introduce mobile outlets for which trucks would be pressed in service carrying 10 kilolitres of petroleum products each. For this, the company had approached the concerned authorities for getting the necessary approvals. Reliance Petro would also retail petro products in barges, which would have the capacity to carry 500 kilolitres. He said that the self-propelled barges would ferry along inland waterways to meet the fuel requirements of fishermen and others. The company had already commissioned a floating diesel outlet in the Namkhana region in the Sunderbans area where fishing trawlers would be able to fulfill their fuel supply requirements from the water itself. Talking about exports, he said that the company was exporting 60 per cent of diesel and 70 per cent of petrol to USA and other countries on long-term contract basis. The entire LPG production was being sold to the PSUs, he said. Reliance Petro imports all its crude requirement. Asked about the price, which it charges, he said that the company sells the petro products at par with those of PSUs.

  23. In a move that is bound to bring cheer to corporates, Internet service providers, BPOs and software companies, leased-line tariffs in the country are set to witness a significant reduction. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has completed the consultation phase and is finalising the revised rates. While declining to specify the date, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India member D P S Seth said, "The revised rates will be announced by the end of the month." According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India executives, the revised rates were drafted after the regulator had compared the existing lease-line prices in various countries, including China, Australia, Singapore, the US and UK. "A whole list of parameters have been considered as we are aware that there can be no across-the-board comparison with foreign operators," said a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India executive. He however added that studying the international market had a bearing on the revised rates. "A revision is long overdue. It is a fact that bandwidth rates in India are higher than global prices. Bandwidth rates account for a major component of the input costs for telecom and other service providers. Our information technology services need to be revised if they are to remain competitive in the global market," said Amitab Singhal, president of the Internet Service Providers Association of India. The regulator had issued a consultation paper proposing that the leased-line charges be reduced by 70 per cent: the fee for the 64 kbps be brought down from Rs 96,000 per annum to Rs 24,000 (per annum) and that of the 2 mbps line be reduced from Rs 22 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh. The state-owned service providers, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, however, fear that a drastic reduction in leased-line charges is likely to make the business of leased lines unviable, apart from eating into their revenues. BSNL has already replied to the regulator's proposal, and has said the proposed changes "have been made arbitrarily... and are pre-determined without any logical basis". "We have taken these factors into consideration," was Seth's response to these concerns.
  24. And the rules and regulations they make contain umpteen loopholes also......
