RIMweb Meet - V - Mumbai - 6th Jan, Joggers Park 1630 hrs onwards
Rahul Always replied to ashoksoft's topic in The Lounge
Just thought I would add a few questions so that people can answer them and also provide inputs for everyone else, so that we all are on the same plane. Is it just people meeting up over a cup of coffee (?) or is it more formalised with presentations etc? To be more specific, what is the agenda? How will the venue be? If it is a public place, then there would not involve any kind of rentals etc but places like CCD or pubs etc may not appreciate the idea of so many people lingering on for so long with limited business. Better would be if a hall or some location could be hired and the expenses shared. Again my two cents. If it is going to be a formalised affair including introducing people to business models, then would buying/selling be involved/allowed? Is the entire affair going to be moderated or would it be a free-for-all? Logistics will play an important role in any meet and this is going to be no exception either. How many people would mind shelling out some money so that both hall charges (if any) and refreshments are covered? And what would be the upper limit for such "cover charges"? Any sponsors? Regards Rahul Plus: The idea of two months notice sounds sensible since people would get a definite time to re-organise their lives just to be able to attend. It would be sad that just the short notice prevents someone from meeting up. -
RIMweb Meet - V - Mumbai - 6th Jan, Joggers Park 1630 hrs onwards
Rahul Always replied to ashoksoft's topic in The Lounge
Hi This is with regard to the RIMWEB meet. Yes, it would be certainly good to meet up since most of us out here know each other only "virtually". Being able to fix a face to a name certainly will increase the level of interaction of members for sure. Having said that, I had a certain basic query. You talk of - for techies, by techies, and from techies. What about certain non-techies like us out here? Do I understand that this meet is only for people who are into programming/selling etc? Or would access be permitted for all? What are the requirements of being able to attend this meet? I would prefer if the meet can be held on a weekend (which I am sure most of us too would prefer) since it would enable a lot of people to attend. And if there is a specific agenda, then would prefer if the same can be provided in advance along with the damages to be paid. Regards Rahul -
External Hard Drive not detected by PC
Rahul Always replied to PKC19's topic in General Technical Discussion
Could be a problem with the formatting of the Hard Disk, so if you do not have any valuable data on it, you can try and go for formatting the drive. If the drive itself is not detected, then could be an issue with the cable as suggested by Ankit above. -
"Diwali", the festival of lights, illuminates the darkness of the New Year's moon, and strengthens our close friendships and knowledge, with a self-realization! Diwali is one of the biggest festival of Hindus, celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in India. The festival is celebrated for five continuous days, where the third days is celebrated as the main Diwali festival or 'Festival of lights'. Different colorful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light up diyas and candles all around their house. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings of Goddess of Wealth. The festival od Diwali is never complete without exchange of gifts. People present diwali gifts to all near and dear ones. Diwali or Deepawali is the festival of lights and sweetness. It is basically a symbol of the victory of good over evil, brightness over darkness, and truth over falsity. Each and every legend associated with this fabulous festival gives the same message. The thick dark new-moon (Amavasya) night on which the Diwali festival is celebrated, seems like a full-moon (Purnima) night, because of the effulgent light of numerous diyas or deepaks lighted on this night. These diyasnot only make Diwali, the festival of lights, but they also symbolize the supremacy and consequence of brightness over darkness. The same message is given by the Hindu Upanishads by saying, “Asato Ma Sadgamaya”. The lighted diyas on Diwali also remind us of the same teaching of the Upanishads. Diya can be defined as a small earthen lamp that is specially lit on Diwali for pujan and decoration purposes. A cotton wick is used in diyas, and oil or ghee serves as the burning fuel. Diyas are plain and colored, big and small, simple and fancy, and so. Different types of diyas are appropriate for different applications. Children could also make their own diyas as a fun activity on Diwali. This could be done by using clay or dough. It is better not to use a wool wick in ghee diyas. As the festive season approaches near, markets get flooded with various types of gifts, decoration, and puja items. The crafted and designer diyas are one of the big attractions in such markets. Diyas embellished with zari, painted patterns, mirrors, etc. are quite enticing by their very appearance. Diwali melas, markets, and haats, showcase a multitude of handcrafted items made by ceramic and handicraft artists throughout the country. Diwali diyas are one of the major attractions in such markets. Besides the conventional single spout diyas, multi spout diyas like 10, 11, and 21 spout diyas, and Laxmi-Ganesha diyas can be seen in Diwali markets. Also, multicolored and vibrant colored diyas present in diwali haats and diwali melas look fabulous. However old may be the tradition of diyas on Diwali, it has never lost its significance and charm. Diwali celebrations are incomplete and graceless without the use of Diwali diyas. There is no doubt, diyas were, are, and will remain a significant part of the Diwali festival. Diwali Mela Diwali Mela or Diwali Fete are extremely popular not just in India but all over the world. These help people to celebrate the popular ‘Festival of Lights’ with gaiety and enthusiasm within their own community. Diwali Mela serves a very important role as the festival of Diwali is celebrated in individual homes. Diwali Melas that are normally celebrated on a weekend a few days after Diwali helps to bring the community together and share the greetings of the festival. For Hindu community outside India, Diwali Mela is a means to bond with cultural roots and acquaint children to the rich Indian culture and heritage. Date of future Diwali Diwali 2010 : Friday, November 5 Diwali 2011 : Wednesday, October 26 Diwali 2012 : Tuesday, November 13 Diwali 2013 : Sunday, November 3 Diwali 2014 : Thursday, October 23 Diwali 2015 : Wednesday, November 11 Diwali 2016 : Sunday, October 30 Diwali 2017 : Thursday, October 19 Diwali 2018 : Wednesday, November 7 Diwali 2019 : Sunday, October 27 Diwali 2020 : Saturday, November 14 The Significance & Meaning of Diwali The Diwali festival in India has a deep significance since ancient times. According to the Vedic culture, the message of Diwali is to eradicate the world from darkness and lead it towards the self-illuminated light within. Here, each individual is likened to a brightly lit clay lamp. The message is to collectively participate in the Endeavour, as it is not just the effort of one individual. The differences between the high and low are forgotten, as the aim is to usher in equanimity and equality in society. Traditionally, the celebration of the Diwali festival in India is associated with a number of mythological events. In Northern India, Diwali is celebrated to rejoice the return of King Rama to his Kingdom Ayodhaya after a 14 year exile and victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhaya light an array of clay lamps to celebrate his return. In Southern India, another legend describes the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. In western India, it is celebrated in the honour of the King Bali who went to rule the nether world by the order of Lord Vishnu. Courtesy

Updated: Pesky SMSs/Calls: Major relief to users from March 21, 2011
Rahul Always replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
I too am unable to forward the SMS to 1909 using my Google Nexus S 4G on Reliance post paid CDMA. It keeps giving error message. Further, I tried to lodge a complaint against the errant number with CC regarding pesky SMS. Reliance has now replied saying that the Telemarketer number is invalid and hence request cannot be processed! This is the second time that I am getting am SMS from the same number and now am at wits end. Can anyone tell me how to take the case further? Sending a mail to TRAI also did not work out since there has been no response from TRAI after the mail Regards Rahul -

^^^ The issue was not just cost but also availability of LPG cylinders. I live in an area where I dont have piped LPG connections (which would have been the best!). So am forced to depend on the vagaries of the LPG dealer who can delay the supply if he wants to. At least with the induction cooker and with almost assured 24X7 power supply, we can continue to remain independent. Which is why I finally decided to move to the induction cooker. But yes, I agree with you that it may not mean as economical as I might have liked it to be. Anyway, thanks all. I guess I ended up starting a discussion from which many other members too would benefit. I am sure there are lot of other members who might be contemplating about purchasing an induction cooker. Rahul Always replied to rajanmehta's topic in General Technical Discussion
^^^ Thanks for the reply. What I was looking for is mainly the difference between the various models available today in the market. Most of the products are from reputed manufacturers like Bajaj, Inalsa, Khaitan, Philips etc, so reliability would not be an issue. Why is there such a price difference and what exactly should I look into while going for an induction cooker. I would place my budget at 2K-3K (max). Is there anything special that I should specifically pay attention to (features like presets, power rating, glass tops etc) Regards Rahul- 6,376 replies

With the price of LPG going through the roof, I have finally decided to go for an induction stove. I am sure other members too would have done so or at least contemplating to buy one. Basically wanted advice on which would be the most suitable induction stove to buy almost as a replacement for the gas stove. Any one with experience, data etc may please help me since am confused with the range of products available in the market. It is for both SMS and calls. In fact, it is easier for you that you are getting messages from LM, DM etc since these are "registered" marketeers who have been allotted that status by TRAI. In case of any violation, they will immediately lose their deposit. http://www.nccptrai.gov.in/nccpregistry/ http://www.nccptrai.gov.in/nccpregistry/Guidelines%20for%20Customer.pdf http://www.nccptrai.gov.in/nccpregistry/How%20to%20Register%20complaint.pdf Check out this for further info. Windows 8 upgrade for less
Rahul Always replied to ::: VA :::'s topic in General Technical Discussion
Even at Rs 699, am still debating the utility value considering that I have licensed versions of Win 7 on both my laptop and home PC. I guess I will give it a pass even though I did put in the effort of generating the required code! The fun part of Win 8 would be once you have a touch screen (which I lack as of now) so I will just simply skip this one update! By the way, thanks to the OP for the info Regards Rahul -
If your number is registered with DND, please call up your service provider within 72 hours of getting the SMS and register a complaint. The service provider is required to give you a docket number indicating receipt of the complaint and forward the same to TRAI. You can check up status of the complaint on TRAI website after 72 hours which will indicate whether your complaint has been registered or not. Regards Rahul

Apple used to be renowned for its quality out of the box and there never used to be issues AFAIK regarding its hardware (or for that matter its software too). It is indeed sad that Apple too is going the way of other phone manufacturers and letting their core values slip. For the cost that people are willing to shell out just for "If you dont have an iPhone, you dont have an iPhone" part, Apple needs to ensure that it continues to maintain the same standard that it was always known for. Else we soon would have a new slogan..... "If you dont have an iPhone, You dont have an iPhone ... And will be glad for it too!" Regards Rahul

Facebook lists user phone numbers for all to see There's no easy way to look up someone's mobile-phone number. White pages? Nope. Directory assistance? Uh-uh. It's something that drives telemarketers and pollsters crazy, as there are millions of people, especially young ones, who don't have any landlines and can't easily be reached by strangers. But it turns out Facebook has been openly listing mobile numbers all along, as Indian security researcher Suriya Prakash discovered recently. Needless to say, he wasn't happy about it. "I would consider my most 'personal' data saved on Facebook to be my mobile number as it is somewhat of a bridge interlinking both my personal and online life," Prakash explained in a blog posting this past Thursday. "I would not like people I don't want getting a hold of it." Prakash had earlier told Facebook about his discovery, but the company told him there were no security issues involved as the rate of queries from a particular source would be limited as a guard against automated attacks. Prakash found that that was true for the desktop version of Facebook, but not the mobile one. [11 Facebook Privacy Steps to Take Now] Try it yourself To use Prakash's method, log into Facebook on a desktop browser, copy this URL and paste it into the address bar:http://m.facebook.com/search/?query=123456789 Then substitute a Facebook friend's mobile number for the number string and hit "Enter." (Be sure to include the country code prefix — "1" for the U.S. and Canada, "44" for Britain, "33" France and so on.) If your Facebook friend has listed his mobile number on Facebook, or if he's got a Facebook app on his smartphone, it'll show right up. In many cases, it works for "friends of friends" and for total strangers. Why? As Prakash found, the default Facebook privacy setting for "Who can look you up using the email address or phone number you provided?" is "Everyone." (To see it yourself, click on the downward facing arrow next to the "Home" button in the upper-right corner of your Facebook page, then click "Edit Settings" next to "How You Connect.") Contacted by TechNewsDaily, a Facebook representative said this was a feature, not a flaw. "The ability to search for a person by phone number is intentional behavior and not a bug in Facebook," the representative wrote in an email. "By default, your privacy settings allow everyone to find you with search and friend finder using the contact info you have provided, such as your email address and phone number. You can modify these settings at any time from the Privacy Settings page. "Facebook has developed an extensive system for preventing the malicious usage of our search functionality and the scenario described by the researcher was indeed rate-limited and eventually blocked. We are constantly updating these systems to improve their effectiveness and address new kinds of attacks." Gold mine of information Until yesterday (Oct. 8), a savvy telemarketer could have created a computer script generating possible mobile-phone numbers, then harvested whatever real names were matched to them through Facebook. To prove it, Prakash did exactly that, running through thousands of possible mobile numbers in India and in New York City. (Unlike the rest of North America, New York an area code dedicated to mobile numbers.) You can see a small subset — 850 names — of Prakash's results here. If you've got a New York mobile number in the format (917) 5x2-xxxx, you may even be on it. Another researcher, Tyler Borland, wrote an even faster script that looked up 10 numbers at once. "I was able to verify data for 1 phone number every second," Borland told Computerworld. With a botnet of 100,000 hijacked computers, Prakash estimated, the entire Facebook mobile-phone-listing database could have been harvested in a few days. Facebook tweaked its settings to limit the number of responses it would give to a specific IP address. But the method still works manually. TechNewsDaily was able to find the mobile numbers of four strangers, all of whom had presumably not tweaked their default privacy settings, by slowly running through a list of 20 possible New York numbers. Stumbling into it Prakash discovered this Facebook feature after he noticed that his smartphone Facebook app suggested adding friends from his phone's contact list, based on his contacts' mobile-phone numbers. In fact, he could see his contacts' profile photos and link to their Facebook profiles, even without having "friended" them on Facebook. "What it does is that it compares the contact list from your phone to the FB database to see if you have any friends that are in your contacts but not on your Facebook account," he wrote. "I also later figured out that simply 'searching' a person's phone number (including country code) will show you their account." Source: Fox News

India's biggest security threat: Your made in China electronics can send data back to China
Rahul Always replied to shadow's topic in General Technical Discussion
It is not only Huawei or ZTE that is to be blamed. It is something that is more or less across the board. It has to do with majority of our computer hardware being made in China. I am not saying that it is only China that is bad. Till the time we are not self sufficient as regards our hardware and software requirements, we would continue to be at the receiving end of everything bad that is happening out in the WWW. To bolster my case, I am placing reference to an article from Digit Magazine which incidentally was also reported by most of the major newspapers across where the Indian Armed Forces have realised about the threats that these "minor" devices can actually cause to our sovereignty. The aim of these words is not to cause harm or hurt anyone's feelings. It is just to make us all aware on how much we all trust our smart devices and accept blindly the fact that we do share sensitive data which could hinder our own progress or unknowingly benefit our rivals. Link Regards Rahul PS: Coming to the point of software, we all most of us use Windows as our OS without even knowing whether any kind of control has been incorporated in it my Microsoft, which after all is an American firm and would definitely look after US interests much ahead of any one else, if things came to the firing line.
