  3. Motorola May Release RAZR V9 Ferrari Limited Edition With all of the hub-bub on the MOTO front with executives coming and going and re-working the company's mobile handset division, Motorola is still managing to hook up with the big names like Ferrari and apparently launch a few Limited Edition handsets with the renowned car maker. The MOTO Z8 Edition was launched somewhere at the end of last year and this 'souped' up RIZR Ferrari colored handset came loaded with goodies that included videos, wallpapers and ringtones as well as a rather generous pre-registration to the official Ferrari website. MOTO's latest, it seems, is the RAZR V9 that will also bear the famous Prancing Horse, and come with a lamb-skin case that will have the Ferrari logo. The handset's specs won't be any different. Some of the features include a 2MP camera, Bluetooth with A2DP, MicroSD card support and a secondary 2-inch semi-touch sensitive, external display. The good news so far is that the handset just might make it to Asia but you know these darn Limited Editions cost a bundle. No price has been officially pinned to the handset yet. Source : Tech2

The handset is made using a sapphire crystal screen and a chassis built from high grade titanium that gives the Ascent Ti its distinctive name. 'Ti' is the chemical symbol for Titanium, a non-corrosive element with the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. The new collection of sounds features recordings of original Ferrari engine sounds taken from the F430 and the 612 Scaglietti. 14. BlackBerry bosses say 'we are not sweating the iPhone' 17 Jul, 2008, 0835 hrs IST TORONTO: It seems BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) is not losing its sleep over the euphoria created by the iPhone worldwide. Steering clear of the iPhone, top echelon at BlackBerry maker at its annual general meeting Tuesday night instead talked about bringing out better products in the future. When shareholders quizzed the top management about their response to the iPhone 3G launch, RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie reportedly said his company was not ``sweating the iPhone.'' He said RIM would keep up the momentum and stay focussed on the future, alluding to the new launches planned by the Canadian wireless giant. To match the iPhone, the company is soon likely to unveil the BlackBerry Bold which matches the Apple's device feature for feature. Like the iPhone, BlackBerry Bold will also operate on the much faster, next-generation 3G network and have a built-in GPS. The company - which has over 16 million BlackBerry subscribers around the world - has seen its base among non-corporate types grow rapidly during the past two years. Accordingly, to woo students, teens and the youth who have fallen madly for the iPhone because of its touch-screen technology, RIM is said to be developing its touch-screen device to be called BlackBerry Thunder. But the company has not said anything about it yet. Another device, aimed at older people and moms, may also be unveiled soon. Perhaps, the company's new advertising slogan of `BlackBerry for life' sums up its future plans. The BlackBerry bosses also told the shareholders that India, Brazil and Russia were high on the priority list for the $90-billion company started by a college drop-out in 1984.

  17. Raja ready to quit over spectrum allocation row The Times of India l 8 Nov l New Delhi NEW DELHI: Telecom minister A Raja, accused by the Left of being responsible for a Rs 51,000 crore scam on allocation of spectrum, on Friday offered to resign if proved guilty. This offer came in the middle of a hurried press conference addressed by Raja, flanked by DoT officials. The controversy centres on award of 2G telecom licences for a total of Rs 9,000 crore on January 10. It has been alleged that this amounted to severe underpricing, causing a loss of almost Rs 51,000 crore to the exchequer. Recently, new licencees Swan and Unitech, which invested Rs 1,537 crore and Rs 1,651 crore respectively on spectrum, received enterprise valuations of 9,400 crore and Rs 11,620 crore. They received these valuations even though they have no telecom infrastructure, cash flows or customers. Raja's argument is that the decision to allot licences on a first-come-first-served (FCFS) basis rather than holding auctions rested on the national telecom policy of 1999 and recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in August 2007. When questioned on the reason for overlooking the successful spectrum auctions of 2001 for the fourth mobile licence, Raja said, "I don't think any auctions took place in 2001." The minister was seemingly unaware that the Rs 1,651 crore price at which spectrum was sold in 2008 was discovered through open, competitive, multi-stage transparent bidding (auction) conducted for the fourth mobile license in mid-2001 when the subscriber base was merely 4.2 million, compared with over 315 million today. Raja made NTP 99 and Trai's 2007 recommendations the bedrock of his choice of FCFS over auctions for allocating new licences at 2001 prices. But the telecom ministry's press release of October 31, 2008, anchors the move on a Cabinet decision of November 2003. Interestingly, the 2003 Cabinet decision endorses auctions. It seals a decision by a group of ministers, which in turn, accepted Trai's 2003 recommendations on unified access service licences (UASL). In section 7.39, Trai writes: "As the existing players have to improve efficiency and utilization of spectrum and if the government ensures availability of additional spectrum, then in the existing licensing regime, they may introduce additional players through a multi-stage bidding process as was followed for the fourth cellular operator." Asked why he favoured only a handful of companies out of the 46 that applied for licences, Raja again attributed it to Trai recommendations. Later, when reminded that Trai had asked DoT to raise the licence fee from the 2001 level to prevent revenue loss, Raja ignored the question. Raja also suggested that revenue share collections would eventually compensate for auction revenues. However, auction-based entry fee and revenue share, in fact, run concurrently. India's 2001 auctions are a case in point. New entrants paid an entry fee through an auction route and continue to pay revenue share till today.

  20. iPhone Modified With Qwerty Keyboard Try out this innovation Not many people like to type on an onscreen keyboard. Though iPhone's keyboard is decent enough, there will be many out there who will disagree with me. Apparently a guy from Japan didn't like it either and decided to take matters into his own hands. The result is visible from the image. He took his jailbroken iPhone, hooked it up to a QWERTY keyboard, and modified the cable. Check out the video, and you can see what the above maneuver makes the iPhone look like, an outdated digital diary. Oh, and yes, it still doesn't support Copy-Paste. Courtesy : Techtree

  22. BSNL 'Mandi on Mobile' Service in UP Boon to illiterate farmers BSNL in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Marketing Board (Mandi Parishad) is planning to soft-launch a voice-based 'Mandi on Mobile' service. It will allow farmers to call up a Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) number and get the rate of commodities, like vegetables, grains, pulses or fruits in any mandi (market) across the state. BSNL has tied up with OnMobile to offer this service. The 'solely voice-based' service will allow farmers in UP to get to know the latest mandi rates of around 108 commodities by simply dialing a number and by following the simple voice command subsequently. The farmer has to just name the product and the district and he will be told the tehsil (administrative unit)-wise rates. The voice-based service is expected to be beneficial to farmers, especially to those who are illiterate (they will not have to type in various numbers for various commodities). The soft-launch of the Mandi on Mobile service is expected in 2 weeks. It is currently being cleansed of minor technical problems, say representatives. A similar effort by Reliance 'Mandi on Mobile' was initiated in 2004. The service was SMS-based and enables farmers to keep track of real-time prices of commodities. In 2007, Reliance Communications had introduced 'Live Mandi Prices' on Reliance Mobile World. Courtesy : Techtree

  25. Govt may charge Rs 4,000cr one-time levy for extra spectrum Press Trust of India / New Delhi l November 7, 2008 The Government may charge a one-time fee of Rs 4,000 cr for additional spectrum, Telecom Minister A Raja said today. "The Telecom Commission will meet next week to decide on the one-time fee on spectrum beyond 6.2 Mhz. It could be Rs 4,000 cr. The Commission will also discuss the hike in fee by 1-2% of mobile operators' revenue for using additional airwaves. In all, the Government may get an additional Rs 5,000 cr towards increased spectrum charges," he said. The Commission will decide when the increase will take effect. 1 % of the telcos' adjusted gross revenue will be charged for spectrum up to 8 Mhz and two per cent for spectrum up to 10 Mhz. This will affect all leading telecom operators, including the leading player Bharti Airtel and rivals Reliance Communications and Idea Cellular. The decision was taken after he met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday, Raja said. It is in line with a recommendation the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India made earlier this year.
