Microsoft Launches Anti-piracy Campaign in 49 Countries In its bid to clamp down on rampant software piracy, Microsoft Tuesday announced a global initiative under the banner of 'Global Anti-Piracy Awareness Day' that will include educating consumers as well as enforcing legal action. Even though the initiative was rolled out in 49 countries, Microsoft's director of intellectual property in Australia told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper that the Redmond-based software giant would not be able to solve the problem fully ever. "Are we able to solve absolutely every problem? No… there are some people who will always not want to pay for something and there are always people who will want to exploit," she said in an interview to the Australian newspaper. The program, launched in 49 countries spanning six continents, aims to combat the trade of pirated and counterfeit software. The initiative includes intellectual property awareness campaigns, engagements with partner businesses, educational forums, local law enforcement training, and legal actions against alleged software counterfeiters and pirates. "Software piracy and counterfeiting is a sophisticated global trade and Microsoft is committed to working with industry partners in India and around the world to stay a step ahead of this criminal industry," said Vipul Sant, director - original software initiative, Microsoft India. For the India chapter, the company has tied up with the Kolkata-based Computer Association of Eastern India (COMPASS) and the Guwahati-based North East Computer Traders Association (NECTA) to educate members on the pitfalls and risks of piracy. "Sustained industry efforts have helped reduce software piracy in India by four percentage points in as many years and we are committed to continuing on this path and working closely with the government, law enforcement agencies and our customer and partner communities to protect legitimate businesses from this illegal trade," Sant added. As part of its enforcement measures, Microsoft has taken 15 civil enforcement actions against resellers indulging in hard-disk loading case, involving Microsoft Windows and Office. Courtesy : Tech2

Motorola Aura for the Nouveau Riche It's got the works Motorola has also jumped into the luxury handset market with the launch of it's Aura mobile phone. The handset competes with the Nokia's Arte series and Vertu phones. Design wise the Motorola Aura looks similar to the Motorola V70 but is clearly for the uber rich, with its unique circular display made up of scratch-resistant Grade 1 62-carat sapphire crystal and the body comes with chemically etched textures and patterns over stainless steel housing. The gears that help the front panel to rotate are coated with Tungsten Carbide. Motorola claims that the Swiss made 130 precision ball bearings and rotating mechanism will offer consistent rotation ease in long run as well. On the technology part -- the phone supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and features 2 megapixel camera, 2GB internal memory, Bluetooth and aluminum keypad. The phone will be available from December at fat price of $2000 approximately. Willing to say - Hello Moto? Courtesy : Techtree

HP's New Smartphones Revealed One emphasizes voice communication, the other affords easier data exchange HP has unveiled two iPAQ branded Windows Mobile 6.1-based smartphones featuring new navigation control. The two new iPAQ smartphones -- Voice Messenger and Data Messenger were displayed on the HP website with dedicated pages each and are targeted at the business mobile users. The Voice Messenger has candy bar form factor while Data Messenger is a slider with touchscreen display. The Voice Messenger has a 2.4-inch LED backlit display offering a 320x240 resolution, a 20-key QWERTY keypad, WLAN (the radio support includes 802.11 b/g with WPA2 security, 3G-ready supporting Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA and Tri-band UMTS). This phone sports Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard running on 128MB SDRAM, 256MB Flash ROM and also features 3.1-megapixel autofocus camera, A-GPS and has 1260mAh Lithium Polymer battery. While the Data Messenger carries similar specs it mostly differs in its 2.8-inch 320x240 touchscreen display. Since it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, editing of documents through the Mobile Office pack will be possible; interestingly it sports the Opera browser as well. Surprisingly, this model has a 1140 mAh Lithium Polymer battery by default -- not a lot of juice for a touchscreen enabled device. However both phones feature a power save mode. Both phones have an optical sensor that offers five-way navigation control. The iPAQ Voice Messenger will ship on 5th November for $532 while Data Messenger will ship for whooping $665 on 22nd November. It might take a while to hit Indian shores and we'll keep you updated on the same. Courtesy : Techtree

HTC's Biased Windows Mobile Upgrade Keeps India waiting HTC's global website has a reminder message flashing on its website. If you own an HTC device with Windows Mobile version lower than 6, you may be interested in a free upgrade being offered by the company; especially if you own one of these devices: HTC S621, HTC S620, HTC P4350, HTC P3300, and HTC Advantage. To check the version on your HTC device, go to Start > Settings > System tab > About. The free upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for HTC devices is available till October 31, 2008. The upgrade link will be removed from HTC's website at 12:00 pm (noon) GMT on the same date. Now here's the interesting part: This free upgrade is about to reach its expiry stage, and it is still not available in India. We spoke to the company representatives and they say that plans to extend this upgradation program to India is in the pipeline. Wonder when that will happen; in a couple of years perhaps? Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
Honest replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
3G auction to take place by Jan 15 Business Line l 22 Oct l New Delhi Move to help telecom companies tide over funds crunch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3G auction schedule Auction design, bid document to be prepared by November 30 Inviting operators to bid: December 15 Prequalification of bidders: December 31 Auction to be completed by January 15 Signing of contracts with successful bidders by January 25 Depositing of first tranch of auction money by January 31 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ongoing liquidity crunch may not impact telecom operators’ plans to bid for third generation spectrum, with the Government deciding to conduct the auction in January. The Department of Telecom had earlier planned to conduct the auction by December 31 but has now postponed it by two weeks to January 15 after the operators and bankers sought extension. “We have no problems in completing the auction by December 31 as was planned earlier but bankers and operators have asked for extending the timeline. We will complete the auction by January 15,” said Mr Siddhartha Behura, Secretary, DoT. Industry representatives indicated that by pushing the auction to January, DoT has taken care of the liquidity crunch that operators may have faced due to the global financial crisis. “January is when most global funds start a new financial year. By conducting the auction in January, telecom players will be able to source adequate funds as the institutions would be having their funds available for the entire year,” said an industry representative. According to the schedule worked out by DoT, operators will be asked to put in their expression of interest to take part in the bidding by December 15. The schedule prepared by DoT comes after the Finance Ministry expressed concern at the delay in conducting the auction. This also assumes significance because there was a feeling within the industry that the 3G auction may get delayed due to the global financial crisis. The difference between GSM and CDMA operators over bifurcation of 2G and 3G revenue was also being seen as a delaying factor. DoT has sought to dispel any confusion over 3G auction by preparing the detailed schedule.
