  3. My dear friends, it seems that through this thread we are DEFINETELY going to loose some of our friends, because the debate here doesn't going in a healthy manner. Some members taking it personally. Whereas I think no one have mentioned anyone's name but still some of our friends here thinks that we are pointing towards them. But thats not the fact at all my dear friends. You can see a lot of posts where we had appreciated all the efforts of many members regardless to their status. May be they are juniors or seniors. We respect all members. All my dear friends, please keep this in mind, first of all we are friends here. These biggies, whether it may be Nokia, LG, Samsung or Reputed Chinese Brands are almost after that. First is our neat and clean forum i.e. Rimweb, then our friend circle (members) and then only comes these biggies regardless to their brands. So, we doesn't want to loose our friendship in the sake of this unhealthy debate. Thats why we are going to Close this thread. And Sadik Bhai, I prefer to read the news regarding TELECOM on our beloved forum rather then BBC. Anyways, Eid Mubarak to you and to Mufaddal Sahab also. And still if any of our Mod. or Admin. wants to open this thread again, he can do the same at his will. Hope after this no such kind of debates should happen on the forum again through which we could loose really some nice friends. Regards.

  5. Why low licence fee for new telcos, CVC asks DoT Economic Times l 2 Oct. 2008 l New Delhi The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has sought an explanation from the department of telecom (DoT) for giving licences to new telecom players at prices that were fixed in 2001. The move is bound to increase the pressure on the DoT, which has been heavily criticised for the recent Swan-Etisalat deal. Swan Telecom, one of the new entrants, paid Rs 1,537 crore for licences in 13 circles earlier this year. Recently, it offloaded a 45% stake in the company to UAE’s Etisalat for $900 million, which valued its licence at Rs 9,000 crore which is six times the licence fee. Asked if the CVC was probing the Swan deal, a top CVC official clarified that the agency was probing the allocation of licences to all new entrants. The official also added that the probe was not linked to the Swan-Etisalat deal. “Even before this deal, we had pointed out several anomalies in the allocation of 2G licences by DoT. We had demanded an explanation and the DoT had replied to our queries. However, we were not satisfied with DoT’s response and had informed the department. We have also sought additional details from them. We are awaiting their response and are probing the issue,” the CVC official said. Sources said the CVC wants the DoT to clarify the rationale behind allotting 2G radio frequencies without auction to the new entrants and dual technology licence holders such as Reliance Communications and the Tatas. Earlier this year, the CVC had also advised the DoT to auction the remaining 2G spectrum, while adding: “The true value of this finite and precious resource needs to be realised.” As per industry estimates, the government has lost about Rs 50,000 crore on account of giving away pan-India telecom licences for a mere Rs 1,651 crore each, a price discovered seven years ago. Swan’s valuation increased six times despite the fact that it had not invested in infrastructure, not launched services in any circles or even acquired a single customer. Following the deal, the DoT has been under pressure to justify why the licences, which comes bundled with startup radio frequencies were not awarded at market prices. The finance ministry had been repeatedly demanding that the DoT auction all 2G spectrums.
  6. Indus to add 24,000 towers 2 Oct, 2008, 0309 hrs IST, ET Bureau MUMBAI: InduS Towers, the world’s largest telecom tower company, will add nearly 24,000 towers to its portfolio during the current fiscal, taking the total count to around one lakh. The three joint venture partners in Indus — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular — will pump in Rs 10,000 - Rs 11,000 crore this finan-cial year for increasing the number of towers, informed sources revealed. Indus currently has around 80,000 towers and the growth has been rapid. The JV had just 60,000 towers when it was announced in December last year. “A large part of these new towers will be set up in rural areas, which will lead to the next wave of wireless growth. Indus is looking at capturing business from new operators which have received spectrum as well as the old players who have been allocated airwaves in new circles. Wider reach and presence will place Indus in an advantageous position vis-a-vis other tower companies,” said sources close to the development. These impending rollouts by players like Unitech, Videcon-promoted Data-com, Loop Telecom, Swan Telecom and Aircel provide significant oppor-tunities for Indus. With the current competitive scenario, they will have to take services of tower companies to reduce capex as well as time-to-market. “Indus is also likely to undertake a major part of passive infrastructure ex-pansion required by Bharti, Vodafone and Idea, giving it ample business,” sources said. While there has been a deluge of tower companies in India, independent as well as arms of operators, it is only the large players which are expected to survive in the long run. That is because they offer wide reach, allowing fast expansion for any operator. Indus is learnt to be attracting interest from most of the existing as well as new telecom players due to its robust portfolio. The company will also list on the bourses in the next two-three years. While the top three GSM operators are the promoters of Indus, none of them has a majority control. The company has been formed by merging the passive infrastructure assets of the three players in 15 of the 22 tele-com circles. Bharti Airtel, through its tower arm Bharti Infratel, has 42% stake in Indus, Vodafone Essar 42% and Idea Cellular has 16%. Bharti Infratel will transfer around 30,000 towers to Indus, but will con-tinue to own and operate the remaining around 23,000 towers in the seven circles outside Indus. Vodafone has transferred its entire portfolio of 30,000 towers to Indus while Idea Cellular has transferred nearly 10,000 towers in 9 circles out of the 13 service areas where it operates.
  7. TRAI to review termination charges Economic Times l 2 Oct 2008 l New Delhi Telecom regulator TRAI has sought data from all telcos in a bid to review the mobile termination charges. After studying the data, Trai will fix the methodology it plans to adopt for revising the termination charges. Telcos have been asked to submit their traffic data by October-end. Any reduction in termination charges will result in lower tariffs for customers. At present, telcos can charge a maximum of 30 paise per minute as termination charges, but these rates were fixed in 2003. Mobile tariffs have fallen by over 50% since then. Termination fee is the charges paid by one operator to another for enabling the calls to move between the networks. For instance, if a Bharti Airtel customer makes call to Vodafone subscriber, Airtel will pay 30 paise per minute to Vodafone as termination charges. “We must determine the methodology for reviewing termination charges —it can be a cost-based model or it can be determined by considering the long-term incremental cost. Unless we analyse the data, we cannot quantify any reduction in termination fee. Even if we issue a consultation process, we must specify the different methodologies,” a Trai source said. The DoT has already asked Trai to cut mobile termination charges.

  14. Meizu M8 Expected to Launch Here in December It’s been a while since the Meizu M8 made the tech scene but it’s back now and with some exciting news too. The M8 is apparently due for a launch sometime in December this year and that’s not the only thing that's got me raving. The fact that the Taiwan-based distribution company is also planning on an official Indian launch is what is making this a big deal. It's not like there’s a shortage of i-Killers, but this just happens to be the closest competitor... or was it the HiPhone? The M8 will make its first official appearance in China and then make its way here. Geek IT, the Taiwanese company has commenced retail operations in India so it’ll be no big deal to bring the phone here. Some of the specs of the M8 include a 3MP camera, media player, integrated FM radio EDGE support and Bluetooth possibly with an A2DP profile. The handset will also be equipped with a 3.2-inch touch screen LCD and run on a version of Windows CE. There’s no word on 3G support. The M8 has gone through a few changes since it first made an appearance, so we’ll have to wait and see what the actual device is going to be like. As of now reports place the launch in the beginning of December and at approximately Rs. 21,000 for an 8 GB model. Courtesy : Tech2
  15. Rothschild wins technical bid to become spectrum auction agency Economic Times l 01 October 2008 l New Delhi The government has zeroed in on Mumbai-based NM Rothschild and Sons as the agency to conduct online auctions for allocating third generation radio frequencies in India, the government said. The technical quotations of eligible bidders were opened Sep 29. "The financial bid of the technical qualified bidder will be opened Oct 3," an official release said. Three companies - mjunction, Rothschild and Sai Information System - had been shortlisted as eligible bidders out of the four to have submitted bids for selection as the agency to oversee the e-auction of spectrum allocation for third generation (3G) and Broadband Wirelesss Access (BWA) services. A state-owned bidder, MSTC Ltd, did not qualify for the technical bids. According to the Department of Telecom (DoT) guidelines, all bidders - both Indian and foreign firms, if any - were required to declare their shareholding patterns. Potential bidders were also barred from having more than 10 percent stake in any telecom or Internet service provider in India. Under the guidelines, only those companies with a paid-up capital of Rs.25 million, a net worth of at least Rs.100 million, and experience in conducting similar auctions were eligible to apply.

  21. Mobile technology taught to turn on thieves 1 Oct, 2008, 0328 hrs IST, ET SAN FRANCISCO: Stolen mobile telephones are being taught to turn against thieves by sending home word of where they are and letting owners snoop on calls. Maverick Mobile won accolades at a recent DEMO gathering of 72 startups in Southern California by debuting software that lets rightful owners track swiped mobile telephones and torment whoever has them. "After losing two mobile devices, one in a London cab and another in a big Indian wedding, I went through a lot of heartburn and stress," Maverick founder Sujit Jain said while introducing Secure Mobile at DEMO. "That gave birth to a product which will not just secure your device but the data as well in case of loss or theft." Maverick Secure Mobile software installs in the hardware of mobile telephones, not in the changeable SIM cards that identify users to telecom service providers. The application runs in an unseen "hidden mode" in mobile telephones, encrypting contact numbers and other data if crooks puts new SIM cards in the handsets. The India-based firm's software also retrieves contact lists from devices and sends new SIM card telephone number and location data to mobile telephones designated by original owners. The application also sends copies of any telephone numbers a thief has called and copies of text messages he or she may send. "And its all sent using their data plan, so the best part is the thief pays for it," Jain said. Owners of stolen devices are given the power to disable stolen mobile telephones or make them play blaring alarms that only stop when the batteries are out. Replacing a battery re-initiates the irritating sound. Secure Mobile was given a "Demogod" award as one of the top launches at the Southern California event. "Tied to the phone rather than the SIM, Maverick locates the phone, pulls contacts into the cloud and lets you pester the thief until he reconsiders a life of crime," DEMO producers wrote in a review posted online. "Plenty of mobile security products will lock down a device that has been lost or stolen. Services will backup mobile data. Maverick Mobile does both and more, and frankly in a way that feeds our desire to revenge the loss of a phone." Yougetitback.com on Monday launched a "Mobile SuperHero" service that lets people track the whereabouts of smart phones using built in GPS capabilities or by figuring out which cellular towers are handling calls. The US company specializes in helping people recover smart phones, laptops, iPods, cameras and other prized mobile electronics. "We believe that allowing people to track the precise location of their mobiles, should they be misplaced, lost or stolen, is added peace of mind for them," said Yougetitback.com chief executive Frank Hannigan. "For example, a user in New York may be surprised to learn that his or her missing device has been transported to Texas or California somehow. The user can lock the phone remotely because Mobile SuperHero has tracked it." Mobile Superhero is an Internet-based application that keeps tracking devices even if SIM cards are changed.
