Revenue break-up: DoT sets up review panel Business Line In view of the objections raised by the telecom regulator, the Department of Telecom is now rethinking its earlier decision to allow operators to separate their revenues from 2G and 3G services for the purpose of calculating the annual spectrum charges. The DoT has set up a committee to look into whether a mechanism to segregate revenues was possible or not. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had told the DoT that such a separation was not possible. In a letter to the DoT, the regulator had said, “Both these services are capable of providing triple play services. Moreover, there will be many common control equipment for 2G and 3G and apportioning the cost to these two services will be a very complex and cumbersome exercise. There is also the apprehension that such bifurcation of the revenue may lead to some service providers paying lower spectrum charges.” The industry is also divided on the issue with CDMA players supporting the views of TRAI. However, the Cellular Operators’ Association of India said that it was possible to segregate revenues and operators in Hong Kong have implemented such a mechanism. Operators currently pay a maximum of 4 per cent of their annual revenues depending on the quantum of the 2G spectrum they use. DoT has said that operators need to pay one per cent on revenues earned from offering 3G services as spectrum charges. This means that an operator like Bharti Airtel, instead of coughing up a total of 5 per cent of their combined revenues from both 2G and 3G services, will have to pay 1 per cent on revenues from 3G services and another 4 per cent on revenues from 2G services separately.

Chinese Mobiles ! ( No Debate) Just A Discussion.
Honest replied to dintis's topic in Other handsets
^^^ My dear Abhish, its model no. is 688 and yes it shows the network on which it receives an incoming call. See, if a call is coming on Cdma then it display 098xxxxxxxx© and if a call is coming on Gsm then it displays 098xxxxxxxx(G). Here © & (G) stands for Cdma and Gsm respectively. ^^^ Yes my dear Kalpak, actually I was referring particularly to these three reputed Chinese brands. ^^^ Dear Mufaddal Sahab thats not justified at all. How can we say that all people have the same mentality. We can't expect all users to spend on Highend mobiles. I had seen even Crorepatis who are using these typical Chinese handsets. Then where is the chance of only those who don't want to spend lot of money will buy chinese handsets. Instead, we should leave this matter to the actual buyer. Customer is King. Let him decide what to buy and what not to buy. Actually the highend branded costly handsets are only useful for those who are Tech Savvy, who can use nearly every feature of the highend mobiles. Purchasing the highend costly mobiles could be a big mistake for those who are not that much tech savvy. See, here in India, their are different people with different needs and different feelings. Some people use their handsets like a toy. They use the handset so rough and tough that every now and then they drop the handsets out of their hands. Now imagine if every time these highends mobiles dropped by them, then every second day we will see them purchasing a new handset at the HOTSPOT. Again I will say that their is no harm in purchasing reputed chinese brands as stated by Kalpak above. -
Handsets looks to be good my dear friend. 1000 mAH battery is also a good feature. But lacking of Camera and external memory is not good at all. Anyways it could be a good branded dual sim handset in the market. Regards.

Do We Need To Support A Monopolistic Technology Like Cdma?
Honest replied to metangp's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
^^^ You are correct my dear Kapil. Actually we should not support any monopolistic technology at all. Although the voice clarity in Cdma is much better then Gsm but their are many other con's under Cdma like we don't have much options for better handsets as they are widely available in Gsm. Spending huge amount on costly handsets to be used with Cdma could be a big mistake now a days. Regards. -
^^^ Congratulations for the purchase of new handset my dear Jiten. Post some reviews about this handset after using the same. Regards.

Thats really a good news my dear Kalpak. Cheers !

Oxigen makes payment transactions on mobile easy 29 Sep, 2008, 0000 hrs IST, ET Driving down the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, you realise that you haven’t recharged the digital smart tag that enables you to zoom past the toll booths. Your only option—stop and pay in cash...right? What if you could whip out your cell phone, push a few buttons and wait as the balance on your smart tag is digitally refilled for the desired amount? You’d probably have a company called Oxigen Services to thank. Oxigen was founded in 2004 by Pramod Saxena, a telecom veteran, who had previously served as CEO of Essar’s telecom business and President of Motorola Asia-Pacific. “I wanted to leverage my telecom expertise to virtualise payment systems for people belonging to the middle and lower income segments,” he reveals. This vision was crystallised when he met an executive from South African telecom company Blue Label Telecoms (then called The Prepaid Company) in 2004. Oxigen Services, a 50:50 Joint Venture, was thus born in New Delhi. “The business model evolved around connectivity through small stores,” Saxena explains. The initial payment platform was provided by Blue Label and later modified by Oxigen to make the software as simple to operate as possible. At the store, a customer pays the store-owner for a particular service–say, mobile balance recharge. The storeowner then uses an Oxigen terminal, Internet-enabled computer or an ATM/cash till wired to an inventory management and billing software. He keys in the customer’s requirements (e.g. a recharge worth Rs 100) using a menu on the screen. The transaction is executed in real time and a voucher for the specified amount printed out. The same process is followed to pay electric or utility bills, DTH services, etc. The first benefit is that payment is instantaneous and so is the billing and retailer commission. This, Saxena feels, could go a long way in a country where buying and selling is still a physical activity, as opposed to online transactions. “Therefore, we need to reach out to people at as many touch points as possible,” he says. Today, Oxigen gateways are available at over 50,000 locations across the country. Saxena elaborates, “Our platform is flexible enough to quickly incorporate new service providers. Because of that, we have rapidly integrated a wide bouquet of services with Oxigen.” In 2006, Citi Venture Capital came in as a private equity partner in Oxigen, and took up a 26% stake. The next year, Oxigen launched MobiBuzz, a downloadable mobile VAS prepaid service that enables users to access various entertainment options and phone tools. These Java applications are sourced from various third parties and put onto one server by Oxigen so that users with even basic GPRS phones can access them, regardless of which operator they subscribe to. In mid 2008, Oxigen also launched OxiCash, a first of its kind ‘mobile wallet’ operated via SMS or WAP on users’ phones, or via the Internet. Money can be transferred to an OxiCash account from a bank account or from an Oxigen outlet. The transaction takes place digitally on a server and the service is bought in real time. OxiCash is designed for payment of utility bills, toll charges and mobile or DTH bills. It has so far garnered 100,000 active wallets and seen transactions worth Rs 15 crore in the last three months. In January 2008, Microsoft picked up 36% in Oxigen as Citi Venture exited the firm. Saxena reveals that Microsoft’s expertise has helped make Oxigen’s user interface more efficient and soon, many Microsoft applications will be integrated with Oxigen’s services. Looking ahead, the $150 million company is continuing to focus on the online payments arena. “We plan to take the number of Oxigen outlets to 2,50,000 in the next two years and also integrate financial services such as insurance payments into the system,” Saxena concludes. -

My dear friends, some of the reputed Chinese handset manufacturers are providing really good handsets with proper IMEI numbers. I don't think that we should stop buying Chinese Handsets just to fulfill the dreams of big players or to fill their pockets with higher revenue. Although if any Chinese handsets being sold as a duplicate of a reputed brand, then its not good at all. We should not buy the duplicates. These big players can't even think to compete with Chinese handsets. They are really affraid of Chinese handsets. I myself is using one the dual sim chinese handsets from the last 6 months without any problems. Functions are really great. Regards. -

Updated : India Witnessing New Dawn Of Mobile Banking !
Honest replied to Honest's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
You may soon use your mobile phone as credit, debit card Economic Times l 28 Sep, 2008 l New Delhi In a development that could completely liberalise mobile commerce, the department of telecommunication (DoT) will soon write to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) seeking guidance on linking telephone networks with banking services. While the RBI recently announced certain guidelines for mobile banking in India, it only provides for a few basic banking services which can be undertaken through mobile phones. The new DoT move will allow consumers to virtually use mobile phone as a debit or credit card. Sources told SundayET that the ministry would seek RBI's consultation to provide full-fledged mobile banking services to the customers, in line with discussion held between the 13th Finance Commission team and DoT officials on September 18, 2008. According to a senior DoT official, the ministry has so far not taken any initiative on linking telephone networks with banking services, but is keen on it as it will generate revenues, in addition to giving more value to telephone customers. "These services can increase the share of value-added services from the existing 7-8% of total revenues from the sector to almost about 25% which is the case in the developed countries," DoT said to the Commission's team. SundayET has a copy of the discussion paper prepared by DoT. Explaining how the new initiative would help Indian consumers, Romal Shetty, director at KPMG India, said it would change the entire face of banking in the country. "So far, consumers can make only a few basic transactions through the mobile, but this will mean using your mobile as your credit or debit card. All you have to do is to send a message to make a payment," he said. Mobile commerce in India has been limited primarily to basic banking transactions, purchase of travel tickets and payment of some utility bills, checking your account balance and last few transactions. Sanjiv Mittal, vice-chairman, Bharti Telesoft, that provides mobile banking facility to the customers in collaboration with Barclays Bank feels that both, banking and telecom industry, will have to come together to make mobile commerce a success in India. "There are certain laws to be considered regarding money remittances. Considering the IT security condition, coming together of both is a good sign," he said. Vodafone also offers services like querying bank balance, requesting for cheque book, making stop payment etc. These services are available in association with banks such as HDFC Bank, ABN AMRO and Kotak Mahindra Bank. "Mobile banking is necessary to create access to the remotest of areas. Any kind of convergence is good for promoting mobile commerce. There is nothing better than both the systems coming together to provide a framework," said a Vodafone official. The DoT's interest in the matter is sending positive signals to industry. "If the ministry takes up the matter with the RBI, it will definitely speed up the process. It will not only help the mobile users but will boost banks and even mobile operators to grow further," added Mr Shetty. The DoT has informed the Finance Commission's team that revenues from auction of spectrum for 3G and BWA services could go up to Rs 30,000 cr. The 13th Finance Commission asked the DoT to give the revenue projection from the telecom sector between 2010 and 2015. -

Honest posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Apple sells unlocked iPhones in Hong Kong Economic Times l 27 Sep, 2008 Apple has started selling unlocked models of its popular iPhone 3G in Hong Kong which allow users the freedom to choose the telecoms provider of their choice. The eight gigabyte version was on sale Saturday at Apple's online store for 5,400 Hong Kong dollars (about 700 US dollars), while the 16 gigabyte model was 6,200 dollars. Apople said the phone can be activated with any wireless carrier," the company's website said. The move is a shift from the US technology firm's previous strategy of tying the phone exclusively to a single mobile operator in each country or territory. The iPhone 3G was previously only officially available in Hong Kong bundled with a two-year contract with tycoon Li Ka-shing's Hutchison Telecom on tarriff plans ranging from 188 to 498 dollars a month. The gadget latest offers a touch screen, high-speed Internet browsing with third generation networks, WiFi, e-mail, GPS and an integrated music and video player. Updated: Htc Dream! Google Selling Unlocked G1 Phones In India !

Google's G1 phone will kill-off the PC, claim its designers Economic Times l 28 Sep, 2008 LONDON: Florian Seiche, HTC (High Tech Computers) chief, the designers of Google's G1 phone, has claimed that with its high-tech features, the new phone could make the personal computer obsolete. Florian Seiche, whose company designed Google's answer to the iPhone, believes the personal computer will soon join the 'dodo'. Seiche insisted that the phone is set to transform the way we think about the internet, and could even kill off the PC. Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin launched the G1 phone amid a frenzy of excitement in New York this week. "This is really big news for the entire mobile world. It is so fast, responsive and easy to navigate that you basically have the same browsing experience you would have on your desktop at home," Telegraph quoted him, as saying. He said that its just a matter of a couple of years that people will look back and remember how "awkward" it was that they could only go online when they were sat down in front of their PC, because "it will just be very natural that you can enjoy the internet wherever you are". The G1 is touted as Google's answer to the iPhone, the image it may easily pull off by taking advantage of Google's wealth of applications that have already transformed the desktop. It offers one-touch access to Google mail, which revolutionised web-based email services. It promises to make watching videos on the Google-owned YouTube a delight. Meanwhile instant-messaging via the Google Talk chat service could mean the end of back-and-forth text messaging. The phone boasts so many "very, very cool and compelling features", including an mp3 player with access to Amazon's music download service, that he believes "many users will find it highly addictive". "That is all available on day one of the platform going live. So you can just imagine within six months, within a year, the vast kind of choices consumers will have about what to turn their mobile device into," said Seiche. And the most revolutionising feature is the phone's operating system which will allow the phone to evolve into the future. -
^^^ Very true my dear Manish, terrorist don't have any Religion. And about the media, just seen Star News today at 11.30pm in which they should have covered about the Delhi blasts, but I was shocked that half of the news covered was for Abhishek Bachhan. Again and again they repeated that Abhishek has cancelled the Delhi trip which was scheduled for the promo of his forthcoming film Drona. It would be much better that if they could have covered the news of Common Man instead. But they were busy to cover the news of Abishek cancelling the Delhi trip. Only God knows where our Media is heading towards now a days. Regards.
