Who Became 'crorepati'? Star Plus, Airtel Told To Shell Out Rs 1 Crore
Honest posted a topic in The Lounge
Who became 'Crorepati'? Star Plus, Airtel told to shell out Rs 1 crore 12 Sep, 2008, 2058 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: A consumer commission has imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on mobile service providers Airtel and entertainment TV channel Star Plus for "unfair trade practice" during the game show "Kaun Banega Crorepati". Headed by Justice M B Shah, the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, said that both companies violated the consumer protection act "in conducting the 'Har Seat Hot Seat' contest, which was a part of the show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', and thereby adopted an unfair trade practice." "Star Plus and the Bharti Airtel Ltd are directed to pay jointly damages of Rs.10 million. They are hereby directed to deposit the said sum of Rs.10 million with the registrar of this commission, who in turn, shall deposit the same to the credit of the Consumer Welfare Fund," Justice Shah observed Thursday. The commission observed that on the basis of the admitted fact that Bharti Airtel received 58 million SMS text messages, it goes without saying that this practice resulted in an increase in their business. Further, normal charge of the 58 million SMSs would have fetched only a maximum of Rs 5.8 crore. As against this, they received Rs 13.92 crore from SMS messages, the commission observed. The participants who sent the answer using Airtel's SMS service, were required to pay Rs 2.40 per message, which was higher than the normal charges. The commission further said: "the excess revenue (Rs 13.92 crore minus Rs 5.8 crore) comes to Rs 8.12 crorer. Out of this, they distributed prizes amounting to Rs 1.04 crore. Still, the surplus revenue comes Rs 7.08 million." The commission praised the Society of Catalysts, a non-government organisation for filing the complaint and thus highlighting the unfair trade practice. -
^^^ My dear friend, just call the customer care and confirm if really your handset does support net connectivity or not. And if it does support then get the manual settings for the same from CC. Regards.

Every village to have public telephone service by 2009-end 13 Sep, 2008, 0036 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: Every village in India is expected to have public telephone service by 2009-end, as state-owned BSNL has started installing public telephones in the remaining 50,000 villages following a go-ahead from DoT. Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has started work on the second phase of the village public telephone scheme, which includes those villages that appeared in Census 2001 and were left out earlier, an official statement said here on Friday. The village public telephone scheme will be provided subsidy support from the Department of Telecom's Universal Service Obligation Fund. Installation of public telephones in all villages is expected to be completed by the end of the next year, it said. The government is implementing a scheme to provide subsidised public telephone facility to 66,822 villages under the Bharat Nirman programme. Out of these, 54,700 villages have already been covered and work in the remaining villages would be completed this year. All villages have been brought under the scheme except those having population of less than 100, those lying in deep forests and those affected with insurgency. About 5,000 remote villages are being provided with the telephone service using satellite technology. BSNL has already provided telephones to 5,50,000 villages across the country. It has extended 11 million GSM connections in the rural areas. Its GSM coverage has reached out to about 2,56,000 villages. That apart, the company covers 75 per cent of the villages through its WLL network. The telecom giant has been providing the high-speed broadband services in 30,500 villages. -

Introducing... The Htc Touch Hd ! Htc Touch Hd Available Unofficially In India !
Honest replied to @ksh@T's topic in HTC
HTC Rocks The Boat With 2 New i-Killers HTC already had an i-Killer in their Touch and the much better HTC Touch Diamond. They even took it one step further with the Touch Pro and its slide out QWERTY keypad. It doesn't seem though like that was enough. Their latest offering is a handset that’s yet to make an official scene in some way, and all we have right now are a few candid images of the same. Reports say that the handset in question, is being referred to as the HTC Touch HD. In case you’re wondering, the HD stands for High Def and the reason it carries that tag is because of the screen resolution that is supposed to support a 480 x 800 pixel resolution. Yup, WVGA. The handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and comes equipped with a Qualcomm 7201A processor (@ 528MHz) with 512MB ROM and256 MB RAM (+32MB on processor). The same reports state that the Touch HD will be equipped with GPS, a 5MP camera with no flash though, microSD card support for extra memory and a 3.5mm earphone socket. According to some of the pics and these reports, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of navigation or scroll pad. Does this mean it’ll be totally touch? We’ll have to wait on that. As of now, it seems this could be one step above the iPhone with no button against the iPhone's singular one. For images click here. The second handset is a refurbished HTC Touch called the Opal, simply because of its more refined and elegant look. It retains a design similar to the original Touch with a 3D interface like the Diamond. It’ll also be running on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The handset will sport a 2.8-inch TFT touch screen with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. It supports EDGE, GPRS and of course Wi-fi, but there's no evidence of 3G support in the specs. The handset will also be equipped with a 2MP camera. There’s no word on the availability of these handsets as they are not featured on the official HTC websites. Thankfully our sources help us keep you updated. Stay Tuned. Courtesy : Tech2 -

Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
Honest replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
DoT amends 3G, WiMax policies 12 Sep, 2008, 0302 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecom (DoT) on Thursday amended the 3G policy to allow successful foreign bidders to acquire Indian operators without waiting for the mandatory three years. Another key change in the policy is that CDMA operators will be allotted 3G spectrum through auction. DoT has also retained an earlier clause that besides the existing licence holders only those telcos with experience in providing 3G services can bid for the spectrum. DoT also amended the broadband wireless access (which includes WiMax services) policy to double the base price for WiMax spectrum to Rs 1,010 crore and allow successful bidders to offer both data and voice services. While announcing that the 3G spectrum for CDMA operators in the 450 MHz and 1,900 MHz bands would be allotted through auction, DoT said the reserve price for such frequencies would be notified separately. The department also shied away from specifying the licence renewal fee for existing telcos. The licences of existing telcos would be extended “in a manner as the government deems fit”, it said. Again, while saying telcos must share 1% of their incremental revenues from 3G services as spectrum usage charges, DoT added that the method of calculating this fee would be spelt out later. ET had first reported all these major changes across different stories over the last 30 days. In the case of Wireless broadband (WiMax) spectrum, the DoT has doubled the base price for the auction of frequencies on this platform. This implies that any player that wants to bid for WiMax spectrum will now have to offer a minimum of Rs 1,010 crore for a pan-India licence compared to Rs 505 crore earlier. Industry sources said that with the doubling of the WiMax spectrum base price, successful bidders, including internet service providers (ISPs), would now be permitted to offer mobile services on this platform. This could not be independently confirmed. But while the old policy said spectrum will be auctioned for “data services”, the amended policy has done away with it. The new BWA policy also adds that radio frequencies in the 700 MHz and 3.3-3.6 GHz frequency bands would be auctioned for WiMax services as and when they become available. The earlier policy said that radio frequencies would be given only in the 2.5 GHz and 2.3 GHz bands for WiMax services. DoT in its new 3G policy has said that the existing merger norms will apply only to existing licence holders. This implies that foreign telcos, which are successful in their 3G bids, can now buy an existing licence holder without having to wait for three years, the lock-in period specified earlier. The larger implication is that foreign telcos who bag 3G licences can now buy out existing operators who hold 2G radio frequencies. They will, therefore, be able to offer both 3G and 2G services. Besides, if a foreign player were to bag 3G spectrum and also buy an existing Indian operator, the telco will not have to pay an additional Rs 1,651 crore for the UASL licence. The government, in its earlier 3G policy announced in August, had decided to allot 3G spectrum in the 800 MHz to the CDMA player with the highest subscriber base, without taking resort to auction as mandated for GSM players. This was on the condition that the CDMA player would have to pay the same price that the highest GSM operator was paying in a particular circle. This gave RCOM, which has the largest subscriber base in all circles, except Delhi and Maharashtra, the right of first refusal (RoFR) for offering 3G services in the 800 MHz band. This band is the most efficient and cost-effective frequency for CDMA players to offer high-end services. The change in the policy implies that other CDMA players such as Tata Teleservices, Shyam, BSNL and MTNL as well as new players now stand a chance to get radio frequencies in the coveted 800 MHz band. -

Tatas to start GSM service in Mumbai 12 Sep, 2008, 0304 hrs IST, ET MUMBAI: Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) and three new operators—Videocon’s Datacom Solutions, Unitech Wireless and Swan Telecom—have received GSM spectrum for offering services in Mumbai. This will heat up competition in the circle, which has the highest average revenue per user per month (ARPU) in the country. Already seven operators are present in the heavily-penetrated market, with Idea Cellular launching operations just last month. The four operators have been allotted 4.4Mhz spectrum each in the 1800 Mhz band. It is currently termed as “trial spectrum” and operators are expected to complete trials within a given timeframe. Of them, TTML is expected to take the least time in rolling out services because it will utilise existing CDMA infrastructure. It’s capex will also be incremental because GSM antennae can be mounted on towers being used for offering CDMA services. TTML provides CDMA mobile and fixedline services under the Indicom brand. “TTML has been allocated trial GSM spectrum and we are required to complete the trials within the next three months. This spectrum allocation, if confirmed, after the trials, will significantly enhance TTML’s bouquet of wireless offerings and further strengthen TTML’s competitive position in the market,” a company spokesperson told. Mumbai, with nearly 15 million subscribers, is the highest-revenue generating market. According to telecom regulator Trai, the blended average revenue per month per user (pre-paid & post-paid) is the highest in Mumbai at Rs 274. The post-paid ARPU is as high as Rs 630. However, wireless penetration in the financial capital is as high as 70%, signalling tough competition for new players. Vodafone Essar is the market leader in Mumbai, with other players being Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, BPL Mobile, Reliance Communications, Tata Indicom (CDMA) and MTNL.

RIM unveils spate of consumer application deals 12 Sep, 2008, 0420 hrs IST, ET TORONTO: A day after announcing a flip-phone version of its popular BlackBerry Pearl, Research In Motion unveiled a spate of consumer-related partnerships, continuing its push to capture mainstream customers. RIM said it would partner with Ticketmaster to let BlackBerry users search, browse and buy tickets to entertainment and sporting events. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company said it was also getting together with TiVo to let BlackBerry users schedule television recordings from their smartphones. Another deal, with Microsoft Corp, will see the software giant's Live Search capabilities integrated into the BlackBerry's browser and maps. And RIM announced a deal with social-networking Web site MySpace to develop a mobile application customized for the BlackBerry. The pact was similar to a deal between RIM and social networking site Facebook announced last year. RIM also unveiled an agreement with Slacker Inc to provide a free radio application for the BlackBerry. The application will let users listen to Slacker's radio stations even when not connected to a wireless network. All the announcements made on Thursday were targeted at developing a market much broader than RIM's mainstay of business executives and other professionals. The company has been seeking to expand its reach among retail consumers in a bid to diversify and spread the appeal of the BlackBerry. The deals also came as CNBC television reported that RIM would launch its high-end BlackBerry Bold handset in the United States in October. The device, aimed at the company's main base of business users, is already available from a number of carriers around the world. -

DoT amends 3G guidelines, prior experience must for new cos 11 Sep, 2008, 1946 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday amended the 3G telecom policy to allow only those having a licence or experience of running such a service to apply for spectrum, while also changing norms for levy of annual spectrum fee. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has said that any person who holds a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) or Cellular Mobile Telecom Service Licence or who has previous experience of running 3G telecom services can bid for spectrum. DoT has already started the process of appointing an agency to conduct auction of spectrum and by September 30, the agency will be in place. For those with experience of running 3G, the new condition mandates that they give an undertaking to obtain UASL as per DoT guidelines. This means that non-licence holders for 3G spectrum would have to pay Rs 1,651 crore as pan-India fee. As far as annual spectrum charges are concerned, DoT has amended the norms and now the companies would have to pay the charges at the rate of one per cent on the "incremental revenue due to 3G services" after a period of one year and the method for this shall be notified separately. Similarly in the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services also, the DoT has amended the guidelines and introduced new frequency band of 2.3 GHz band in addition to the previously notified 2.5 GHz band for spectrum allocation. It also changed the roll out obligations for BWA services and removed the clause of covering specific areas at the end of two years from spectrum allocation date and retained only five years periodicity for fulfilling obligations. -
