  11. BSNL may get navratna call before IPO 9 Sep, 2008, 0226 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: The government may confer navratna status to Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) before the telecom major hits the market with its initial public offer. It would consider a proposal to designate BSNL and Coal India as navratna companies in its upcoming meeting this week. It will also consider the case of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) for the navratna tag. The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has asked these companies to furnish financial details and the number of independent directors on their board. While BSNL has been trying for the navratna status since 2001, Coal India and RINL joined the fray recently. Currently, there are 17 central public sector enterprises which have been granted the navratna tag. The list includes Shipping Corporation of India, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Steel Authority of India and Indian Oil Corporation. “Both BSNL and Coal India have initial public offer (IPO) plans. If these companies have the navratna status before their issues hit the market, they may be able to generate a better response. Both PSEs have earlier applied, so we hope that this time their proposal should be cleared. We’ve also asked RINL to furnish all details,” a DPE official said. BSNL, a mini-ratna, has been pushing for navratna tag on grounds that it has performed better than other CPSEs, while smaller companies like Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) were granted navratna status much earlier. BSNL posted a net profit of Rs 7,805 crore on revenues of Rs 39,715 crore in 2006-07. It also invested Rs 8,142 crore for expansion of its telecom network during the year and plans to raise around Rs 40,000 crore from its public offer. Coal India, which is also a mini-ratna, hopes to further the plans of its foreign venture arm, Coal Videsh. The company posted a net profit of Rs 2,822 crore in the last financial year.
  12. Vodafone-Essar mobile phone dispute deepens 9 Sep, 2008, 1344 hrs IST, ET MUMBAI: Differences between Vodafone and Essar, its Indian partner has reportedly deepened after the former won an order blocking the sale of shares of a mobile phone unit controlled by the Essar Group. According to the London-based Financial Times, an arbitration panel has ordered Essar to freeze the sale of any shares of the mobile unit, BPL Mobile Communications, including those of one of its most important subsidiaries, Loop Telecom. The order has imposed significant constraints on the ability of BPL and Loop to dispose of their assets pending the arbitration outcome. Loop, which holds 21 mobile phone network licences, has been touted for sale at a price tag of up to 2.5 billion dollars. The arbitration order could stop the Loop sale but a person familiar with the issue said Loop could still bring in strategic investment using means other than the direct sale of existing shares. Vodafone's partnership with Essar began last year when it bought a controlling 67 per cent stake in Hutchison Essar, the country's number three mobile operator, from Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison for 11 billion dollars. Essar, controlled by the Ruia family, retained a 33 per cent stake in the joint venture, which was renamed Vodafone Essar, after a period of intense negotiations over the terms and conditions of the partnership with the UK group's former chief executive officer Arun Sarin. As part of the deal, Vodafone inherited a dispute between Hutchison and Essar over the ownership of BPL Mobile Communications, a small mobile phone company with operations in Mumbai and about one million subscribers. Hutchison had agreed to buy the company from Essar more than two years ago for 400 million dollars. The deal ran into trouble after the Indian group claimed its Hong Kong partner had missed a deadline for obtaining regulatory approval for the sale. When the sides could not agree a solution, the dispute moved into arbitration.
  13. RIM the big winner in smartphone market: Gartner 9 Sep, 2008, 0213 hrs IST, ET HELSINKI: Blackberry maker RIM was the biggest winner in a slowing smartphone market in the second quarter, roughly doubling its market share from a year ago to 17.4 percent, research firm Gartner said on Monday. The market was still dominated by Finland's Nokia Oyj , which sold 15.3 million phones with capabilities like e-mail and navigation, giving it a 47.5 percent share. But this was down from 50.8 percent a year ago as competition intensified in the consumer smartphone market. "RIM continued to execute well at the consumer level, increasing its global market reach," Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza said in a statement. Research In Motion Ltd (RIM) sold 5.6 million smartphones in April through June, up from 2.5 million a year ago, as it found new clients beyond its main business market. "In the second half of the year, the company is expected to launch smartphones based on new (designs) ... which are necessary to keep pace with the competition at the consumer level," she said. Gartner said Nokia needs to introduce more design variations among its N-series multimedia phones to stay ahead. The company has only tweaked its N-series lineup so far this year and many analysts expect it to lose more market share in smartphones in coming quarters. Credit Suisse said it expects Nokia's smartphone market share to fall to 41.6 percent in 2009, hurting profit margins. NEW COMPETITION "Longer term, we maintain our concerns regarding smartphone share in the face of new competition from the likes of RIM, Apple and HTC (High Tech Computer)," analyst Kulbinder Garcha at Credit Suisse said in a research note. Gartner said global smartphone sales growth almost halved from the first quarter to 15.7 percent. "The current economic environment continues to negatively impact the market, limiting consumer spending and replacement purchases in general," Cozza said, adding growth should pick up again in July through September. "Wider availability of new touch smartphone models together with the global introduction of the iPhone 3G will help sales of smartphones return to stronger growth in the third quarter of 2008," Cozza said. Apple Inc's share of global smartphone sales fell to 2.8 percent from 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008 as it sold down inventories of first-generation iPhones before the launch of the iPhone 3G. High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) sales more than doubled from a year ago to 1.3 million phones, lifting the company to No. 3 position from seventh place the previous quarter. In smartphone operating systems, Symbian lost market share as the Japanese market declined and Mitsubishi exited the market. Symbian had 57 percent of the market in the second quarter, compared with 66 percent in the same period last year. RIM had 17.4 percent of the market and Microsoft's Windows Mobile market share stood at 12 percent in the quarter.
  14. Unitech mops up Rs 1,200 crore for telecom venture 9 Sep, 2008, 0310 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI : Unitech has raised Rs 1,200 crore for its telecom venture from a syndicate of public sector banks led by Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank. Meanwhile, Norway’s telecom firm Telenor is learnt to have emerged the frontrunner in the race to acquire stake in Unitech Wireless, group’s telecom arm. Unitech is likely to finalise a telecom partner in two weeks. Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra confirmed that the group has raised debt worth Rs 1,200 crore, but declined a comment on telecom partner. SBI Capital Markets organised the loan from the syndicate, which included Bank of India, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Central Bank of India and Vijaya Bank. PNB and Canara Bank contributed the major chunk of the loan. Unitech Wireless plans to use the funds to buy telecom equipment for the first phase of its rollout. Unitech Wireless has already initiated the process to procure equipment from global telecom equipment majors ZTE, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia and Ericsson. The company is also looking at sharing infrastructure of the existing telecom players in the country. Unitech plans to raise a major chunk of initial funds through stake sale. The company is in the process of finalising a European telecom player as its partner. Norway’s Telenor is said to be ahead of its competitors, according to sources close to the development. Unitech has held talks with a number of international telcos since it began its search for a partner earlier this year. The company shortlisted three players, including Telenor, Telecom Italia and an Asian telco two months ago, and is now veering towards Telenor. Sources say talks with Telecom Italia fell through after the two parties failed to bridge the gap over valuation. Unitech is expecting a valuation of $3 billion for its start-up, while Telecom Italia was ready for just a billion dollar. Sources say Unitech is yet to take a final call on Telenor as the two sides are still working on valuation. Another crucial issue, sources say, is the amount of stake being offered to the foreign player. Unitech has all along insisted that it planned to sell no more than 26% stake in its telecom venture, but potential foreign partners have been asking for a majority stake. A source claimed that Unitech may look at selling even 51% stake, but Unitech denied it. Unitech, which has pan-India GSM licence and received spectrum to operate in six service areas, had earlier said that it expected to invest Rs 20,000 crore, including debt and equity, in its telecom business over the next three years.
  15. 3G auction: Global majors to bid just before opening 9 Sep, 2008, 0213 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: With state-owned BSNL all set to open bids for 93 million GSM lines on Wednesday, all network majors have decided to play it safe. Global majors who are in the running, including Nokia Siemens, Motorola, Huawei, Ericsson, ZTE and Alcatel Lucent, are learnt to have told BSNL that they would submit their bids just minutes before the opening time on Wednesday. This is because all vendors want to avoid the possibility of their bids details being leaked out. The last time around, the information about the disqualified bidders, which included Motorola and ZTE, was leaked prior to the opening of the bids. The BSNL deal, which is estimated to be valued at $9-10 billion, is the largest GSM contract globally. “The difference between the rates quoted by the different vendors will be very small. The stakes are so high that nobody wants to take a chance by submitting an early bid. All of them (network majors) have told us that they will submit their bids at the last minute,” a senior BSNL executive told ET. He also added that legally, the companies are allowed to submit their bids up to 30 minutes prior to the opening time. BSNL executives also explained that it would not be possible to determine the winners of the tender on Wednesday (September 10). This is because, for the first time ever, the telco has divided the tender into four components — 2G lines, 3G lines, infrastructure and operating and business support systems (OSS & BSS) with a provision that companies can bid individually for any of the four components, or a single company can also bid for all the components. “We will evaluate the technical feasibility of the bids on Wednesday. The financial component can be evaluated only after the rates are calculated against several parameters. For instance, companies can bid only for the IT part of the tender. Standalone tower companies can also bid. We will therefore have to compute if the cost-benefit ratio of awarding standalone components to smaller players and giving the entire components to established global network vendors,” said a BSNL source. The BSNL contract is split into three parts of 25 million each for the North, South and West Zones and 18 million for the East Zone. The tender conditions also stipulate that one company cannot be awarded more than two zones — this implies that the maximum order than an equipment major can bag is for 50 million lines. This is different from the earlier BSNL tenders where the total contract was divided amongst the two lowest bidders, L1 and L2, in the 60:40 ratio. Besides, here L2 was required to match the price quoted by L1.

  22. Vanu Inc in talks with CDMA players for dual tech solution Business Line New Delhi, Sept. 7 In a bid to capitalise on mobile companies’ move to adopt dual technology, US-based Vanu Inc is in talks with CDMA players including Tata Teleservices to offer a solution that will help the operators to switch to GSM without changing their existing hardware. Vanu’s solution enables operators to move between technologies seamlessly via its software based solution called Anywave Software Radio. Dr Vanu Bose, President and CEO of Vanu Inc, told Business Line, “We expect our first deployment in India by early next year. Pilots and trials are going on with different operators.” Tata invests The company has also received $32 million venture capital investment. Norwest Venture Partners (NVP) led this round of funding, while previous investor Charles River Ventures and Tata Capital participated in the round which will largely support business development, marketing and integration currently underway in India. Vanu is in the process of significantly expanding its presence in India through increased staffing and the signing of strategic partnerships. Vanu’s software-only design runs on commercial off-the-shelf servers, rather than expensive proprietary hardware. In addition, it is the only Radio Access Network (RAN) product to simultaneously support multiple cellular standards on the same platform. Anywave has already been deployed by cellular operators in the US and Canada. Vanu also has a research and development centre in Bangalore. 3G Solution Mr Bose said the company was working on a solution for the third generation (3G) mobile segment. Earlier Vanu and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) had announced their partnership to trial the Vanu Anywave technology as an integral component in wireless access and broadband solutions for the Indian rural communication market. The company had also entered into a strategic alliance with GTL Limited to address the shared active infrastructure services market in India. The solution will allow multiple operators on a shared common network to maintain independence, gain cost benefits and lower cost of entry through a combined wireless infrastructure.

ADAG acquires majority stake in US webcaster 8 Sep, 2008, 0000 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: ADAG company Reliance Big Entertainment has acquired a majority stake in the US-based cricket webcasting portal, Willow TV, for an undisclosed amount.
