  1. BSNL rejects pvt GSM operators allegations 7 Sep, 2008, 1624 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: State-run BSNL in an affidavit before TDSAT has rejected the GSM operators' allegations of government's bias towards it while allotting spectrum and said that COAI plea to drag it as a party in on going legal fest over cross over technology was against the public interest. "BSNL has been validly allocated spectrum as per its eligibility and entitlement. The allegation of any favour to BSNL in this regard is completely baseless incorrect and is specifically denied," BSNL submitted in its four-page affidavit before the telecom tribunal TDSAT. The telecom giant submitted that plea of COAI, the GSM operators' association, to add it as a party in this suit "is completely misconceived, contrary to the public interest and deserving rejection by the orders of this Tribunal". "Private operators have always found themselves placed in a beneficial position in relation to allocation of spectrum to them," BSNL said. Justifying spectrum allotment, BSNL submitted that it has been providing telecommunication services all over the country and in all remote and rural areas. "Where, despite licence conditions, private operators had never discharged their obligations under their respective licences with regard to rural telephony." BSNL submitted that DoT had initially like other operators sanctioned 6.2 MHz spectrum to it. Later, by subsequent allocation DoT allocated further spectrum in the 1800 MHz band for its various circles. "In some of the circles of BSNL, the spectrum is 6.2 MHz. even today. In certain other Circles, BSNL is having a spectrum of 8 MHz, and in certain other circles it is 10 MHz." said the PSU.
  2. 3G auction to begin on Monday 7 Sep, 2008, 1434 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: The government is set to begin here on Monday the process to e-auction radio frequencies for telecom operators to start third-generation (3G) mobile services across the country and fetch the exchequer over Rs.400 billion ($10 billion). The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will hold a pre-bid conference here with all the potential consultants - one of whom would oversee the process to e-auction spectrum for next generation mobile applications, officials said. "The process for selecting the agency to manage the e-auction process will be taken up in the pre-bid conference," a senior DoT official said. The 3G mobile services allow not only much faster communications but also a wide range of applications such as high-speed Internet access, video calls, fast music and video downloads, interactive gaming and global positioning over the Web. As per schedule, potential service providers will have to submit their technical and financial bids by Sep 22. Those who qualify will need to make a presentation before the DoT Sep 24 - the date when the technical bids will also open, officials said. The financial bids of qualified bidders will open Sep 26, and the government hopes to finalise the successful players by Sep 30, the officials added. The state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), which offers its services in Delhi and Mumbai, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) that operates in the rest of the country, have already been allotted frequency spectrum for 3G telephony. The two companies, however, will have to pay the government amounts equal to the highest qualified bidder among the private players. In accordance with the recent decision, an auction will also be held for 3G mobile phone providers who use the CDMA technology platform. The earlier plan was to allocate the scarce frequency spectrum on the basis of higher subscriber base. "The same auctioneer will oversee the e-auction of 3G spectrum for both the CDMA and GSM players," the DoT official said.
  3. DoT may allow spectrum sharing 7 Sep, 2008, 1432 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: In a major development, the government is considering allowing spectrum sharing between two mobile operators, a move that could prove to be a win-win situation for both existing as well as new telecom players. New telecom players may find it difficult to roll out services with only 4.4 MHz of spectrum and compete with existing players who have been allocated 10-12 MHz of scarce spectrum. Spectrum is radio frequency required by cellular operators to offer wireless mobile services. If allowed, two new players may join hands to combine the initial spectrum taking it to 8.8 MHz and this would not only help in reducing the infrastructure costs but also result in better quality of services with less number of subscribers and more spectrum. Minister of State for Communication and IT, Jyotiraditya Scindia, has convened a crucial meeting tomorrow of senior officials in the Department of Telecom (DoT) to consider the proposal of sharing of spectrum among other things. According to sources, the proposal would also help the existing mobile operators who have been seeking additional spectrum with the increase in number of subscribers but are unable to get due to its scarcity. Asked whether DoT may also consider trading in spectrum as allowed in some of the developed countries, sources close to development said since the initial 4.4 MHz of spectrum is given free of cost with the licence, it may not be possible immediately to go for trading. New telecom players like Datacom, Unitech, Shyam-Sistema, Loop Telecom and Swan Telecom have been alloted 4.4 MHz of spectrum in six circles so far and the companies are in the process to roll out network. One of the new operators said that sharing of spectrum, if allowed, will help the player to compete with existing service providers to some extent and asked the government to rationalise termination charges which have not been revised for last many years. Operators charge up to 30 paise for each call terminated on their network, the new operator said, adding the telecom regulator TRAI should have reviewed it long ago to arrive at cost-based termination charge. According to some of the exiting operators also, the termination charge should be less than 10 paise a minute but the existing players have been charging 30 paise, three times the cost based tariff. This would be a major issue for the new telecom players to survive in the market, one of the new telco said, adding along with sharing of spectrum, government must ask TRAI to immediately review termination charge regime and recommend cost based charges.
  4. No issue with DoT on 3G: TRAI chairman 7 Sep, 2008, 1419 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra on Sunday dismissed rumours of differences with the DoT over the 3G issue, saying the role of regulator and power of the Department are well-defined. "When it comes to a certain decision, if we find through detail reading that DoT has overlooked some aspects, then we bring it to their notice through letter. It is up to DoT to heed it or not. We know our responsibility and the power of DoT. We are here to complement them," he said. With regards to 3G, the TRAI Chairman had earlier written to DoT that if new licences are issued to foreign players then as per TRAI Act, DoT has to turn to TRAI for working out the consultation and recommendations before issuing new licences. In the guidelines, DoT had said new 3G bidders will have to pay Rs 1,651 crore to acquire a modified UASL, in addition to the bidding amount, which begins at Rs 2,020 crore. Reading it as a modified UASL licence, Misra wrote to DoT Secretary saying, "If the DoT makes any attempt to amend the UASL or even proposes a new 3G licence, it is obliged by law to seek our recommendations." In its reply, the telecom ministry had earlier last month said, "The UAS licensees are authorized to provide triple play services. 3G service providers are not new category of licensees and they shall be offering 3G services under terms and conditions of UASL. This will include 3G spectrum allocation. After the exchange of series of letters and responses between DoT and TRAI over 3G, Misra said, "Licenses can be issued to new players. There is a new license only if government says that they have to issue new licences. Today there is only one licence Unified Access Service and if an UASL is issued to an auction winner for 3G with the same terms and conditions as has been issued to mobile voice operators in circles, then it is not a new licence." "Government is competent to decide what will be the fee for licence or entry fee. That is not license per se. It is a revenue aspect. Auction of spectrum is not term and condition. It is implicit that certain bands are already mentioned in the UASL licence... and the 3G bands are new for which auction will take place has already been agreed between DoT and TRAI. DoT is competent to take a decision on the matter and it does not have to depend on TRAI. As long these two conditions (auction and issuance of UASL to a 3G winner with same terms and conditions) are there there is no new licence," he said.

"Our partnership with VISA will provide a new opportunity for consumers who aspire to own the 3G iPhone...we are confident that the initiative will further widen the market for the product in India," Bharti Airtel Chief Marketing Officer (Mobile services) Sanjay Gupta said. Spurred by the overwhelming response from subscribers, cellular service provider Vodafone, which is the other licensee had already joined hands with three private banks for a finance scheme to help consumers buy the multimedia device. The three banks, ICICI, Barclays and Axis, would offer two monthly payment schemes of six months and 12 months respectively to Vodafone subscribers. In India, iPhone is priced at Rs 31,000 for 8 GB and Rs 36,100 for 16 GB of memory space.
  6. Eklavya, The Great Yudhistra soon on your iPhone Press Trust of India NEW DELHI: Mobile gaming company Nazara Technologies is in talks with Apple Computers, maker of smartphone iPhone, and its two Indian retailers Airtel and Vodafone Essar to develop a couple of mythology-based games which would be available in the next 4-6 months. "Nazara has set up a dedicated team for 3G and iPhone, and is currently researching on Apple's basic format (Application Programme Interface-API) for development of games for the iPhone. The company would be developing games, and a multiplayer platform to cater to the growing demand. The company would also launch cross platform gaming that integrates with Internet and DTH. 3G games would also be of high quality and would compare in graphics and video with console games.
  7. 100 million mobile subscribers added in a year 7 Sep, 2008, 1617 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: India's wireless subscriber base has witnessed a blistering growth of 54 per cent over the past one year by adding over 100 million new users into the mobile club. As per data available with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), country's mobile users touched 296.08 million in July-end this year against 192.98 million last year in the same month, a year-on-year growth of 53.44 per cent. In July this year, the telecom industry witnessed the highest-ever addition of 9.22 million wireless subscribers taking the total teledensity of the country to 29.08 per cent. India has been adding more than eight million subscribers consistently for more than six months now, and this trend may continue as 700 million more remain to be tapped. Being a low-tariff mobile market, cheap calls have broken the class barrier to accommodate all kinds of subscribers. Call rates today are as low as few paise per minute. Analysts said growth of India's mobile market remains robust as competition among mobile operators continues to intensify. With the mobile penetration level having just exceeded 25 per cent, considerable growth potential still remains, particularly in the massive rural markets. All the mobile operators have started expanding into the rural markets. Their network-infrastructure-sharing initiatives will help speed up network roll-out in the rural and remote areas. The anticipated 3G roll licensing will give another boost to the competition level and help stimulate industry growth. However, wireline or fixed line connections fell by 0.16 million in July 2008, as per the data released by the telecom regulator.
  8. Anil Ambani looks to buy-out Newcastle United: Report 3 Aug 2008, 1617 hrs IST, PTI LONDON: Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications is looking for a possible takeover of Premier League club Newcastle United for an estimated 260 million pounds, a media report said. "Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is in talks with Anil Ambani, the sixth richest man in the world and head of Reliance Communications, India's biggest telecom company," the News of the World reported on Sunday. Newcastle is in the midst of a massive 260-million-pound takeover battle between Asia's two richest companies Reliance Communications and Singapore-based global investment company Profitable Group, it said. "Singapore-based global investment company Profitable Group, which includes former England star Steve McMahon as a director, also want to buy Ashley out," the newspaper added. Mike Ashley is willing to sell the club because of financial reasons. "The Newcastle chief admitted last month he is anxious to find investors to ease the financial burden," the British newspaper said. Both Reliance and Profitable are ready to pay 260 million pounds to own the Magpies outright and are determined to spend more than 100 million pound on transfers to bolster the team, the report added. Billionaire Ashley had bought Newcastle in July, 2007, for 130 million pounds and immediately pumped in another 80 million pounds to wipe out the debts. "Ashley, however, was not able to spend anywhere near as lavishly as most of the Newcastle United players demanded," the report said, adding "he has made it clear he will not sanction the kind of huge signings which might help challenge for a Champions League place".
  9. 'Anil Ambani to make new offer for Newcastle' 7 Sep, 2008, 1615 hrs IST, TIMES NEWS NETWORK & AGENCIES NEW DELHI: Reliance Communications chairman and managing director Anil Ambani may have issued a statement sometimes back that he was not interested in buying English club Newcastle United. But the speculation simply refuses to die. According to the Times, it is becoming increasingly likely that the telecoms giant will seek formal talks with the Premiership club’s board with a view to a £220 million buyout on Monday. Ambani was first linked with the takeover last month but it seemed he was dissuaded by the £260 million tag and the fact that the Tyneside club had failed to strengthen the squad. But following the club’s latest tribulations, the exit of Geordie favourite, manager Kevin Keegan, Reliance believes the time is ripe to make a move. Aware of the vitriol aimed at Newcastle owner Mike Ashley by fans who feel that Keegan is an innocent victim of mismanagement, the Indians are ready to move fast with an offer that more realistically matches their assessment of the club’s value, the Times reports. This could turn out to be a popular move because there are suggestions that Ambani has identified Keegan as the “only credible managerial candidate capable of moving the club forward.” The local media had also reported that Keegan could also be interested in coming back if the buyout takes place. According to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, Kevin Keegan could be back as manager, if Ashley sells out to any of the consortiums who want to buy the club. The writer said he had spoken to Keegan late on Friday and he was "definitely upbeat about his future plans." The paper added that another former England boss, Terry Venables, was a name in the frame to replace Keegan. The Times added that Ambani is ready to hand Keegan, if he returns for a third term as manager at St James Park, “at least £100m to strengthen the squad in the New Year.’’ Keegan had quit the Premier League just eight months into his second spell in charge on Thursday, blasting the management structure which retail tycoon Ashley has put in place stripping the coach of responsibility for matters such as transfer policy. Another Newcastle favourite Alan Shearer, whom Keegan brought 1996, meanwhile says he is not interested in a coaching role at the club under the current set-up.

  16. DoT wakes up to the broadband state NEW DELHI: The department of telecom (DoT) has acknowledged the failure of its broadband policy and is seeking industry inputs to rescript the sector’s growth path. Broadband and Internet is one of the worst performing sectors under the DoT, contrasting sharply with the tremendous success achieved in mobile telephony which is clocking a near 8 to 10 million subscribers every month. The policy collapse is illustrated by the fact that at the end of 2007 India barely reached 10.36 million Internet subscribers against the target of 18 million, while broadband penetration touched 3.13 million against the target of 9 million subscribers. The DoT on Thursday held a meeting with Reliance, Tatas, Bharti, AT&T and Sify to discuss the policy challenges preventing the growth of broadband in India. Mobile phone industry associations COAI and AUSPI were also present. The significance of this discussion is that this is one of the first new initiatives undertaken by a new set of bureaucrats who came into office six months ago. Naresh Ajwani, president consumer, Sify, said, “The government needs to revisit the ecosystem for driving broadband penetration. This includes issues of last mile unbundling, ISP’s viability, cost of access terminals, operational challenges and restrictions faced by ISP’s in the normal course of business.”
  17. Net, broadband fail to catch up with mobile growth 6 Sep, 2008, 1401 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: The debate over Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum auctions and internet telephony comes at a time when global organisations and analysts are painting a contrasting picture of the Indian telecom and IT sectors. Recent International Telecommunication Union (ITU) data reveals that the success of India’s telecom revolution is restricted to mobile voice with very little to showcase in fixed line and internet access, or high-speed broadband. For a country that is the global IT and ITeS capital or the world's back office, its own internet penetration remains one of the lowest in the world. Forecasts are equally uninspiring, projecting high-speed internet access to remain abysmal till 2012. Internet broadband penetration will limp along to eventually reach a measly 3.9 connections for every 100 citizens by 2012. Even though internet users may be multiple times higher, actual broadband penetration will not exceed 18.1 million at the beginning of the next decade. In contrast, mobile telephony will add as many as 350 million subscribers during this five-year period to end at roughly 615 million by mid 2012. These forecasts fall short of the government's conservative target of 20 million high-speed internet subscribers by 2010-end . India's broadband penetration is roughly 4.5 million subscribers. Even with a 300% growth rate over the next five years, the sector will fall short of the 50 million mark by 2012. “The weak numbers can be attributed to a slew of policy failures including inadequacy of fixed line infrastructure, a barely profitable ISP (internet service provider) business, and low domestic PC penetration,” says Rajesh Chharia, president, ISP Association of India. It is learnt that ISPs are actively considering a strong representation to the government on these issues. Weak broadband penetration could severely slow down overall telecom growth, crippling India's ISPs in the process. It will also hurt ambitious government programmes, such as e-governance , e-commerce , telemedicine and e-education all of which are dependent on high-speed broadband internet access. This gloomy environment has prompted telecom regulator Trai to recommend internet telephony for ISPs as it believes this has the potential of becoming the killer application that will kickstart growth. However, the uncertainty of DoT accepting Trai’s recommendations or succumbing to the interests of existing mobile operators to slap an additional entry fee for ISPs is a shadow over the sector. DoT officials have been confusing, vacillating between welcoming Trai’s recommendations and airing level playing field concerns. “A policy overhaul to include concepts like shared PCs, enhanced scope of services and expanding e-governance applications is critical for the growth of the sector,” says Naresh Ajwani, president, Sify.
  18. Dear Akshat thanks for providing the source of information by PM. Now we have opened your thread again. You can carry on discussions and further information about the same now. Regards. Source of the above information : http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/N...how/3449202.cms

  20. 'spice D-88 Gold' Is It Different ?

^^^ My dear Akshat the same had happened with me to with another GSM mobile handset. But that persists only in a paticular location. Whenever I went in that location and try to make or receive any call the phone reboots. I went to the Vodafone Gallery and they replaced the sim and told me that these new sims of 32K sometimes can't take the load of networks and try to access the same in very low network range. They replace the sim and my problem was solved. No rebooting problems after that. Thats why I had told above that this could be the Sim problem also. But at the same time I would like to mention that their could be many other reasons for handset rebooting. So before coming to the conclusion we have to find the exact problem. Regards.
  21. My dear Jayanth, in my opinion you would not have any problems in the future if it works once on your system. And regarding explaining the Compatibility Mode, please note that Microsoft already knows that their could be the issue of drivers for many hardwares in Vista, as the Vista drivers for many hardware manufacturers could not be available with immediate effect. Thats why they had given the option to use the earlier windows version's driver to be used in Vista. Not only Windows XP SP2 but also you can use Windows 2000 or even Windows 98 drivers in compatibility mode with Windows Vista. Regarding other data cards issue which couldn't work with Vista, I can't say more but for your mobile handset you can even try some googling and search. Earlier I was using LG Fwp340E which only have Xp drivers and I used the same on my Vista successfully. Many other members of our beloved forum are using the same using the procedure which I explained above. Regards.
  22. ^^^ Yes my dear Ashok Bhai you are correct, the phone is really great with features like 3G with HSDPA speeds, support for DivX video playback, Dolby sound for music as well as XviD file support and TV out. Regards.
