Vodafone to Sell iPhone 3G for 13K? Now it's clear that Vodafone will ace the iPhone 3G launch in India to Airtel by a few days, making 18th of August the day of the launch. Some more info to come floating out of the rumor mill is that the price of the phone bundled with Vodafone will be around Rs 13,000 for the 8GB model. Our common sense says to believe this rumor only when it's confirmed, because it does seem too low a price for the iPhone 3G bundled with a plan. Courtesy : Tech2 -

Anil may join 'One Laptop Per Child' project 28 Jul 2008, 0100 hrs IST, TOI KOLKATA: Is Anil Ambani planning to tie up with the legendary Nicholas Negroponte, founder of 'One Laptop Per Child' (OLPC), to make laptop ownership a reality for millions of underprivileged children in India for meeting their education needs? Negroponte, along with OLPC India head Satish Jha, are likely to meet the ADAG chairman next week to discuss how OLPC can work together with the Indian corporate giant on extending the coverage of OLPC's work to more states within this country. While the specifics of the likely arrangement are unclear at this stage, OLPC is banking on ADAG's interests in the communications (through Reliance Communications) and IT (through Tech Reliance) segments to work out a partnership that draws on the strengths of both parties. Informal discussions have already been held between OLPC and ADAG in the past. Currently, OLPC - whose mission is to make its 'XO laptop' (a children's machine) widely available to disadvantaged kids in underdeveloped countries - runs a pilot project at Khairat village in Maharashtra where 500 children in the 6-12 age bracket have been provided laptops for individual learning. "We hope to be in most, if not all, Indian states in the course of time," Jha said. OLPC, incidentally, has plans to create an organisational structure in India to support its initiatives. OLPC officials Matt Keller and Manusheel Gupta recently even met Bengal IT minister Debesh Das to examine ways in which OLPC could roll out its programs in state. "We recognise that school education is a state subject and those who need most help are part of that system. We will be glad if the government plans to use XO in its school systems. India's corporate sector can also make a huge difference to bridge this divide and we will appeal to them as well. We have made some progress on each front. However, given the sheer scale of what needs to be done, we have a long way to go," Jha said. OLPC was founded by Negroponte with a core of Media Lab veterans, but quickly expanded to include a wide range of from academia, industry, the arts, business, and the open-source community. Negroponte is currently on leave from MIT, where he was co-founder and director of the MIT Media Laboratory, and the Jerome B Wiesner Professor of Media Technology.

DoT, TRAI clash on licence renewal fee for operators 28 Jul, 2008, 0324 hrs IST, ET Bureau NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecom (DoT) and sector regulator TRAI are at loggerheads again. This time, the issue is about extending the licence tenure of existing service providers. The licences of most operators are set to expire in the next few years. While DoT has proposed that an existing operator should pay Rs 825 crore for a ten-year extension, TRAI has rejected this and wants the licence to be extended without any fee. With the government set to unveil the policy for third-generation (3G) services, the DoT had worked out a formula to calculate the fee that existing 2G telcos will have to pay for extending their licences. The DoT has reasoned that licences of all existing players will have to be extended. This is because following the auction of 3G spectrum, successful bidders — both existing operators and new entrants including international communication majors — will be given these radio frequencies for a period of 20 years. But, the licences of all existing 2G players — which were given in the 90s for a 20-year period — are set to expire over the next couple of years. The DoT feels ‘since the licences of existing operators would expire on different dates before the end of the 20-year period of 3G spectrum allocation, they would not be allowed to use the third generation frequencies for the full tenure’. “To extend a level-playing field amongst the existing operators and the new entrants, it is necessary to have a provision to extend the licence period of winning bidders from amongst existing operators to make it co-terminus with the period of 3G spectrum allocation,” the DoT proposal said. Under this proposal, if a telco needs to extend its licence by 10 years, it would have to pay about Rs 825.5 crore. This fee is calculated as follows: The entry fee of Rs 1,651 crore multiplied by 10 (the number of years for which the licence needs to be extended), and the total is divided by 20 (the number of years for which the telco can use the 3G spectrum). The DoT is of the view the government can garner an additional Rs 3,000 crore by extending the licences of existing players. The DoT had on July 1 sought TrAI’S approval to implement this formula. TRAI, however, feels the ‘renewal of licence should be automatic unless extreme conditions of national security warrant otherwise’. TRAI has told the DoT it should not impose any fee on telcos. In its reply to the DoT last week, TRAI has acknowledged that the ‘government had the powers to impose renewal fees at any time’, but it added any such move would be a violation of the current licencing conditions. “The renewal of licence should not be linked with auction of spectrum for 3G. At present, the government is thinking of auction of spectrum for 3G, while in the future some more spectrum may have to be auctioned for telecom services which would again necessitate extension of some licences, if this practice is followed,” Trai added.

Nokia ties up with WWF 27 Jul, 2008, 1832 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: Mobile handset maker Nokia on Sunday joined hands with World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-India, to support the latter's tiger conservation initiatives in the country. As part of the association, Nokia and wildlife conservation organisation, WWF-India, would work towards providing education to villagers for sustainable development, increasing awareness on tiger conservation, Nokia India VP and Managing Director D Shivakumar said. The joint initiative would also identify alternative livelihood programmes for the villagers around National Parks, specifically the Ranthambore National Park. Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF-India said, "This is an important step in bringing corporate institutional support for conservation, significantly tiger conservation, in India. This is an important beginning at this critical time for conservation in our country." He further added that the tiger population in India has seen an alarming decrease with their habitats shrinking and several threats, including poaching taking a toll on their survival. Nokia would work with WWF to strengthen sustainable and alternative livelihood programmes, to link them with existing schemes of other line departments of the Government of Rajasthan.
