  1. CDMA cries foul over govt decision Press Trust of India / New Delhi July 27, 2008, 16:38 IST The association of CDMA telecom operators, AUSPI, today said the government decision to go ahead with the 3G policy without deciding on the spectrum band for them is likely to benefit the rival GSM service providers. AUSPI Secretary General S C Khanna said in a statement that the 3G policy under which spectrum would be made available by auction only in 2.1 GHZ band which is suitable only for GSM operators. The CDMA operators do not have network equipment to operate in in 2.1 GHz and handsets. "If 3G policy is announced without providing 3G path for CDMA operators, it is going to benefit only the established GSM operators and create serious level playing field disturbances," he said. The equipment and handsets for operating in the band are unlikely to be available for a couple of years at affordable prices. This means the established GSM operators who are able to get 3G spectrum would have a two-year lead time over CDMA operators creating consciously level playing field imbalances, Khanna said. The Department of Telecom (DoT) in its 3G policy announced in November 2007 had accepted the specific TRAI recommendations for for 3G services by CDMA operators and said that two carriers in 800 MHz band would be reserved for CDMA operators. AUSPI has made a presentation to DoT to take into account the requirements of CDMA operators before announcing the 3G Policy, otherwise 80 million CDMA subscribers would be deprived of the benefit of 3G services.

  4. ^^^ My dear Kumaar, I too used Vodafone GPRS in Mumbai, but the condition here is just opposite. The speed of Vodafone GPRS was just magnificent. Even I don't have Edge in my mobile, then also the speed was really good. The proof is Rimweb itself. I posted regularly on Rimweb during my 3 months GPRS usage. Even I uploaded most of my MP3 Ringtones in my thread "Golden Oldies" using only my Vodafone GPRS without Edge. If, I compare Reliance Netconnect to Vodafone GPRS, then Vodafone is above Reliance atleast at my place. May be Vodafone not providing good GPRS speeds in Chennai or their could be any technical issues with them their. Regards.

  12. Serial blasts in Ahmedabad 26 Jul 2008, 1903 hrs IST, TOI AHMEDABAD: Terror struck Gujarat when 17 serial blasts ripped across the city on Saturday evening leaving 15 killed and 30 injured sending a wave of panic. The synchronised explosions in the space of 90 minutes in the eastern and western areas after the first blast hit Maninagar at 6.45 pm occurred in 13 places. There were two blasts each in Maninagar--the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi--and in Sarkej targeting a state transport CNG bus and Sangam theatre. Significantly two hospitals were also the target of attack. An NSG team has been rushed to Ahmedabad. The low-intensity explosions occurred at eight areas of Maninagar, Isanpur, Narol circle, Bapunagar, Hatkeshwar and Sarangpur bridge, Sarkej and Odhav and created a wave of panic. There were two blasts in Maninagar and the first blast occurred in this area at 6.45 PM. The second blast here occurred near LG hospital. Maninagar is the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The Ahmedabad blasts came a day after the multiple explosions in Bangalore in which two persons were killed. The mobile network in the area has completely collapsed. Police said at least two had died and 25 injured, some of them seriously, in the blasts. The injured have been rushed to civil hospital and LG hospital. Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in New Delhi there were eight blasts. Unconfirmed reports said there were 13 blasts. The explosion in the sensitive Sarkej area occurred in a CNG bus. Some of the bombs were believed to have been placed in cycles eerily similar to the Jaipur blasts on May 13 in which 65 persons died. A couple of bombs were reported to have been placed in tiffin boxes in a modus operandi similar to the explosions outside a Lucknow court last year. President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the blasts and appealed for calm. Mangled remains of a bus, cycles, motorcycles and auto along with splattered blood was all that was left after nearly a dozen serial bomb blasts ripped through the city of Ahmedabad. Complete panic spread as people ran for their lives almost leading to a stampede in the areas where the blasts occurred. One body lay on the road waiting for quick removal by police who had descended on the scene trying to keep away curious onlookers and vehicles. What lay right in the middle of one of the roads was a state government CNG bus ripped through from the middle as one of the blast had taken place in it. The outer body of the bus was completely shattered even as surprisingly most of the seats remained intact including the CNG tank. Blood was seen splattered inside the bus and near the foot board. Muslims along with Hindus could be seen rushing injured persons to the ambulances. The scene outside civil hospital was just short of a riot with people thronging the hospital even as ambulances with sirens were seen driving right between them. "There is heavy traffic jams in areas around Mani Nagar, the CM's constituency where one of the blasts took place Number of ambulances are also seen zipping around," said Udit, a city resident. Forensic personnel could be seen scurrying through the blasts scenes even as policemen tried to maintain a cordon.
  13. Samsung Labs Working On Next-Gen Phones? Ever since the release of full touch screen phone - Omnia - news hounds have been watching Samsung's upcoming mobile handsets. Samsung has already included contemporary 'cool' features in their mobile phones like touchscreen, scroll-bar joystick, touch pads, optical joysticks, etc. Unwired News snooped in the US Patents and Trademark Office's website which listed patents filed for four new mobile phones by Samsung Labs. The first patent talks about Samsung's patent claims on a multi-rotating slider 'mobile phone' that closely resembles Sony Ericsson's rumoured PSP phone patents. Back in June 2007, rumors of Sony Ericsson filing a patent on PSP phone did the rounds. In March, yet another rumor cropped up on Unwired News reported another iPhone-like patent by Sony Ericsson. As visible in the photo, the multi-rotating slider handset has two keypads located differently. The twistable and slider-like handset also shows possibilities of gaming on it. Another Samsung patent is regarding a portable phone that looks like a normal phone but has a flexible display. The phone is like a compass which could be unfolded to get a wider display screen, turning it into a small tablet. Filed as a portable communication device, this handset design falls in the Mobile Internet Device segment. Read the patent claims for more details. One of the handset designs includes a dual-touch screen clamshell model. The design shows a normal touch screen and the function's display is also touch screen. So the functions like keypad, scroll keys, menu buttons, etc. are displayed on the secondary touch screen. Another phone design similar to the dual-touchscreen clamshell model draws inspiration from Art Lebedev's famous keyboard - Optimus Maximus - and has OLED displays for the keys. The diagrams of all these handsets sure look uber-cool. While these patents are based on their lab developments, the actual implications are feasible and could turn out to be unique products. We'll just have to wait and watch. Courtesy : Techtree

  17. Low-tariff play helps Bharti Airtel 25 Jul, 2008, 0032 hrs IST, ET Bureau The game of reducing tariffs seems to have worked in favour of Bharti Airtel, the largest mobile operator in the country. Though it reported a 2% drop in average revenue per user (ARPU) during the June 2008 quarter, the higher minutes of usage more than compensated this fall. This helped Bharti maintain its growth momentum in topline, which was well above the expectation. Despite impressive numbers, Bharti’s scrip witnessed a selling pressure in a weak market on Thursday. On BSE, the stock declined 2.2% compared to a 1.1% fall in the Sensex. The demerger of the company’s infrastructure business was reflected in the contracted operating margin during the first quarter. This is because post-demerger, the company has to pay tower-related cost to new companies, including Bharti Infratel and Indus Tower. Apart from this, higher fuel and power costs pushed network expenses further. This led to a two-fold jump in the company’s network operating expenses compared with the same quarter last year. As a result, operating margin of its mobile business shrank by 500 basis points. However, this was partly compensated by the slower growth in depreciation. With the demerger of tower business, the fixed assets got reduced from Bharti’s balance sheet, and hence, lower depreciation. The combined effect resulted in a growth in operating profit, which was in line with a 44% growth in topline (in US GAAP). The company seems to be well on track of its diversification plan - both geographically and the business segment-wise. The management claims that the direct-to-home (DTH) operation will be launched by year-end. Similarly, the company’s Sri Lankan project is well on schedule. This keeps hopes alive for the company to show robust growth in the coming quarters.
  18. 7 blasts rock Bangalore; two killed, 20 wounded 25 Jul 2008, 1441 hrs IST, TOI BANGALORE: According to early reports, at least two people have been killed and 20 people wounded in a series of blasts in Bangalore. Seven blasts have been reported so far. According to Bangalore Police Commissioner, Shanker Bidri, seven blasts rocked Bangalore. The police have confirmed that low intensity crude bombs were triggered by a timer. The blasts took place at the Madivala bus stop, Hossur road, Adugudi, Koramangla, Mysore Road and Nayadahalli. The blasts happened within a span of 12 minutes. Bomb disposal squads have reached the blasts sites. Schools, colleges, cinema halls and commercial complexes have been shut down. According to IB sources, SIMI and LeT may be behind the Bangalore blasts and they could be retaliatory in nature. The injured have been admitted to the St Johns Hospital in Bangalore. More details are awaited.

  23. Samsung Launches 8MP Camera Phone i8510 INNOV8 It’s official! Samsung's 8 megapixel camera phone that we saw floating around earlier this month, has been officially announced, say reports. This quad-band GSM handset called the i8510 INNOV8, as in ‘Innovate’, runs on a Symbian S60 smartphone OS (3rd edition Feature Pack 2). The i8510 is equipped with a 2.8-inch QVGA display that supports 16 million colors and a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and an accelerometer for automatically adjusting the screen orientation. It comes with a whopping 16 GB and 8 GB of onboard memory so space is not going to be an issue. It will also support external memory via microSD. Other features also include TV out, DivX playback, FM radio with RDS and it's also DLNA compatible. The handset will also be equipped with 128MB of RAM and a 3D graphics accelerator so gaming should be a real ‘blast’. This monster is a fully equipped device featuring inbuilt GPS (A-GPS support also) capabilities, Wi-fi, Bluetooth with A2DP and of course USB 2.0 connectivity as well as 3G with HSDPA support. The i8510 also comes with a geotagging feature for the 8MP auto focus camera that also has an LED flash (WHAT?!!! No xenon???). The camera also has other features like face and smile recognition and an auto panorama mode. Media capabilities include stereo speakers, 3D surround sound effect and DNSe 2.0. Thankfully the i8510 has a standard 3.5mm audio jack and not one of Samsung’s multi utility proprietary ports. The handset will hit Europe first and should be priced at approximately Rs. 51,000 (780 Euro). Courtesy : Tech2

  25. Dhoot offers peace deal to Nahata 25 Jul, 2008, 0240 hrs IST, ET Bureau MUMBAI: Mahendra Nahata and the Dhoots, warring partners in Videcon’s telecom arm Datacom Solutions, are engaged in talks intended to save the venture that is set to begin network rollout next month. Sources told ET that Videocon group chairman Venugopal Dhoot met Mr Nahata and assured him that key decisions in Datacom, including deciding on a joint venture partner, will be implemented only after a go-ahead from him. They also discussed a host of issues, including the shareholders’ agreement. The Dhoots are learnt to have proposed talks amid concerns that a legal battle could upset Videocon’s attempts to raise resources by selling a stake to a foreign entity and delay the start of its network rollout, slated for August 15 in Chennai. When contacted, Mr Dhoot told ET, “We are trying to resolve the misunderstandings between us and go ahead with the planned roll-out of our services. We are also standing by our commitment to invest Rs 1,000 crore in the business.” However, Mr Nahata said as yet, only certain proposals had come up for discussion. “Nothing has been finalised as yet,” he told ET. Sources said Mr Nahata has adopted a tough stand to ensure that his rights in the company are respected by Videocon and he may insist on inserting additional clauses into a re-wired agreement. Jumbo Techno Services, owned by the Nahata family, has a 36 per cent stake in Datacom while the rest is with Dhoots. “Management issues between the two nominated representatives of both parties had snow-balled into a misunderstanding between the two promoters,” a source said. Mr Nahata and his representatives in Datacom had claimed that they were being kept in the dark about key company decisions and had even contemplated taking the Dhoots to the courts over the issue. Pre-empting a legal move by Mr Nahata, Videocon had also filed caveats in major High Courts against any judicial order before a hearing on the issue. Videocon is currently in talks with a couple of global telecommunications majors, including Dubai-based Etisalat, Kuwait’s Zain and France Telecom, besides others for offloading stake in the company. The new entrant in the crowded telecom space has also invited bids for telecom equipment worth $5-$7 billion crore for installing 70 million lines. The Dhoots are in a hurry to roll out their telecom venture as early as possible to grab subscribers in the market adding over 8 million subscribers every month. The Dhoot brothers have been wanting a foothold in the world’s fastest-growing telecom market and applied for spectrum in September last year. However, their application reached the department of telecom after the due date for new licences. So they bought 64% in Nahata’s company, Jumbo, through Videocon. All was well between the partners until Jumbo promoters claimed that decisions were taken at Datacom without consulting them and “against the interests of the company”.
