^^^ @Vijay MY dear friend, A-drive link is little bit slow as compared to Rapidshare. But here users don't have to provide any kind of passwords or cat identification etc. That makes a difference. And I found A-drive the best option after Rapidshare. Thats why I uploaded all my Video Caller Tunes on A-Drive. Their are many other free servers also available to upload files, but they are not as secure as Rapidshare or A-drive. Regards. -
Worldwide Mobile Sales See 13.6% Rise Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached 294.3 million units in the first quarter of 2008, a 13.6 percent increase over the first quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. In the first quarter of 2008, 114.4 million mobile devices were sold in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. This represents a 26.6 percent increase over the first quarter of 2007. India remained a high-growth market, and South Korea became a high-growth market as well during this quarter, as consumers upgraded their handsets before new extended contracts are put in place by operators in the second quarter of 2008. The growth in the APAC region was driven by several factors, including a high number of new subscribers, lower-priced phones based on wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) technology, low-cost global system for mobile communications (GSM) phones, and ultra-low-cost CDMA devices, according to Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst (Mobile Terminals) at Gartner Mumbai. Meanwhile, sales in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa reached 56.4 million units, representing a 25.8 percent increase year-on-year. Whereas in Japan, mobile sales numbered 13.2 million units in the first quarter of 2008, a decrease of 10.1 percent year-on-year. The same with Western Europe where sales totalled 35.9 million units in the first quarter of 2008, a decrease of 16.4 percent from the first quarter of 2007. There were no new phone features in the first quarter of 2008 strong enough to drive growth unlike the first quarter of the previous year wherein having a music player function or an embedded integrated services digital broadcasting terrestrial (ISDB-T) tuner was reason enough for users to replace their mobile devices, according to Nahoko Mitsuyama, principal analyst (Mobile Communications Research) of Gartner. As regards mobile phone manufacturers, Finland-based Nokia retained top slot with selling 115.2 million mobile phones followed by Samsung (number 2) with 42.4 million units, Motorola (number 3) with 29.9 million units, LG (number 4) with 23.6 million units, Sony Ericsson (number 5) with 22.1 million units, and others with 61.1 million units. Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
Honest replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
DoT's 3G global bid hits snag 30 May, 2008, 0209 hrs IST, TNN NEW DELHI: The department of telecom’s (DoT) plan to carry out certain amendments to the Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) to allow foreign firms that do not have a presence in India participate in the 3G auctions has hit another roadblock. TRAI chairman Nripendra Misra has shot off a letter to the DoT warning the government that as per the TRAI Act, the recommendations of the regulator should be sought before the DoT can make any amendments to the UASL licence. Mr Misra’s communication also adds that if the DoT failed to follow this protocol, it could lead to legal complications. The TRAI chairman in his letter to the DoT has also enclosed a copy of the regulator’s revised recommendations of 3G auctions, where it has reiterated that foreign players and new domestic players should not be allowed to bid. The DoT has planned to make changes in the licence conditions to bypass TRAI’s recommendations and allow foreign players to bid for 3G spectrum. The regulator and the DoT has been involved in a standoff over allowing foreign players to participate in 3G auctions. So far, DoT has been unable to bring out the 3G policy due to its differences with TRAI. While DoT and finance ministry want new players—including foreign companies—to participate in 3G auctions, TRAI is opposed to the move. Despite DoT asking TRAI to reconsider its stand against allowing international majors, the regulator has refused to budge. ‘The auction for 3G licenses should be restricted to existing operators because they have already made huge investments in infrastructure and will be better placed to deliver 3G services efficiently at low incremental cost,” the regulator had argued. Going a step further, TRAI chairman Nripendra Misra has written to the finance ministry to drop its demand for a global auction. Meanwhile, communications minister A Raja who met finance minister P Chidambaram on this issue on Wednesday has said that there was ‘broad consensus between both ministries on 3G’, implying that foreign players would be allowed. “There is a broad consensus on issues concerning 3G telephony But the final decision will be taken after another round of meeting with the Finance Minister,” Mr Raja had told reporters on Wednesday. Last week too, Mr Raja had said that foreign players would be allowed to bid: “If there is common auction or open auction, there will be no bar (on foreign players)”. Mr Raja also added that he and Mr Chidambaram would meet the Prime Minister to take his guidance on the issue before announcing the policy guidelines for both 3G and WiMAX. As reported earlier by ET, the DoT has referred the matter to the Attorney General of India (AG). In a bid to avoid legal complications, the DoT wants the AG to clarify whether foreign companies who do not hold telecom licenses in India can be permitted to place their bids during the 3G spectrum auction. -

Spectrum allocation norms don't match world standards: Arun Sarin 30 May, 2008, 2123 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: British telecom giant Vodafone has said that norms followed by India in allocating scarce spectrum did not match world standards and actually appear "unusual." "The way the spectrum (radio frequency) has been allocated is slightly unusual by world standards," Vodafone's outgoing CEO Arun Sarin told a news channel. The government has issued as many as 120 new licenses in the mobile telephony space and has also started allocating start-up spectrum to new players. "We have been given some spectrum and others too have been given. But the fact is that we need more spectrum and whether we get it from government or from the new players who have been given licensees is to be seen," he said. To a query that what could be the reason for him to announce his retirement at this juncture, Sarin said it was a matter of his tenure coming to an end. He did not respond to whether he was joining any other company after two months. India-born Sarin, 53, who was only in April named the most influential businessperson in British technology and telecom space for overcoming shareholder dissent and making Vodafone the largest mobile service provider, has led the company for about five years. Sarin, who would step down as CEO on July 29 after the annual general meeting, has been associated with a number of strategic initiatives taken by the company. The last that involved a significant size being the multi-billion dollar buy last year of Hutchison Essar, then India's fourth-largest mobile operator. He said the Indian government will have to make more spectrum available if it has to achieve its teledensity targets of 500-700 million subscribers in next 5 to 7 years. Vodafone (erstwhile Hutch-Essar) is the third largest mobile operator in India.

Talks between RIM, DoT to continue to address security issue 30 May, 2008, 1806 hrs IST, AGENCIES NEW DELHI: BlackBerry maker Research-In- Motion today said it is confident of an amicable solution to current stand-off between the company and the Department of Telecom shortly and assured its customers of an uninterrupted service. RIM executives met DoT officials on Thursday to address the security concerns raised by DoT over inaccessibility of the data encryption keys. Intelligence agencies have said the services offered by RIM posed a risk as e-mails sent between BlackBerry smartphone could not be traced or intercepted and the government has written to RIM asking it to set up servers in India. "The talks that were held yesterday were positive and they are likely to continue for some more time," a RIM spokesperson told PTI. The government has held a series of meetings with RIM, and Telecom Minister A Raja has already said the Canadian firm had assured of providing a solution in two months. But later the Canadian company in a customer update said it does not have a copy of the customer's encryption key and would "simply be unable to accommodate" any such request. RIM, which has 1,14,000 BlackBerry subscribers in India, has maintained it operates in 135 countries and uses a security architecture that has been scrutinised over the last nine years and has been accepted by security-conscious corporations and governments around the world. "RIM does not possess a 'master key', nor does any 'back door' exist in the system that would allow RIM or any third party to gain unauthorised access to the key or corporate data," it said in the statement to customers. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar and BPL Mobile offer BlackBerry services in India. -

Using Qualcomm's QPoint and gpsOne solutions, this service will allow developers create precise, reliable, and compelling location-based applications. Tata plans on offering both consumer and enterprise LBS (location based service) applications. Consumer navigation will include friend finder and social networking applications, while enterprise customers will largely benefit from asset- and fleet- tracking applications. Apart from announcing the new service, Tata Teleservices also launched two special tariff vouchers; Power Plus and Platinum Plan. These vouchers will allow users enjoy reduced STD and roaming rates by up to 40 percent, while rates of incoming calls and local calls made to any number while on roaming will be Re 1 per minute. Tatas may merge tower arm with QTIL 30 May, 2008, 0158 hrs IST, TNN MUMBAI: Tata Teleservices is learnt to be in talks with Srei group company Quippo Telecom Infrastructure (QTIL) to merge its tower arm, Wireless Tata Telecom Infrastructure. QTIL has emerged as the top bidder for a 49% stake in TTSL’s tower business. However, as QTIL is an independent tower firm, it can’t compete with WTTL, in which it will have a 49% stake. “The two sides are evaluating the possibilities of a merger. Tatas will own equity in the merged entity,” sources told ET. “Bankers will be appointed in the next few days to work out the modalities,” sources added. Lehman Brothers and Citigroup, which were advising Tatas on stake sale in WTTL, are likely to be given the mandate for merger. With close to 5,000 towers in its portfolio, QTIL is valued at Rs 3,000 crore. According to analysts, WTTL, which has over 10,000 towers under its belt, has an enterprise valuation of over $3.5 billion. The merged entity will command a valuation of around $ 4.5 billion, an analyst told ET. A TTSL spokesperson said, “We are in discussion with several players for offloading a minority stake in our tower business and cannot comment any further on speculative queries.” QTIL CEO Probal Ghosal declined to comment. The telecom tower sector is seeing fast-paced consolidation. Market leader Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular have floated a JV company Indus Towers. With 70,000 towers, it’s the largest tower firm in the world. GTL Infrastructure (GIL), a subsidiary of telecom network provider GTL, is also in talks to merge with Essar Group’s tower firm Essar Telecom Infrastructure. “Consolidation gives benefits of scale. To offer compelling tower sharing composition to customers (operators), tower companies will need to have a large portfolio of shareable towers and vast reach,” said Angel Broking analyst (IT & telecom) Harit Shah. QTIL, said to be the first independent tower company in India, is one of the most aggressive players in the space. Earlier this year, it lapped up all the 875 towers of Spice Telecommunications across Punjab and Karnataka for nearly Rs 600 crore. It has earmarked $3 billion for organic as well as inorganic growth during the current financial year. For the past over one month, QTIL and Gurgaon-based independent Mobile Infrastructure (IMIL) had been negotiating the deal for 49% stake in WTTL. As reported by ET on April 19, these two were the only players left out of the 30 entities that had originally expressed interest in buying into WTTL. After multiple rounds of presentations and discussions, the Tatas zeroed in on Quippo given the company’s experience in the sector, sources said. QTIL, owned 77.55% by Quippo Infrastructure Equipment, is targeting to have 25,000 towers by 2011. To achieve this, it has already tied up funds to the tune of $200 million. IMIL was founded in 2006 by Jide J Zeitlin, a former partner at the Goldman Sachs Group. He is also the founder of the PE firm Keffi Group, which is the parent of IMIL. TTSL’s listed subsidiary, Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra), has also received shareholders’ nod for hiving off its 3,500 towers into a separate subsidiary. Hiving off telecom towers into a separate company and monetising them has become a trend in the industry, with all the leading players doing so. Last week, Idea monetised 20% of its holding in Indus Towers.

Reliance Communications Starts Exclusive Discussions With Mtn
Honest replied to @ksh@T's topic in Reliance Communications
RCOM, MTN try to stitch complex deal 30 May, 2008, 0540 hrs IST, TNN MUMBAI: Reliance Communications (RCOM) may present its Indian minority shareholders the option of swapping their shares with MTN at the same rate as its promoters, the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). The minority shareholders, will of course, have the conventional option of encashing their holding in RCOM by participating in the open offer, which may be launched by the South African telco MTN. This is one of the possibilities RCOM is weighing as it tries to strike a deal with MTN which, if successful, will create an entity with a combined market capitalisation of $66 billion with a presence in 23 countries. This is in line with RBI norms, which allow a spending of $50,000 by an individual in foreign markets a year. The Indian minority shareholders hold 23% in RCOM while foreign investors control 11% stake. ADAG holds 66% equity in the country’s second-largest private wireless telephone company. Sources close to the development said a clearer picture of the deal has emerged in the past four days after the parties engaged in hectic parleys. MTN, sources said, would sign an agreement to buy up to 74% in RCOM, the maximum permissible limit for foreign equity holding in an Indian telecom company. The proposed transaction involves two steps. The first step would be a mandatory open offer for 20% for the minority shareholders. In the next stage, depending on the response to the open offer, Mr Ambani will swap his shares in RCOM for MTN shares, enabling the latter to reach 74%. This can be better explained with an example. Consider two extreme cases — one where the entire lot of foreign investors of RCOM (11%) opts for the MTN open offer and two, when they stay away from it but the offer receives subscription from Indian minority shareholders. In the first case, MTN’s holding in RCOM, post the open offer, will be 11% and therefore, Mr Ambani will need to swap 63% of his RCOM stake in MTN shares to enable the latter to reach the 74% FDI limit. The second scenario would help MTN end up with 20% stake, post the offer, while the existing foreign investors would continue to hold 11%. In this case, Mr Ambani would exchange his 43% stake in RCOM to get MTN shares. If there is no response to the open offer, Mr Ambani would also swap a 63% stake in RCOM to enable the latter reach 74%. In other words, MTN would end up getting anything between 63% and 74% of RCOM equity, including the open offer, and Mr Ambani would give away anything between 43% and 63% stake in RCOM to get MTN shares. Depending on the share-swap ratio, Mr Ambani is expected to pick up a 28-34% stake in MTN. But he would be by far the single-largest shareholder in MTN. He would not cross the 35% mark as the Johannesburg rules demand an open offer beyond this figure. Newshelf 664 is the largest shareholder of MTN with a 13.1% stake. The Beirut-based Mikati family holds 10.2% while PIC has a 9.7% stake. The rest 67.1% is widely held. Post deal, the holding of these shareholders will come down as the equity capital of MTN will expand on account of issuance of new shares to RCOM shareholders and ADAG. Some people feel that the share-swap option may not elicit a good response from Indian minority shareholders. “It is difficult to expect many takers for the share-swap offer. And frankly speaking, there is no reason that a minority shareholder should be attracted to trade on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange where MTN is listed,” said a banker. Some others, however, believe that the option may lure some investors. “Minority shareholders have invested in RCOM because they believe in the company’s promoters. Now one does not know whether they would like to tag along with the promoters to Johannesburg as well,” said an analyst. However, those who are not interested in the share swap would have the liberty to sell their shares in the MTN open offer. MTN will issue fresh shares to those who want to swap their holding in RCOM, including Mr Ambani. As reported in ET earlier, the broad contours of the deal thus indicate that Mr Ambani will emerge as the largest shareholder of MTN and RCOM will be its subsidiary. While the RCOM side is being led by Mr Ambani himself, his trusted lieutenant Amitabh Jhunjhunwala and Lazard officials took part in the negotiation as well. Lazard is RCOM’s advisor while MTN is being advised by Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank. A formal due diligence is expected to begin within a couple of days. Now, both parties are trying to reach an agreement on the management control of MTN and RCOM. The agreement so far is that the companies will retain their existing management where they are strong. For instance, MTN’s African operations will run the existing management as RCOM does not have any business experience there. By the same logic, MTN will not interfere in RCOM’s operations in India. The apex management committee is expected to be comprised of equal representatives of both parties. The discussions are also focused on how ADAG will retain its majority control in MTN, in case of a future takeover threat by a third party. A source said MTN has a built-in cushion as local laws require at least 26% shareholding by black investors. Mr Ambani may scale up his holding by crossing the 35% mark, which will demand him to launch an open offer. Share prices of MTN are quoted around rand 165. The RCOM stock on Thursday closed 3.9% higher at Rs 573.20 on BSE. It rose more than 6% after a Macquarie research report said the deal was positive and it expected a rebound in the stock. The stock went up as much as 6.5% to 587.70, taking it to its highest since last Friday, the last day of trading before the news about a possible tie-up with MTN emerged. The Macquarie report said a share swap between ADAG and MTN was “positive for RCOM due to the ramp-up in non-wireless businesses and we expect the sale of shares to MTN to be at a premium to RCOM’s current price.” -

Updated : Blackberry Blackout By Indian Govt? Tata Tele's Application Rejected !
Honest replied to Honest's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Open code or shut shop, DoT tells RIM 30 May, 2008, 0206 hrs IST, TNN NEW DELHI: The department of telecom (DoT) is learnt to have issued an ultimatum to Canada’s RIM, the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, that it will have to provide encryption solutions if it wants to continue operations in India. Sources told ET that during Thursday’s meet, DoT had communicated its stance to both RIM executives and the Canadian High Commission that service providers (telcos) here would be asked to discontinue BlackBerry services unless the company provides monitoring solutions either in the form of encryption keys, or by shifting servers to India. Sources also said that DoT had told the Canadian company that Thursday’s meet could be the last of a series of meetings on the issue, and RIM would have to come back with a solution to break the deadlock. Both DoT and RIM have been in talks to resolve the BlackBerry imbroglio for months. Encryption solutions will allow security agencies to monitor emails and data sent between BlackBerry devices. Industry sources said that an announcement was expected soon from both the government and RIM on the issue. India has over 114,000 BlackBerry customers among five operators—Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, BPL and Reliance Communications. At the same time, it must be pointed out that both the DoT and RIM have remained tight-lipped about Thursday’s meet details. “We had a meeting (with the DoT) today. It was positive. The talks will continue,” the RIM spokesperson in India told ET, but refused to divulge details. An executive with a service provider that offers BlackBerry services in India told ET that an unresolved issue was related to the sharing of costs to move servers to India. “RIM does not want to bear this cost. Ditto with service providers who offer BlackBerry services. RIM feels that if it accepts the demands of the Indian government, it will set a precedent as other countries may demand a similar arrangement,” the executive added on condition of anonymity. Telecom minister A Raja had recently said that RIM had assured the government to provide a solution in two months. However, the issue took a new twist last week, when the Canadian company in a note to its customers on May 23 said that it did not have a copy of the customer’s encryption key, while also adding that it would “simply be unable to accommodate” any such request. Another factor that is learnt to have earned the displeasure of the DoT here is RIM’s public response to the Indian government’s request to set up servers in India. “The location of data centres and the customer’s choice of wireless network are irrelevant factors from a security perspective since end-to-end encryption is utilised,” RIM customer update had added. It is also learnt that the DoT has rejected RIM’s argument that it did not possess the encryption keys. Instead, the DoT has pointed out that since RIM’s BlackBerry service meets the provisions of US CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, 1994) regulations, all BlackBerry data traffic originating on Indian mobile networks can be tracked electronically by CALEA sleuths in the Federal Communications Commission. They have also added that the US would not be able to monitor this data unless RIM had opened its networks to American agencies. -

Android Ahoy! Yesterday, Google introduced the world to Android capabilities at the Google I/O Conference held in San Francisco. For those who don't know, Android is the Open Handset Alliance's mobile software platform. At the conference, an Android-enabled device featuring touch-screen functionality, advanced graphical capabilities, as well as Internet access was demonstrated. Undoubtedly, the mentioned features sound very similar to those of the iPhone... However, with Android, the company is seeking to extend the browser to hand-held devices; a feature that currently only the iPhone offers. The audience at the conference was shown a view of a street from an Android system as also a demonstration of the Pac-Man video game. Google also demonstrated Android's zooming capabilities, a compass mode, site navigation, and access to Google Maps. Since Google sells Internet-based ads, applications, appliances, and license fees; it will be able to do the same by bringing the Internet to hand-held devices. With an Android SDK (software development kit) already available, the first Android systems are expected in the latter half of this year.
