Updated : Blackberry Blackout By Indian Govt? Tata Tele's Application Rejected !

Meeting between RIM and DoT Today RIM (Research in Motion) has expressed its inability to hand over the master keys to the Indian government, claiming its security structure doesn't allow for the company, let alone any third party to read information transferred over its network. However, latest reports say that RIM officials will be today meeting up with the Department of Telecom (DoT) to discuss India's concerns over the inability of national security agencies to intercept email sent via Blackberry devices. Quite a few solutions have been suggested to the long-pending Blackberry issue, prominent amongst which is that RIM set up its servers in the country. Despite the long-drawn discussions though, no concrete solution has been reached so far. RIM's latest response has been that Blackberry security architecture for enterprise customers is designed in such a way so as to exclude the capability for RIM or any third party to read encrypted information under any circumstances. On this subject, the latest Reuters report quotes Internet security expert Vijay Mukhi as saying, "America has spent billions of dollars for monitoring the cyberspace. I don't believe they would allow BlackBerry to operate if nobody had the encryption key." Mukhi argues that RIM could give security agencies the rights to monitor emails. He adds, "There is actually a concern. Terrorists do use technology and they would some day or maybe they are already using BlackBerry services. So how do you stop them?". -
BSNL seeks free WiMAX entry State-owned BSNL has sought that telecom regulator TRAI exempt it from paying any entry fee or licence fee for its upcoming WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) as it planned to provide these services largely in rural India. For private telecom operators and internet service providers, BSNL has sought that the government auction WiMAX spectrum and set a reserve price of Rs 10 crore, Rs 5 crore and Rs 2 crore for A ,B and C circles, respectively. BSNL was replying to the Trai consultation process to determine the allocation and pricing methodology for new WiMAX frequencies—2.3-2.4 GHz, 2.5-2.69 GHz and 3.3-3.6 GHz bands. BSNL also wants Trai to lay a framework that will allow both telcos and ISPs to bid for WiMAX spectrum. Telecom regulator Trai too favours a reserve price of Rs 10 crore, Rs 5 crore and Rs 2 crore for A, B and C circles, respectively, for WiMAX spectrum. Trai had arrived at this figure by basing the reserve price for WiMAX auction to be a fourth of that for the 3G spectrum auctions. The world’s largest chip manufacturer Intel and telecom network majors too have also written to Trai endorsing their support for the reserve price proposed by Trai for WiMAX spectrum auctions. However, other private operators GSM through their industry association — The Cellular Operators Association of India — have told Trai that regulator cannot discuss the pricing and allocation of spectrum in these new WiMAX bands until there is ‘complete clarity on the quantum of radio frequencies available’. “It is also not clear at this stage how much is the quantum of spectrum that is expected to be available in each band, both in the short as well as medium term. It may be appreciated that the time frame for the availability of spectrum as also its quantum, would be relevant both for issues related to pricing as well as for determining the future plans of the operators,” the COAI said. WiMAX is an evolving technology that is considered a threat to telecom services, especially third generation mobile services. As per global industry experience, WiMAX offers data speeds that are 10-30 times faster than 3G. Courtesy : Economic Times

RIM will Not Hand over Master Keys to Government The last we heard about the ongoing Blackberry saga was that Canada-based Research in Motion (RIM) had agreed to pass on sensitive customer data to the Department of Telecom (DoT), provided the latter took responsibility for loss of data of any individual. In the event RIM had carried out the promise, the company would have had to hand over the master keys to the Indian government and national security agencies. However, in the latest twist to this story, RIM has expressed its inability to hand over the master keys to the Indian government, saying its security structure doesn't allow the company, let alone any third party to read information transferred over its network. A company statement said Blackberry security architecture for enterprise customers is purposefully designed to exclude the capability for RIM or any third party to read encrypted information under any circumstances. However, in a separate statement, RIM also said that the company regrets any concern prompted by incorrect speculation or rumors and wishes to assure customers that it is committed to continue serving security-conscious business in the Indian market. The Blackberry issue has been witnessing flip-flops ever since it surfaced. Several solutions have been proposed, prominent amongst which is that RIM set up servers in India so that Blackberry traffic can be monitored by national security agencies, the other suggestion being that all data between Blackberry users be stored for a year on the servers of telcos that offer the service in the country. However all talks have failed to reach any concrete solution so far. -

Vodafone Starts Credit Facility For Its Prepaid Subscribers
Honest posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Vodafone Starts Credit Facility for Subscribers Mobile phone users with prepaid connectivity option often face the problem of insufficient prepaid balance, because of which they sometimes cannot carry out important conversations. Also, at times people get so engaged in their conversation that they don't realize when their prepaid balance gets over; this often tends to happen when there's no recharge shop nearby, or it's the middle of the night. Now those with a Vodafone prepaid connection need not worry about this problem. As a solution to this issue, the company has launched a new product called "Chhota Credit". Through this facility, an amount of Rs.10 gets credited to the subscriber's account by just sending an SMS to a toll free number. Subscribers who have a balance of less than Rs. 5 can use this service by sending 'CREDIT' as an SMS to 144 to get Rs. 10 credited to their prepaid account. However, subscribers will be charged Re. 1 per transaction as service charge. This credit will have a validity of 7 days and will be adjusted against the next recharge. The Chhota Credit service is available only to those prepaid subscribers who have completed over 3 months on the Vodafone network. -

Reliance Communications Close To Acquire Global Virtual Network Operator Vanco
Honest replied to @ksh@T's topic in Reliance Communications
RCom arm buys UK’s Vanco Group for $77 m -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The combination of Reliance Globalcom and Vanco would create a new breed of integrated services communications powerhouse. – Mr Anil Ambani -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reliance Globalcom, a subsidiary of Reliance Communications (RCom), has acquired London-based managed network services provider, Vanco Group, for about $77 million (Rs 324 crore). The acquisition of Vanco would add $365 million (Rs 1,550 crore) to the annual revenues of Reliance Globalcom through secure long-term contracts with large enterprise customers, RCom informed the stock exchanges in a statement issued on Monday. Vanco is considered to be amongst the world’s top five managed global network players with over 220 multinational customers, according to research firm Gartner Inc. Vanco managed network services are available in over 40,000 locations across 163 countries with 90 per cent of its revenue from developed markets of the UK, the US, France and Germany. The Vanco acquisition will increase Reliance Globalcom’s tally of enterprise customers to over 1,400, the company statement said. “The combination of Reliance Globalcom’s extensive capabilities and Vanco’s unique global experience would create a new breed of integrated services communications powerhouse,” Mr Anil Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Communications, said. The acquisition will also enable Reliance Globalcom to add nine more network management centres to its global service systems and leverage Vanco’s relationships with over 700 telecom carriers across the globe. Reliance has been on the lookout for inorganic growth opportunities. Last month, the company acquired eWave World, a 4G operator focused on emerging markets across Asia, Latin America, Western Europe and Africa. Courtesy : Business Line
