Bharti-airtel Launches 'dial A Postpaid' Scheme

^^^ The scheme sound to be good my dear friends. But how many free SMS will the customer get with this plan ? Regards. -
^^^ @Ganesh My dear friend, Spice D88n is dual mode handset which is compatible with both GSM and CDMA. While Nokia 6275 is only CDMA handset. Both the handsets are quite good. First of all you must take the decision, whether you want to go for dual mode handset or only cdma. Nokia can be a good choice. But at Rs.6500/- a second hand handset seems to be quite costly. If it is available at Rs.5000/- then its ok. As one of our member told at the forum that the price of Nokia 6275 has already reduced. Thats why at Rs.6500/- it will be a costly deal. If you are getting brand new Spice D88n at Rs.7350/-, then it could be a better deal. You can use two connections on this phone at the same time. One Reliance CDMA and other any GSM. Final decision is of yours only my dear friend. Regards.

^^^ @biswajit My dear friend, you just have to use a HCC (Handset Change Card) for retaining your current number. By using HCC your current number will be transferred to a new handset of your choice. Regards.

MTNL Gearing up for Mobile TV in June Our very own MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam) is getting ready to launch Mobile TV for users in the country and in case you’re thinking that it would take them at least a few months more... you’d be mistaken. The launch date is in June of this year. As per MTNL Executive Director J Gopal - MTNL will be offering 21 channels at first and that’s nothing to sneeze at. Tests are already underway with their technology partner so we can be sure that this is no rumor. The next step in mobile technology is here and it would seem like we're right on top of it. The official launch date and information on subscription etc. has not yet been revealed, so stay tuned. Source : Tech2

Apple Iphone India Launch Likely In September 2008
Honest replied to Arun's topic in General Technical Discussion
3G iPhone is on the Way! Any which way you look at it, Apple's iPhone does manage to get around! Rumor has it that a Gen-Next 3G iPhone is on its way. Stoking the speculation are a couple of factors. One, as reported by a leading tech Web site, a top-brass O2 (exclusive iPhone carrier in UK and Ireland) executive vaguely said that Apple and Telefonica (of which O2 is a subsidiary) will make a joint statement in 'the coming weeks'. Two, rather uncharacteristic of Apple -- the company has let its iPhone inventory go limp in recent weeks. The public announcement came earlier this week -- that Apple online stores in the US and UK have run out of iPhones -- with no indication whatsoever about re-stocking. O2 did much the same thing last month when it slashed iPhone prices leading to an erosion of inventory, giving no indication of renewing stock. Three, the much-publicized deals Apple is getting into with carriers across the globe. Take India for instance; apparently two carriers, Vodafone and Bharti Airtel seem set to market the iPhone in the country. Meanwhile, Apple, in characteristic fashion, continues to keep mum about any such phone. For the showman he is known to be, Steve Jobs might be leaving the best for the last, i.e. the annual developers conference scheduled for June 9 this year. All eyes already on Jobs, have we? Samsung, LG Join Forces For Mobile TV Samsung Electronics is combining efforts with fellow Korean electronics maker LG Electronics to develop a new standard for mobile TV broadcasts, the companies announced Wednesday. Harris Corp., an American broadcast technology company, will provide key elements of the technology, which will allow mobile devices such as cell phones to receive signals sent out by local TV stations. That technology will be competing with two others to become the standard for mobile TV, a decision that rests with the TV industry's technical standards-setting body for digital broadcasts. One of the other standards is from the French video technology company Thomson. The third is from Qualcomm Inc., which developed the MediaFLO video service currently offered for a monthly fee on mobile phones by Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. The TV industry wants to set a single standard for mobile TV broadcasts - and avoid a costly battle among them - but it probably will find the technology then must compete with other video technologies offered by cell phone carriers. The standard-setting body, the Advanced Television Systems Committee, is expected to select a standard by early next year. Mobile TV broadcasts are one of the ways broadcasters hope to capitalize on a federally mandated switch to all-digital signals. After Feb. 17, 2009, all regular analog broadcasts will stop and older, non-digital TVs not connected to cable will need a converter to display broadcasts. Source : Tech2

Verizon Wireless to Introduce Linux Phones Verizon Wireless is backing a free operating system that competes with programs from Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. and expects it to become the "preferred" software on its network. It's the first U.S. carrier to join the LiMo Foundation, which aims to unite handset makers, software companies and carriers on a software platform that will make it easier and cheaper to create a wide variety of phones. The carrier's endorsement Wednesday is an important boost to the stature of LiMo, or Linux Mobile, and its prospects in the U.S. It already has the backing of large Asian and European carriers, as well as handset makers like Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. "There is now no doubt that LiMo-powered devices will comprise a significant percentage of many operators' portfolios," said Stuart Carlaw, cell-phone industry analyst at ABI Research. Kyle Malady, vice president of network for Verizon, said he expects the company to sell both simple and "smart" phones using LiMo next year. That's a potential blow to Qualcomm, which supplies the software for most of Verizon's phones, excluding smart phones. "We expect that Linux Mobile will rapidly become our preferred operating system," Malady said. "As the development community looks at how best to bring new applications to the marketplace, they should check out LiMo and Linux Mobile first." But the company is not adopting LiMo to the exclusion of other operating systems, he added - it now sells phones with a variety of operating systems, and expects to continue doing so. Verizon Wireless is also in the process of opening up its network on a wholesale basis to any device that meets basic technical requirements, but Malady made clear that the backing of LiMo is separate from that initiative, and the company plans to sell LiMo devices under its own brand. While Verizon Wireless expects the adoption of LiMo to speed development, the difference between it and current cell phone software may not be apparent to users. The software package does not include a user interface, so the look and feel of LiMo phones may be borrowed from current phones. LiMo's software is based on Linux, a freely distributed operating system that's mainly used in server computers and in niches like TV set-top boxes, where Microsoft's dominant Windows system doesn't reach. The foundation released the first version of its software package in March, and Motorola, Samsung, LG and Panasonic have showed off phones using it. Motorola also has older phones that use its own flavor of Linux. While more than 90 percent of PCs run Windows, the market for cell-phone software is much more fragmented. Microsoft has its own software for "smart" phones. Symbian Ltd., whose main backer is Nokia, sells the competing Series 60 software. Verizon Wireless uses a system from Qualcomm Inc. for most of its phones. Apple Inc. created its own software for the iPhone. Google Inc. is backing an Open Handset Alliance that is creating yet another system, called Android. The first phones running that software are expected later this year. "The mobile industry really was very reluctant to follow the path of the PC industry and cede the heart of the device to any single company," said Morgan Gillis, executive director of the London-based LiMo foundation. "This is really why Microsoft has not gained any significant traction with Windows Mobile, and also why Nokia has not been successful with Series 60 as an industry platform proposition." To try to unite the industry, four major handset makers, plus overseas carriers Vodafone Group PLC and NTT DoCoMo, set up the LiMo Foundation last year as an organization that is not governed by any one company, making software that will be free for everyone to use. Malady said Verizon Wireless chose to put more weight behind LiMo than Android because LiMo unites diverse industry participants in an inclusive governance structure and has software available already. Also joining the LiMo Foundation on Wednesday were SK Telecom Co., the largest carrier in South Korea, and the Mozilla Corp., which puts out the popular Firefox Web browser. Like Linux, Firefox is maintained on an "open source" basis, where everyone has free access to the software's blueprints. Source : Tech2

ASUS To Launch New WinMob Handset, P560 ASUS is gearing up for the launch of yet another Windows Mobile handset - the P560. Personally, I think the design, although not as jazzy as their Lamborghini ZX1 that was launched here in India recently, is still quite an eye-catcher. The P560 quad-band GSM handset is equipped with a 2.8-inch TFT touch screen and runs on Windows Mobile version 6.1. It comes with a TI Omap 2430 processor that should provide speeds of 450 MHz. Apart from 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM it also supports external memory via microSD cards. If all of that isn’t enough, it also comes equipped with a 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera and a secondary video call camera located in front. The P560 also supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and is capable of providing HSDPA (3.6 Mbps). This sleek handset is set to launch hopefully sometime in June and has an approximate price of Rs. 32,500 ($772). Stay Tuned. Source : Tech2

Nokia Takes On Google With Online Mapping Nokia is quite literally taking on the world with the latest addition to their online social website Ovi. At a conference in California, Nokia revealed an early version of their new Map software on Ovi. Like Google Maps this online application allows users to adjust various angles onscreen and zoom in or out of the map itself. Nokia has used vector-based mapping so it’s going to be a bit faster than Google. The maps will also allow users to select various points of interest and directions to and from places. The directions will take into account pedestrian-only streets and alleys as well. The best part is that this application can easily be synced to your mobile handset and the routes etc. plotted or marked can be viewed. It can also store places of interest you may have marked on your handset. The company is planning on publishing an API for developers to create various applications that will allow this software to interact with other software on the PC or mobile phone. Source : Tech 2
