  7. 2G case: Raja criticizes CBI for not filing documents NEW DELHI: Former Telecom Minister A Raja on Tuesday accused CBI in a Delhi court of wilfully not filing on record the documents of telecom regulator TRAI in 2G spectrum allocation scam case. "I know I am here in the country's one of the biggest scam case. I am not joking but with due respect to CBI, even a sub-inspector of Tilak Marg police station here will not write or file such a charge sheet unless or until he has something wrong in his mind," Raja told Special CBI Judge O P Saini. The DMK leader said he did not violate norms regarding the roaming facility and this was existing even before he took over the charge as Telecom Minister. "I did not violate norms regarding roaming facilty. CBI should prove that before I took charge as Telecom Minister, roaming facility was unknown to this country. But if I prove that roaming was already existing here and it was approved by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), then there is nothing against me," Raja, who argued himself, said. He said his actions on roaming facilities were as per TRAI guidelines. CBI, which referred to a letter of April 24, 2008, of the TRAI chairman in its charge sheet, did not file it on the court's record till date, he said. "CBI is interpreting from the letter of the TRAI Chairman that I breached the norms by violating TRAI Act but is not filing it in the court. I want to accuse CBI that it is willfully not submitting full documents which will show the real interpretation of the documents," he said. The court was hearing arguments on a Law Ministry report which said a firm should have more than 10 per cent stake in another for being its 'associate'. Courtesy : The Economic Times

  11. Former India captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi passes away One of India's most visionary captains and its youngest-ever skipper Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi lost his battle with a lung infection and passed away at a Delhi hospital today evening. Pataudi, who captained India in 40 of his 46 Tests is survived by his wife, yesteryear acting superstar Sharmila Tagore, son Saif Ali Khan and daughters Saba and Soha Ali Khan. "His condition has deteriorated since Wednesday and he is unable to maintain his oxygen level in spite of maximum treatment. He continues to remain in the ICU (intensive care unit)," news agency IANS quoted Neeraj Jain, senior consultant and chairman of pulmonolgy (chest medicine) at Sir Gangaram Hospital in central Delhi, as saying earlier today. The 70-year-old Pataudi was admitted to the hospital in August with acute lung infection. The condition does not allow normal passage of oxygen to both the lungs. The patient breathes out more carbon dioxide during infection. "This disease....had been static since the last three months. It worsened very acutely over the last four weeks," Jain told IANS adding a possible lung transplant was discussed. "The possibility of lung transplant was discussed very early as soon as his condition worsened. But he was not a suitable candidate for it," he added. India may have won only nine of the 46 Tests under Pataudi, but it was under his astute leadership that India won their first overseas Test against New Zealand at Dunedin in 1968 enroute to winning their first away series 3-1. Pataudi played three spinners in the team for most of his captaincy stint, as he believed that India should play to its strengths. Pataudi, who became India captain at the age of 21, only a few months after an accident permanently damaged the vision in his right eye, scored 2793 runs including six centuries and a highest score of 203* in 46 Tests at an average of 34.91. Mansur was nicknamed "Tiger" by teammates for his aggressive approach and agility in fielding. He was born to Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, eighth Nawab of Pataudi and his wife Sajida Sultan, in Bhopal on January 5, 1941; and was educated at Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, Lockers Park Prep School in Hertfordshire, Winchester College, and Balliol College, Oxford. Pataudi was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1964 and was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 1967. Iftikhar and Mansur are the only father-and-son duo to captain India. Pataudi served as a ICC match referee between 1993 and 1996; and he was also a consultant to the BCCI from 2007 and part of the first IPL governing council but refused to continue in that role following Lalit Modi's sacking as its chairman in October 2010. 21. Sharp launches new 3D Android smartphone, the Aquos SH8298U After LG’s latest 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D, Sharp has announced the launch of a new 3D phone, the Aquos SH8298U, according to GSMArena. The phone will run on Google’s Android 2.3.4 operating system. It sports a 4.2-inch qHD screen with glasses-free stereoscopic 3D display. As part of the specs, the phone runs on a single-core 1.4GHz CPU with an Adreno 205 GPU and 512 MB of RAM along with 2GB of internal memory. It features two 8 megapixel cameras with a single LED flash on the back for 3D recording; however video resolution hasn’t been disclosed yet. It comes with a 1240mAh battery and with that screen size plus 3D, the battery will have to perform extremely well for the device to churn out even average usage times. The battery life may just decide the phone’s fate in the market and with 3D phones there’s another feature that might just be worth mentioning. The presence of a 3D depth slider might just be a necessity for most users, as currently glasses-free 3D viewing might take some time to get used to. The phone has only been launched in Japan as of now, but Sharp is expected to launch the device in other parts of the world in the coming months. Courtesy : Tech2 Thanks for Karan Shah

  23. Govt to come out with New Telecom Policy 2011: Sibal 1st January l The Ecomonic Times l New Delhi In an effort to infuse greater transparency into the sector, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal today announced formulation of a new and comprehensive National Telecom Policy 2011 that he says will be "clear and transparent." "Eleven years have passed since NTP'99 and many changes have taken place thereafter. Action will be initiated to formulate a comprehensive NTP 2011," the Minister told reporters while releasing the 100-day agenda for telecom sector. He, however, did not elaborate if changes would be made to the existing NTP'99 policy in respect of allocation of spectrum on the basis of first-come first-served. Sources, however, said that revenue share would continue to be the regime for payment of licence fee by operators. The Department of Telecom (DoT) will hold consultations with key stakeholders to evolve a "clear and transparent" regime covering licencing, spectrum allocation, tariffs/pricing, linkage with roll-out performance, spectrum sharing, trading and mergers and acquisition. The announcement comes on the heels of the controversy surrounding the allocation of 2G spectrum in 2008 at 2001 prices. He said that three elements -- reasonable revenue for government, affordable services to users and robust growth of the sector -- would be kept in mind while framing the new policy. "We need to balance all these three elements," Sibal said, adding that the government should not get revenue at the cost of industry while industry should not make super normal profits at the cost of consumers by keeping tariffs high. He also emphasised that spectrum needs to be made available to meet the demand and the DoT would initiate a dialogue with the Department of Space, Ministries of I&B and Defence to get the spectrum vacated for civil use. On extending Mobile Number Portability, a service that allows subscribers to retain their number while changing the service provider, from Haryana to the rest of the country, the Minister said that country-wide launch of MNP was on DoT's priority list. The government had launched the service from Haryana in November and had announced to cover the remaining parts of the country by January 20. On the launch of 3G services, which have been delayed due to security concerns, he said: "Steps would be taken to enable operators to launch services in their entire plenitude without delay. "Security issues regarding telecom equipment procurement, messenger services and subscriber verification will be resolved. Steps will be taken to establish the Central Monitoring System which will facilitate and prevent misuse of lawful interception facility," Sibal added.
