  1. Gmail gets Advanced Sign-in Security Upgrade Gmail gets a bank account like security feature Last year, Google made Gmail access via HTTPS protocol default for all account holders to add a security layer. Now, Google has introduced another security layer upgrade with an advanced opt-in feature dubbed 2-Step Verification. This 2-Step Verification feature requires using a specific code to sign in to the Gmail account. Google either calls you (only if you are in U.S., I suppose) to give that code or sends the code via SMS or generates it via a mobile app for Android, BlackBerry or iPhone device. Gmail finally gets a bank account like security feature for sign-in. Gmail's 2-Step Verification advanced sign-in feature is optional and would be visible to all Google account holders at Manage Account page soon. This new security feature makes your Google account more secure and most importantly Gmail out of all Google services. The 2-Step Verification stands for its name since it requires two major credentials: your Google account password and a six digit pass code obtained using phone. This requires the user to set up the opt-in 2-Step Verification feature from the Manage Account page. During the set-up process, you'll be required to enter your phone number and also create certain backup pass codes just in case you lose your phone or it gets stolen. After completing the 2-Step Verification setup, you ll land on to an additional page once you log into your Google account using your login ID and password. To prevent third-party sign-in or someone sneaking into your account, make the best of 2-Step Verification. Yes, it does involve an additional extra step but it certainly secures your account. Google had been testing this feature with Google apps users and it would be available to all Google account holders over a period of time. Interestingly, this feature is in tune with the Facebook's new security features implementation. Thanks to Samir Makwana Courtesy : Techtree
  2. ^^^ Prepaid will be the best my dear friend.
  3. @amitnsonu My dear friend, earlier Vodafone was charging Rs. 699/- for 1 GB & Rs.899/- for Unlimited Gprs in Mumbai. They were the biggest looters in data market. This was the only reason I converted my 10 year old postpaid to prepaid in December 2010. Now leeching the benefits of full talktime, lower call rates using bonus cards, etc. and that too without paying any hefty taxes which are applicable for postpaid subscriber. Apart from that if anyone bought Iphone from Vodafone which is network locked....then the subscriber have to shell huge amount of money from his pocket for data plans.
  4. ^^^ My dear friend, You will be billed as per your data plan and not as per the speeds you are getting.

  11. DoT seeks view on Trai's power to terminate licences The Economic Times l 12 Feb l New Delhi The telecom ministry is seeking legal opinion on whether the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has power to recommend termination of mobile permits . The Trai had recommended cancellation of 62 licences of five telcos in November for their failure and delay in rolling out mobile services. The ministry was, however, in favour of levying only a penalty. But wary of being embroiled in any controversy, the ministry thought it prudent to seek legal advice on the matter. ET reviewed internal DoT documents, where it had sought legal opinion on these issues. In its communication , the DoT also wants legal opinion on whether it should send back the proposal to Trai if it decided to modify or accept only a part of the regulator’s demands. A telecom department official had earlier told ET that the communications ministry was against cancellation as new entrants had invested significant resources to rollout networks, while also adding that termination could send wrong signals to foreign investors in addition to embroiling the government is a long legal battle. In November 2010, the Trai had asked the government to cancel 62 licences of five telecom operators, including joint ventures of international operators like Telenor , Emirates Telecommunications Corp and Sistema JSFC, along with domestic players such as Loop and Videocon for failing to meet rollout obligations. The ministry can override the regulator, but as per protocol , the department must first send the case back to the Trai. In the instance of the regulator sticking with its stance, the DoT can reject the regulator’s views. In November, the government had issued showcause notices to these five companies. It is learnt that Uninor and Etisalat DB have already submitted their response, while others are likely to do so within the next couple of says.
  12. Trai To Script Vas Norms

TRAI to Curb Activation of VAS without explicit subscriber Consent TRAI has directed all the service providers to identify the root cause behind the problem of VAS activation without explicit subscriber consent. For a very long time Telecom subscribers have been complaining of activation of VAS services without explicit consent. Especially in rural areas and among naive ,gullible consumers this problem is more rampant as they unknowingly respond to a OBD (out bound dialled) IVR calls by pressing some keys. Activation of VAS services through this medium is kept in the category of implicit consent. TRAI is of the view that VAS should be activated only through explicit consent of the customers. During the half yearly meeting of the Consumer advocacy group which was held at Chennai in the month of December, several consumer advocates raised the issue and thus TRAI has taken up to resolve the issue. With that objective TRAI has written to all service providers to identify the root cause and to take actions to mitigate the problem. TRAI has directed service providers to send a detailed report on the cause of the problem and action taken. Courtesy : Teleguru
  13. Govt may seize phone tapping machines The Economic Times l 12 Feb l New Delhi The government plans to retrieve nearly 2,000 so-called passive interception machines that can be used to tap phones. These machines were imported over a five-year period, a senior official in the home ministry told ET on condition of anonymity. The buyers, around 2,000 in all, include private security agencies, companies that are part of large business houses, as well as official users such as the police and government’s intelligence services. Almost 90% of these were imported by the private sector over the five-year period tracked by the ministry, said the official. The ministry, which has carried out an internal investigation into the import of phone-tapping equipment, has asked the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Department of Telecom (DoT) to verify and locate all these machines and take them back. Oddly, while the import of such machines was not illegal—till last year they were in the open general licence, or OGL, list—their usage is. That is because only the government has the authority to tap phones. Government agencies are trying to figure out why so many private companies imported this equipment since there is no legal use to which they could have been put to. The only legitimate non-state users are private telecom companies that can intercept and record phone conversations if directed by the government. “The imports were not illegal because they were in the OGL. It was only last year that they were put on the restricted list,” the official quoted earlier said. He declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter. “We have asked the IB to carry out a verification and the machines would be taken back, “ the official added. Home Secretary GK Pillai declined comment on the matter. The DoT has asked private players to return these equipment. “All companies or individuals that have imported, procured or possess interception equipment must mandatorily submit all details of these instruments by March first week. They have to submit it to the respective telecom enforcement, resource and monitoring (TERM) cells of DoT,” a top DoT official said. The department has told these firms that the government is independently collecting data and non-co-operation could have severe consequences. “From March, after cross-checking the results, we will begin prosecuting individuals/companies that have not submitted the requisite information or have suppressed the number of such equipment,” the official added. The issue of phone-tapping has become contentious after media reports last year that phones of several people, including top politicians, have been tapped. The government has emphatically denied having authorised tapping of phones of any politician. But government sources say they cannot rule out the possibility of anyone having resorted to illegal phone tapping . The home ministry probe is a step in the direction of curbing illegal tapping. What has heightened government concern is the easy availability of the requisite technology to carry out interception.
  14. 2G spectrum: ADAG says it’s cooperating with CBI in probe The Economic Times l 12 Feb l Mumbai The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) said it is cooperating with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2G spectrum scandal probe. Its officials have been questioned by the investigators, the statement said. “As part of this process, the CBI has also examined a few officials of Reliance ADA Group, and we are fully co-operating with the authorities in this regard,” a Reliance ADA Group spokesperson said in a late night statement. Earlier in the day, the group, in a separate statement, claimed to have identified stock brokers responsible for spreading “baseless sensational charges” about the group that triggered a sell-off in the shares of six of its companies on Wednesday. ADAG sought “punitive interim orders” by Sebi against the identified entities for “blatant violation” of capital market regulations which resulted in group companies losing at least Rs 11,500 crore in value in the share market on Wednesday. ADAG said the stock brokers involved in what it described as manipulative bear activity against its companies spread rumours by using mass emails, short message services and voice calls. The group did not disclose the identity of the brokers. Shares have recovered in the past two sessions led by gains in infrastructure developer Reliance Infra. On Friday, shares of Reliance Infra ended at Rs 615.70 on the Bombay Stock Exchange , up 5.2% from its previous close, buoyed by news that the company would consider a share buyback on Monday. There was also concern over the group’s corporate governance practices after The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, a body regulating auditors, approached Reliance Infrastructure’s auditors seeking clarification on a recent Sebi consent order through which the group settled charges of securities laws violations.

  16. ADAG blames rumours as stocks tank The Times of India l 10 Feb l Mumbai Stocks of companies from Anil Ambani's Reliance (ADA) group were hammered on Wednesday on the back of rumours as well as news reports suggesting that the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) was looking into their accounts. At the close of trading, group companies like Reliance Infra and Reliance Power lost over 14% each. Investors in all the ADAG companies together were poorer by about Rs 11,500 crore. After the market close, a group spokesman said its corporate rivals were yet again spreading baseless rumours to affect investor sentiment. The spokesman said the group has already approached market regulator Sebi for an investigation into the crash. It started during afternoon trades, when a news channel reported that ICAI was looking into allegations that two ADAG companies — Reliance Infra and RNRL — had used funds raised through foreign currency bonds in the stock market, classified them as 'yield management certificates/deposits', and misrepresented them in the annual reports. At the same time, there were reports that group chairman Anil Ambani was meeting telecom minister Kapil Sibal about the investigations in the 2G scam. Both reports affected market sentiment and all the seven ADAG stocks tanked, with Reliance Power crashing to a new all-time low at Rs 91 on the BSE in intra-day trades before closing at Rs 95, down 14.3%. Among the other ADAG stocks, Reliance Infra lost nearly 19% to Rs 535, Reliance Capital was down 14.1% at Rs 413 and Reliance Power was down 9% at Rs 113. Compared to these slides, the benchmark BSE sensex closed a little over 1% off. Dealers said there was no particular negative news about the group that could have led to such panic selling in the ADAG counters. After close of trading, a release from ADAG said that several "completely baseless and motivated rumours" were being spread by the group's corporate rivals, which was accompanied by "vicious and illegal bear hammering of (ADAG's) listed stocks, to create panic and destabilize the markets". The release added: "We have made a formal complaint to Sebi and the stock exchanges to immediately investigate these illegal trades, and take appropriate action to safeguard the interests of our over 11 million investors."

  18. LAVA A10: A Budget Touch Phone with IPS Display This 3-inch display bearing phone costs Rs. 5,500 Indian mobile phone maker LAVA has released the A10, a touchscreen phone for Rs. 5,500 that has advertises a few baits to get people hooked. First and foremost is its 3-inch IPS (In-Plane Switching) screen; the type of screen that is used in the Apple iPhone 4 or even the iPad. What it bets on providing is a superior image and a 178 degree wide viewing angle. What they haven't mentioned is the screen resolution, as this is a major contributor to the iPhone 4's display quality. But considering it is an inexpensive phone, we wouldn't imagine it to be above a QVGA or 320 x 240 pixels. Also, there's no clarity over whether this is a capacitive or resistive type - but the words "Multi-touch" in the description makes us believe (and hope) that it is the former. Second is the Gunmetal finish body which looks nice and, hmm...reminds us of the Samsung Wave S8500. It's got a 3.2 mega-pixel camera with Flash, a Yamaha PA system (that should promise us loud decibels of sound from the speaker-phone, if not the "great quality" as mentioned) and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Another feature which caught our eye by surprise is the "Map my India" maps built-in, but there's no GPS chip mentioned anywhere so turn-by-turn navigation's out of the question. There are a couple of games pre-installed and a G-sensor for motion based gaming. Lastly, a microSD card slot supports up to 16GB of memory. Courtesy : Techtree

  24. ICAI asks ADAG cos to clarify misclassification of accounts The Economic Times l 11 Feb l New Delhi Accounting regulator ICAI today said it has sought clarification from the ADA Group companies RNRL and Reliance Infra on the issue of "misclassification" in their accounts as pointed out by market regulator Sebi. "We have sought clarifications as to why this consent order (by SEBI) has gone. If the consent order had not mentioned accounts, we would not have sought clarifications," ICAI President Amarjit Chopra told reporters on the sidelines of ICAI Annual Day celebrations. Last month Sebi passed a consent order saying that its probe has revealed that prima facie RNRL and R-Infra were responsible for misrepresenting the nature of investments in yield management certificates/deposits and profits and loss accounts thereof, in their annual reports for fiscal years 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. The order asked the two companies to implement the policy of rotation of statutory auditors "and therefore the statutory auditors of March 2010 shall not be re-appointed for period of three years from March 2010-11." "The consent order clearly refers to accounting issues involved. It speaks of three things-- one is misclassification of nature on investments, second wrong booking of profit and loss and third why auditors have not been re-appointed," Chopra added. He said ICAI has sent letters to the two companies as well the auditors involved. Stocks of various companies belonging to the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group have fallen sharply in the past few weeks and the group has blamed corporate rivals, a cartel of stock market manipulators and "rumour mongering" for this heavy sell-off. While the group has already sought an investigation by Sebi, the stock exchanges and investigation agencies into the matter, the Group today said it has "identified stockbrokers sending mass e-mails/SMS/voice calls with baseless sensational charges against ADA Group."
