  2. TDSAT asks Videocon to pay 60% penalty; admits case against DoT 21 January l The Economic Times l New Delhi Telecom tribunal TDSAT today asked another new operator Videocon Telecom to pay 60 per cent of Rs 12.45 crore penalty slapped on it by the Department of Telecom for missing roll-out obligations, while admitting its appeal against DoT. The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal bench, headed by Justice S B Sinha , allowed Videocon's plea but directed it to pay around Rs 3 crore within two weeks. The company has already paid Rs 6.95 crore to DoT. TDSAT's interim order follows Videocon plea, challenging the demand notice issued by DoT seeking Liquidated Damages (LD) for not rolling out its services within the stipulated period of one year. On January 1, DoT had issued notice to Videocon demanding LD for four circles. It has demanded Rs 6.95 crore for Kolkata circle, Rs 3.35 crore for West Bengal circle, Rs 1.95 crore for UP East circle and 0.25 crore for Haryana circle. Earlier, in a similar case, TDSAT had directed Uninor to pay 60 per cent of its penalty amount demanded by the DoT for failing to roll-out services in 18 circles. Directing DoT to file reply within two weeks, TDSAT has listed the matter on February 10, for next hearing. Senior advocate Meet Malhotra , appearing for Videocon, said the delay was caused by government restrictions on import of telecom equipment on account of security, apart from delay in SACFA Clearance in granting spectrum or radio waves. While the company is contesting the penalty charges imposed on it for four circles, it has already paid LD for the Kolkata circle under protest. The deadline for payment of damages for the remaining three circles, for which it has been served notices, was to expire today. DoT had sent notices to several firms, which got new 2G licenses bundled with start up spectrum but have not started offering services in various circles. As per the conditions of the Unified Access Service License (UASL), the telcos are required to roll-out their networks within one year from the date of allocation of spectrum. According to the agreement, in case new licencees fail to roll-out services within the stipulated period, DoT shall be entitled to recover LD charges.

HTC Flyer Due for March Launch Will come pre-loaded with Android 2.3 Gingerbread HTC has been rumored to be working on Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS based tablet since last year. Taiwanese news daily DigiTimes reported that according to the sources at the handset component suppliers, HTC plans to start shipping its tablet dubbed The Flyer by March. However, HTC Flyer would run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and would appear as an enlarged version of the HTC Desire. Oh boy, HTC might just do what Samsung did with Galaxy Tab - an enlarged version of the Galaxy S. The tablet will be able to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb once it has been passed on to HTC by Google. So Flyer will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and would be upgradeable to Honeycomb. As per the sources, HTC will partner with an unannounced U.S. telecom carrier and introduce the Flyer tablet in March. The company will introduce two more tablets running Android 3.0 in June this year. Flyer is expected to get some lead before RIM PlayBook and Motorola XOOM which are expected to be launched in March-April timeframe. Courtesy : Techtree

  10. What not to do with your Mobile Phone It is never too late Human beings are like bulbs, not all are equally bright. Sometimes they tend to do things that are strange and totally unnecessary. They pick up a habit of doing something and then they continue to do that whether it makes any sense or not. This is especially true in the world of technology. We all know that guy who constantly refreshes his screen in Windows, even though Windows can do it automatically. There are many such things that people do with mobile phones as well. Today we will list some of them. Don't cover the microphone People have this habit - something they picked up while using landline phones - of covering the microphone when they have to interrupt a phone conversation to speak to someone next to them. Although this worked fine with old landline phones, as you could cover the entire microphone with your palm, it does not work on modern phones. They have a much more sensitive microphone, which can work even when blocked. Also, due to their design, the mic isn't always easy to block. A better thing to do is use two functions that all phones come with. The first option is to use Hold; here the person on the other side is informed that the caller has put them on hold, while they are made to listen to music. The other option is to use mute, where the microphone is deactivated and the person on the other side would have no idea what you are speaking. Both these methods are 100% effective at preventing the person on the other side knowing that you are swearing at him. Yet, people like to hold the base of their phone as if they are trying to plug a leak when there are simpler alternatives available. Don't hold the handsfree mic close to your face This is another situation where people underestimate the strength of the microphone. There is a reason it is called a handsfree headset. If you are going to hold the microphone to your mouth all the time then it defeats the purpose of using a handsfree headset. Just because it seems right to you doesn't mean you should do it. Bringing it close to your face wouldn't make any difference to the clarity of your voice. The microphones in handsfree headsets are very powerful and are designed to pick your voice up even when they are hanging close to your chest. I can understand when you are in a very noisy environment, where bringing it close enough for it to catch your spit can make you more audible to the person on the other side but some people have a habit of holding the mic to their mouth all the time. I wonder what they do when they wear a Bluetooth headset. I'm sure they would want to pull it off and shove it down their throats every time they want to speak! Stop talking loudly on the phone You people have got to stop underestimating the power of the microphone! Some people are so loud on the phone that if the call were to accidentally disconnect the person on the other side wouldn't know, as he would still be able to hear your voice. They invented telephone so people don't have to shout like that anymore, just like they invented email, so people don't have to send messages via pigeons. Although it seems somebody forgot to tell the pigeons that they are fired as they still tend to hang around people's homes. Remove that sticker from your phone's display The thin transparent sheet that you get on your phone's display is there to protect it while it is being brought to you from the factory. After that you are supposed to remove it. This is why some manufacturers even put some text or images on it so that people would have no choice but to remove them. Because they know people who have enough money to buy stuff won't always be very smart. These films, despite being transparent, tend to distort the image quality of the display. If it's a touchscreen, it reduces the touch response of the display. Not to mention the fact that it makes the phone look ugly. People are probably afraid that if they remove the film, the display will attract scratches, which would be bad because it would distort the image quality of the display and make the phone look ugly. I wonder what else can do that. Don't put your phones in ugly cases Some people buy ultra-expensive and ultra-stylish phones and then put them in ultra-ugly cases. I really don't understand the point of a case to begin with. I mean, do you walk around covered in bubble wrap just to protect yourself from being damaged? Then why put your phone through a similarly ridiculous ordeal? Accidents can happen; it would probably get scratched if it were to fall but really, would it look any uglier than it would in that case? Don't put your phone's ringtone on max Unless you are stone deaf, live on an airfield or have a phone that is about as loud as an angry mosquito, you have no reason to have your ringtone volume at full blast. It can be very annoying when a phone suddenly starts blaring at ear piercing volumes (especially those cheap little good for nothing Chinese phones), not to mention startling, especially for those suffering from ligyrophobia. So choose a profile with a lower volume when you are between fellow humans and/or animals that attack when they hear sudden loud sounds. Stop typing with just one thumb Oh you poor thing, didn't you know you can use the thumb on your other hand to do something other than twiddling it? Well, you can use it, as it works just like the thumb on your other hand. Try it sometime. Don't use a picture of yourself as wallpaper of your own phone Are you narcissistic, or are you one of those who forget everything, including how you look. Do you need your phone to remind you how you look? No? Then stop doing it. It's weird. Trust me. Don't wait till the battery is dead to charge it Some people have this habit of waiting till the battery loses all its juice before charging it. They probably think it will damage the battery if they charge it when it's not empty. I know because I used to be one of them. But modern Li-Ion batteries don't require you to wait until it is dead for you to charge it. In fact, they tend to last longer when you don't wait till the end to charge them and instead keep charging them whenever you can. So don't be that guy who waits till the battery is dead to charge it. Don't ask people for chargers If you constantly find yourself asking your colleagues at work for a charger then it is time you invest in one and keep it in office. They aren't even that expensive, so you have little excuse not to get one. The same goes for USB data cables. And I really hope some my colleagues at office are reading this. Yeah, you. Don't ask for a charger or data cable again. Don't keep your phone somewhere and then go wandering off Sometimes people just keep their phone somewhere and then go wandering off. When a call comes, and it usually does, the phone starts playing some obnoxious ringtone. Even if the ringtone isn't obnoxious, it is annoying for the people around. They don't know what to do. They can't pick up the phone because it isn't theirs nor can they make it shut up. Why can't people just carry their phones around with them? Is it really that heavy that you can't keep it on yourself at all times? And if you are going to keep it somewhere, at least put it on silent profile, so you don't annoy people close to you when a call comes in. Don't use an obnoxious ringtone Your ringtone is heard by everyone around you. So make sure you don't select one that makes people around you cringe every time your phone rings. You don't want to be the butt of other people's jokes when you are not around. You don't want to be that guy with the crazy ringtone. Don't give a missed call and expect people to call you back I will not call you back if you do that to me. It just goes to show how much of a cheapskate you are, especially considering how low call rates in India are. It is understandable if you are on prepaid and are really low on cash at the moment to make a long call, but otherwise you are just being a cheapskate and I hate you. Don't call when it isn't urgent or if it can fit in an SMS A call requires urgent attention from the person receiving it. If the matter is trivial, it makes more sense to just send it over SMS, so that the person on the other side can view it at leisure. Also, if you know a call is going to end within ten seconds, it is again better to send an SMS. There is a reason mankind invented that technology. Do let us know if you know any more such things that people should definitely stop doing with their phones. Also, if you do any of the things mentioned above, remember, there is still time. 18. The Heaven - Gods Own Country -Munnar -Kerala

Last year in November my son went to Cochin, Munnar and Alleppey on trip organised by his school. As seen in the pics Munnar and Alleppey both seems to be the gateway to heaven. Will be planning a trip with my family to Munnar and Alleppey next year.
  19. Rajan Bhai, me and my son use TATA Docomo also apart from Vodafone. If you are used to Vodafone GPRS then you will hardly like Docomo Gprs speed in Mumbai. Last year when Docomo was launched, at that time the Gprs speeds were really good, but now a days its not that good. If you have to check mails etc., then its okay otherwise for downloading other stuffs or login to forums etc. its not good at all. I tested both Vodafone and Docomo altogether, by downloading the same file at the same time on both networks. Example, a 5 MB file on Vodafone Edge Network downloads in approx. 3 minutes, but the same file took more then 15 minutes on Docomo. In Mumbai, Vodafone's GPRS is the best. From the last couple of months I'm moderating the forum in daytime also from my Edge Enabled Nokia E63 with robust speeds. So, if you want speed then Vodafone could be the best option dear Rajan Brother.
  20. Vodafone tax row will be settled amicably: Britain 19 January l The Economic Times l New Delhi The British government is hopeful that the three-year old dispute of Vodafone's joint venture in India involving a tax claim of over Rs.11,000 crore ($2.5 billion) will be settled amicably, a British official said Wednesday. 'Vodafone is one of the important companies in India. Its joint venture is rapidly growing and like other foreign investors they need to have stability in tax regime,' said Vince Cable, Britain's secretary of state for business, innovation and skills. Talking to reporters here after the annual meeting of the India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), Cable said the British government was expecting a good outcome of the dispute. 'We have discussed this in a very amicable way and look forward to a good outcome,' Cable said without elaborating as the case was sub judice. India's income-tax department has raised a demand of over Rs.11,000 crore on Vodafone International Holdings , a unit of the world's largest telecom operator Vodafone Group Plc , on account of its $11-billion deal to acquire Indian telecom firm Hutchison Essar in 2007. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said India would continue to liberalise policies to attract more foreign investment. 'Indian foreign direct investment (FDI) policy regime is robust, stable and irreversable. That is something which is very reassuring and comforting for our partners,' Sharma told reporters after co-chairing the JETCO meet here. He said India would emerge as the second most favoured FDI destinations in the world after China in the coming years. Sharma said several British companies are likely to increase their investments in India. 'Two-way investments are healthy with $18 billion UK investment in India and much more are in the pipeline. Similarly $20 billion of Indian investments have already been made in British economy,' he said. On India-Britain bilateral trade, Sharma said it had crossed $10 billion in 2010. 'According to the initial figures that we have, bilateral trade between India and UK has once again reached $10 billion,' trade minister added.
  21. Leaks force RIM to break talks with govt 20th January l The Economic Times l New Delhi Canada-based Research in Motion , the maker of BlackBerry smartphones, has temporarily suspended its dialogue with the government on security issues saying leakage of sensitive discussions between the company and the Indian authorities had undermined the confidence needed for such talks. Endorsing RIM’s stance, Canada has complained to Home Secretary GK Pillai that confidential information submitted by the smartphone company was being leaked to the media, and a top executive from the cellphone company would visit New Delhi and assess the situation (on the leaks) before talks resume. Canadian High Commissioner Stewart Beck, in his communication to Pillai, expressed ‘complete disbelief’ that confidential minutes of a meeting between RIM and officials of the home and telecomsministries wer the source for ‘damaging articles’ in the Indian media recently. He also said media leaks had “dogged the sensitive discussions” between RIM and the Indian government on security-related issues since early 2008. The communication said these ‘leaks’, in addition to being ‘unhelpful’, could not “compare to the unprecedented damage caused by leaking of confidential documents”, and its impact was “undermining the confidence necessary for sensitive negotiations”. ET had reported on January 6 that RIM had sought an additional 18-24 months, up to January-end, 2013, to address concerns of security agencies here. Indian security agencies have been demanding encryption keys to BlackBerry’scorporate email services. Even as RIM sought additional time, it has asked the Indian government not to ban its services in the interim period. The report was based on the minutes of the December 29 meeting between RIM and home and telecom ministry officials. RIM has been involved in a three-year battle with Indian security agencies which have been demanding access to BlackBerry communications, citing national security threats. Last week, RIM said it has given Indian security agencies a key to enable access to its eponymous messenger and public email, but reiterated its inability to provide access to its corporate email services.
