Nokia's Future Smartphone UI Leaked No confirmation from Nokia The picture you see below is believed to be a version of Nokia's "on the cards" UI. While the phone itself is drool-worthy, folks at Nokia seem to have confirmed that no such handset is about to see the light of day. Sigh! The good news, however, is that the UI you see in the simulated image is a preview of things to come. While it seems to be a thoroughly revamped version of the S60 Fifth edition that is currently a component of the XpressMusic 5800 and the soon to be out N97, the caption alongside the image seems to point towards a possible multitouch interface (missing on S60 as of now). There is also a buzz about the possibility of Nokia adopting the patented "touchless" interface that it was working on. So far, there has been no official word from Nokia regarding the future of this UI. However, recent reports did point out that Nokia will be concentrating on implementing Linux on its high-end smartphones. So, where does that leave this UI? Additionally, with the open source OS expected in 2010, we remain a confused lot as to where this UI/OS would stand in the general scheme of things. We'd love it if this really happens to be a thoroughly revamped S60! It's high time the good ol' S60 got a cosmetic makeover. Courtesy : Techtree

Gsm Players Seek Clarity On Non-voice Revenues !
Honest replied to Honest's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Regulator gives DoT data on RCom Business Line l 8 Dec l New Delhi The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has given the Department of Telecom, a set of data and records relating to revenue reporting by Reliance Communications (RCom). The regulator, while submitting the report, has told DoT that more analysis needs to be done before a conclusion is arrived at in this regard. The Chief Vigilance Commission had earlier asked DoT to investigate whether revenue reporting by the company was according to rules or not. The Cellular Operators Association of India had earlier pointed out to the Government that RCom was showing its income from non-voice services under the Internet licence, even though the facility was being provided through the cellular network. While the GSM camp did not complain against the company, they wanted to know from DoT whether they could also do the same and save on paying higher revenue share to the Government. RCom has maintained that its accounts have been duly audited and certified by internationally recognised auditors and are in full compliance with the prescribed reporting framework. The company had stated that it has a substantial customer base of over one million Internet services subscribers under its ISP licence. Additionally, the company has a subscriber base of over 3 million in rural areas under the USO (Universal Service Obligation) scheme of the Government whose revenues have certain exemption under the policy guidelines While operators do not have to pay any revenue share for income earned from Internet services, they have to pay between 6 and 10 per cent of their annual revenue to the Government from mobile services. -

Unitech, Idea Cellular receive spectrum Economic Times l 8 Dec l New Delhi Real estate giant Unitech, which recently tied up with Norwegian telecom operator Telenor to launch mobile services in India, and Idea Cellular have been alloted 4.4 MHz of spectrum in the 1,800 MHz GSM band, the companies said on Monday. 'The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued the letter to the company's telecom subsidiaries for allotment of 4.4 MHz of spectrum in 1800 MHz GSM band in respect of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Kolkata service areas,' Unitech's official statement said. With this, the company has been allotted initial spectrum in 16 service areas out of total 22 service areas. Idea Cellular said in a separate statement that it has been allotted spectrum in the same bandwidth in respect to Kolkata Metro Service Area. Unitech Wireless, part of the Unitech group, is scheduled to start operations in the second quarter of 2009. Reeling under liquidity crunch, the company earlier said it would mobilise up to Rs.2,500 crore (Rs.25 bn) through sale of some assets and equity to retire part of its Rs.8,000 crore (Rs.80 bn) debt by March 2009. 'We are working on many options to raise funds,' Unitech chairman Ramesh Chandra said, adding it could be through sale of some completed projects or offloading equity at project level to private equity funds. -
New Mobile License With Lock In Period!
Honest replied to Himanshu Singh's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
TRAI paper on 3-Yr lock-in time for promoters'equity in telcos Press Trust of India l 8 Dec l New Delhi Telecom regulator TRAI will soon issue a consultation paper shortly on a proposal by the Department of Telecom for a lock-in period for promoters' equity in telecom companies to get the views of the industry and the experts The government has referred the two issues -- the three-year lock-in period and the spectrum charges with regard to 3G and 2G services-- to the telecom regulator, TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra told PTI. The move gains importance after two new telecom players - Swan and Unitech - sold stakes to foreign companies at high premiums after they were allotted spectrum. The Left parties had accused Telecom Minister A Raja of underselling spectrum and had said it cost the national exchequer around Rs 60,000 crore. The Department of Telecom has proposed a three-year lock- in period for equity in companies to avoid major shareholders selling stake at a premium even before starting the services. It has been alleged that some new telecom companies have sold their promoters' stake at high premium after obtaining the precious spectrum at a nominal price. TRAI has to issue a consultation paper on the lock-in period first and after that whether to go for a limited open house or full open house, would be decided later, he said. "We had earlier given our recommendations on lock-in period in case of mergers and acquisitions but the promoters issue is slightly broader in the context of USAL licence," the Chairman added. "The promoters who have over 10 per cent stake in a company, the question is should it be disallowed for three years from the effective date of licence to sell their equity. The issue of additional equity and if this could be applicable where the issue of transfer of shares", said DoT's letter to TRAI. -

Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
Honest replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
3G auctions may leave most players without spectrum TNN l 8 Dec l New Delhi Contrary to the DoT's public claims, a draft information memorandum prepared by it reveals that no more than four 3G licences will be available for auction in any of the 22 telecom circles, while in 7 circles, it will be even less than four. The telecom ministry has been indicating that it has spectrum for 8 to 10 3G licences per circle. If the memorandum is to be believed, it will lead to a trend towards consolidation rather than an increase in competition in the telecom sector. It’s impact, however, will be felt much after telecom minister A Raja's tenure comes to an end after March 2009. At present, India has 11 to 12 mobile operators per circle, more than any other country in the world (see chart). Existing operators include Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Aircel, Idea, Reliance, Tata Tele, BSNL and MTNL, while Unitech, Swan, Datacom (Videocon), Loop (Ruias) and Shyam (CDMA) are new entrants who are yet to launch services. The government has already guaranteed MTNL and BSNL 3G spectrum in each of their circles. They will not participate in the auction, but will match the highest 3G bid. This leaves Rajasthan and North East without a spectrum, West Bengal where there is spectrum for a single licence, Delhi and Gujarat which have two licences each, UP (West) and Himachal Pradesh with three each and all other circles with a maximum of four licences. This implies that as many as 60% and in some cases even 80% of the operators in most circles will not have access to 3G spectrum. The extreme shortage of 2G spectrum and uneven distribution of 3G licences is bound to force consolidation in the sector within the next 18 months. New entrants will be the most vulnerable as they are pitched against heavyweights like Bharti, Vodafone, BSNL and Tatas. In the final analysis, at least two of the existing operators could also be without any 3G spectrum, sharing their not-so-enviable situation with some of the new entrants. Even Vodafone, which has an impressive global track record of winning auctions, believes bidding will be difficult without a clear line of sight to 3G spectrum. "Planning for spectrum auctions without any certainty on availability of spectrum is a major challenge," accepts Ashim Ghosh of Vodafone. "Price is a factor of demand and supply. If just one slot is up for bidding, the bids are bound to be high. However , if the government announces 6 months later that it has spectrum for more bidders , it is not fair on the original bidder," says a senior executive from Idea. The telecom ministry has said "increasing competition by breaking a cartel" is the driving force behind giving away 120 LoIs with 2G spectrum to new entrants in January 2008. Its strategy for 3G auctions will achieve exactly the reverse by forcing companies to consolidate and reduce the level of competition due to spectrum shortage. The gap between the 3G haves and have-nots will start hurting those who lose out by end 2010. The fate of new entrants also hinges on whether the remaining companies, Datacom and Loop, will find global partners before 3G auctions begin. Amongst new entrants, Etisalat is probably the bestpositioned to beat some of the big Indian competitors. -

BSNL says DoT’s letter unfair Economic Times l 8 Dec l New Delhi State-owned telecom service provider BSNL said that the department of telecommunications’ (DoT) letter last week warning it about dwindling revenues is unfair and that the slowdown has affected earnings of the entire the sector. According to a top BSNL official, the operator is preparing a detailed note in response to DoT’s letter, highlighting the reasons plaguing the PSU’s finances. BSNL has a subscriber base of 40 million and a market share of 13.7%. “The slowdown has affected the entire sector. Almost every company has taken a hit in revenues and we are no exception. Besides, there are other factors also. We are trying to expand our wireless base and we will stabilise,” said a senior BSNL official. BSNL’s revenue fell 23% during the first quarter of the current fiscal. DoT had also said that BSNL’s falling revenues would deeply affect the budgetary estimates for the current fiscal. The BSNL official also said the withdrawal of the access deficit charge (ADC) is one of the reasons for the dent in the revenues. Private operators paid ADC to BSNL to subsidise the state-owned telco’s rural telephony. ADC was removed in October 2008. The government relies heavily on the two state-owned telcos, BSNL and MTNL, for telecom services in rural areas. -
