MP3, camera phone just @ Rs 2,000 RASHMI PRATAP TIMES NEWS NETWORK [TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 07, 2006 12:35:24 AM] MUMBAI: Mobile users may soon have a $45 (Rs 2,000) handset with an MP3 music player and a 1.3 megapixel camera. Qualcomm, the CDMA technology pioneer, is set to change the paradigm of entry-level mobiles, now restricted to voice and text messaging. The wireless giant has developed the Qualcomm Single Chip (QSC) family, which will offer affordable voice and basic multimedia solutions to multiple segments within the entry-level market in India. “Vendors are testing these chips and designing entry-level phones around them. The handsets are likely to be available in India by the end of ‘06 or the first quarter of ‘07,” Qualcomm senior director (strategic marketing) Clint McClellan told ET. Presently, the cheapest handset in India is monophonic and monochromic (black and white). It is priced at Rs 1,700 ($39) and offers only basic features. Within the entry-level segment, there will be three types of handsets. The QSC6010 voice-centric solution will deliver polyphonic ringtones, with optional 14.4 kbps data. The QSC6020 will enable data rates of up to 153 kbps and also support MP3 music player while the QSC6030 solution will have an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera besides other features. While McClellan refused to comment on the pricing of these handsets, industry sources said they could be in the range of $ 40-45. “We are creating these sub-tiers within the low-tier to bridge the digital divide. By offering voice as well as data capability, Qualcomm will not only help increase tele-density but also improve Internet penetration,” Qualcomm India and Saarc president Kanwalinder Singh said. The highlights of these handsets will be affordability, functionality, variety and form factor, he added. Qualcomm’s pre-certification lab in Hyderabad is testing the low-cost mobiles being developed by its handset partners to ensure that they meet the CDMA providers’ requirements. While OEMs take 6 months for testing, it can be done in just about a week in the lab.

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Thursday asked all mobile operators to submit data to prove the viability of the recently announced lifelong pre-paid card offers. The telecom regulator is also issuing a consultation paper to discuss the issue with operators TRAI has questioned the long-term viability and sustainability of these plans especially since most operators have been given a licence for 20 years. It has asked operators whether the lifetime can exceed their balance licence period and if not, would the plans vary in their validity duration. "What will happen to the plans if the traffic patterns and Interconnect Usages Charge regime changes substantially?" TRAI asked. for more news ..... chk....http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2006/01/13/stories/2006011303790800.htm

Reliance Info plans big roll-out Kripa Raman Mumbai , Jan. 11 RELIANCE Infocomm plans an aggressive rollout of its mobile and fixed telephony access network to reach more towns and cities across the country during the next six months. The company, which plans to augment its network to cover 9,000 cities and towns (up from 4,500 currently) across the country, will cover half these additional locations by June , said a senior official with the company. The newer tariff plans and packages that are the trend today will be of great appeal and use to populations in the B and C class cities, said the official. "We need to be where the growth is, where the numbers can come," he said. Moving into smaller towns means that villages in their periphery would also get covered, said the official, according to whom the company has 1 million rural customers, the largest of any private telecom operator in the country. The company's record of experiences shows that the customer potential in the hinterland could be vastly underestimated, said the official. One strong factor is also the availability of information on commodity trade, weather and agricultural data.

BSNL to slash STD rates prior to IndiaOne roll out Wednesday, January 11, 2006 The Hindu Business Line NEW DELHI: With the Government's uniform telephone call rate scheme 'IndiaOne' to start next week, state-owned BSNL is readying itself with a fresh STD rate chart for land-phones which is expected to see a sizeable reduction in tariffs. The IndiaOne uniform STD rates that will set in motion a single rate for STD across the country is expected to kick-off by January 15, sources in BSNL said. Sources said the new plan is expected to reduce mobile STD rates also. Rentals will however remain untouched. IndiaOne, which was to be launched by January 1, was delayed as the tariff plans are yet to be worked out. "Deliberations are on to work out a tariff plan," sources said. The new plan can even have two tariffs, one for local and another for domestic long distance. Meanwhile, Reliance Infocomm became the first private operator to extend the new tariff scheme. It recently announced for its fixed wireless customers a facility enabling them to make calls to any phone anywhere in India for Re 1 a minute. This heralds a new era in the STD calls market with the tariff falling by as much as 50 per cent. The current fixed phone STD rates vary from Rs. 1.80 a minute under certain schemes to the more generic Rs. 2.40 a minute. The tariff for local and intra-circle calls to Reliance phones will be 40 paise a minute under the 'One India' scheme while it will be Re 1 for all other calls. The 'One India' scheme will have a monthly rental of Rs. 499. The zero rental, life time incoming scheme brings the flexibility of mobile tariffs to fixed phones. For a one-time payment of Rs. 2,999, Reliance customers will get life-time incoming free on their fixed phones. The tariff will be Rs. 1.20 per pulse for local calls, with the three-minute pulse to local fixed phones and Reliance phones and 45 second pulse for mobiles in non-metros and 60 seconds pulse applicable for mobiles in metros. - UNI -

MUMBAI: If you have been pinning hopes on the much-talked about “OneIndia” plan to bring down your phone bills beginning January ‘06, then here’s a party pooper. The government is not yet ready with its OneIndia scheme, which will bring tariffs for STD calls on par with local calls The DoT sources, however, said that it would be too premature to expect OneIndia in the next one or two months. “The process is on, but it’ll take time,” they said, without giving any timeframe for the roll out. According to industry analysts, OneIndia can’t be announced until telecom regulator Trai comes out with its recommendations on the Access Deficit Charge (ADC). -
