Effective R-Connect Speeds

Recommended Posts

I have been a regular user of the R-Connect service on my LG RD2030 for the past 1.5 years in Bangalore, and have been using LG Serial Cable to connect to my Desktop.

I just purchased a new laptop, and since it did not have serial ports, I started using a USB cable purchased from Reliance for the same purpose (this cable had worked with a Simputer previously, so I know it works!). I used R-Connect (USB for WinXP) drivers from Relianceinfo.com, installed LG USB converter driver, installed R-connect dialler, restarted and start using the R-Connect dialler.

Here is where the trouble starts.

Connectivity is fine for a minute, after which it flat-lines and the application/windows dialup freezes and I have to kill it. I cannot relogon since windows shows the connection is still in 'Disconnecting' state. The machine wont even power down now and after some trial and error, I realized I have to kill 1 instance of svchost.exe (consuming 19 MB of RAM) before I can restart.

Can anyone help - I have tried everything from reinstalling the connection after deleting the modem and uninstalling the LG USB drivers, but nothing seems to work.

Here is how the ping looks to Yahoo once I connect - note the general failure :D

[the full ping has been included, scrolls quite a bit till the connection starts timing out- the time equivalent is approximately 1 minute]

Pinging www.yahoo.akadns.net [68.142.197.89] with 1 bytes of data:

100% True the only plus point of reliance is it's mobility otherwise BSNL is better than it. Really these people have lowered their standards and charge like giving broadband services.

Hello everyone,

I have a LG LSP 340E phone that is about a year old. It has started to give give a bad voice quality (nothing is clear on it) and the internet speed is pathetic at 10 kilobits per second.

Is something wrong with its internals? For about 7-8 months after its purchase the phone used to be there without any cover mostly and collected dust. Is it possible that what I am facing is because of this?

Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks.

Hey dacodecz, could you please detail some of these tweaks maybe in a howto (on linux and windows)?

Speeds of 10 kbps are not strange to me, I am getting these bl**dy speeds for 10 months now. And no config/virus problems here because i get such speeds on installed windows, linux and linux livecds.

Also I observed this wonderful fact. I am getting normal speeds on my uploads, from 30 kbps to 70 kbps, but it is only the download on which i am stuck at around 10 kbps.

Is there something wrong with the modem circuitry, modem's software level settings, or the problem is at the ISP end (Reliance) itself?

Hi,

I am planning to take RConnect as I am moving to a location where there is no DSL. I currently use Airtel DSL 256kbps, which is pretty good. Can someone tell me if it is worth taking RConnect? How much bandwidth does it really give you in Bangalore?

Also, do they block in VoIP or website or provider? I use VoIP calling through webPhone and Dialpad (both in US) a lot. So that is definitely a concern.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

thanx,

--rohit.

RConnect speed may vary depending on various parameters I believe. 1. Region or Place where you live 2. The plan you take.

I do have Rconnect though I have not signed any specific plans with Reliance and I am getting very poor connection speed yet in comparison with Airtel GPRS it may be good [but Airtel GPRS charges me Rs 250 per month]; still the speed can not replace DSL or Broadband connections.

There is an unlimited package available in Rconnect costs Rs 1500 Per Month but I am hearing some credit limit restriction which might pose some practical issues.

Unless you need mobility plus internet connection together, going for Rconnect may NOT serve your needs and it may be bit expensive as well.

While downloading with LG RD2030, a maximum of 10KBps (80kbps) and while using Samsung SCH N-191 15KBps (120kbps) is available in Kolkata for me.

effectively - on average - 3 to 5 kBps. Does go upto 10-12 kBps now and then.... on average, not more than 5 kBps.

Hi....can give u some info....

I've been using reliance for the past 2 yrs and trust me even though it might be expensive and slower than airtel (256 Kbps), it think its pretty good if u consider the mobility factor and convenience. There might be better services but since you are concerned with Reliance will come back to the topic....

R-connect download speeds are in the range of 13 - 16 kbps constantly over here in bangalore. I'm using LG RD 5130 and download 24/7. I download 6 GBs every week on an average, so download speed is decent. Just a word of advice, go for LG RD 5130 or 6130 with Original data cable and install the 230 kbps driver if u want to achieve these speeds; else u'll have to settle down with 8-10 kbps with the original drivers. Just search for the post, u'll able to find the 230 kbps driver link.

About Voip, I've used dialpad and skype, and to be frank its not awesome by nay means....voice seems to be lost a few times but overall the experience is satisfactory if not good.....Surfing is also fair enough, though not at the speeds of downloading. Overall I'd say its good if u want it as a portable net service otherwise u could look at airtel (Undisputed BEST for their unlimited 256 kbps @ Rs 999/-) or Bsnl Dataone.

Relaince is good if u want unlimited downloads and have no airtel covergae in your area.

For resolving the dormancy problem, just run a ping window or use Deepu's ping utility. (check the R-connect forum posts for it). There isn't any particular method for increasing the speed for LG RD 2030. What average speed are you getting while downloading ?

Sorry for the late response...... Sadly, LG LSP 340E isn't a great phone for R-Connect. It gives a lot of errors and the speed is quite slow. I have no idea for high speed drivers for this phone plus the fact that its serial based makes it even more difficult to be tweaked. I suggets if u use the phone for extensive net surfing, u rather go for LG LSI 110 cordless (could probably excahnge it). It gives max possible speed and u don't need to purchase data cable as well as it uses a generic USB A to B cable. Don't know about the recently launched LG 350R, so can't comment on its performance....

Samsung SCH-191 used to get good reviews for their better R-Connect speed. But it isn't available anymore so you may have to search for a second hand one. Other handsets are more or less the same in terms of R-Connect's speed.

What causes this dormancy problem? Is it due to the phone or a problem with their network? Does this problem exist with Datacards?

i dont think any one can actully match up with 256 k! but a recomendation i am also using dialpad to call singapore almost everyday since past 1 1/2 year, prevoiusly i had dial up with speeds upto 5-6 k and now i have limited 256 k

i say the voice clarity of a call with 256 k is 1000000 times better than a connection lesser than it! so dont leave the connection if you are looking for a voice clarity in your calls. try and take some other ISP which provides u with the same bandwidth

*for my present connection i have 265 k night unlimited + 150 mb day time downloads which is more than enough for voice calls through dialpad considering a call for 30 min would take only 4 - 5 mb downloads

I'v been on BSNL DataOne for about a month now, and much as I hate BSNL, I have to admit that the connection is quite reliable and gives close to the rated speed. And they do test your phone line before giving the connection...

Compared to my nightmarish experience with Hathway, it feels like a godsend!

But BSNL customer support is ultra-pathetic ...if you have a problem, you could be screwed...
