coolrajiv 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 Source - Times of India epaper TIMES NEWS NETWORK India’s wireless market grew at 12% between April-June, adding 19.81 million subscribers, but the growth was marred by declining minutes of usage and flat Arpu’s (average revenues per user). According to a Trai release, the gross subscriber base of wireline and wireless services together crossed the 225 million mark. In a disturbing trend, number of internet subscribers dropped to 9.22 million for the period as compared to 9.27 million during the previous quarter (Jan-April), a decrease of roughly 0.50%. The broadband subscriber base reached 2.42 million, a growth of 3.55%. The teledensity in this period reached 19.86 compared to 18.23 in the previous quarter. The subscriber base for wireless services increased from 165.11 million to 184.92 million, whereas subscriber base of wireline service decreased from 40.75 million to 40.09 million. The number of Public Call Offices (PCOs) in the country increased from 5.55 million to 5.60 million, registering a slight growth of 0.90%. The rural wireline subscriber base decreased to 12.27 million (12.56 million), a negative growth of 2.31%. The rural wireless subscriber base increased to 37.40 million (33.14 million), clocking a growth of 12.85%. The number of Village Public Telephones (VPT) increased to 0.57 million (0.56 million), a growth of 1.79%. The all-India blended ARPU per month of Rs 297 for GSM remained almost at the same level as compared with the figure of Rs 298 per month for the previous quarter. ARPU for postpaid GSM service has shown an increase of 7% to Rs 655 (Rs 613). ARPU for prepaid GSM has shown a slight decline of 0.8% to Rs 248 (Rs 250). In the CDMA segment, the all-India blended ARPU per month for the period is Rs 206 (Rs 202), an increase of 2%. The ARPU for postpaid CDMA service showed an increase of 7.83% to Rs 482, while ARPU for prepaid CDMA remained the same at Rs 168. About 38.02 million Internet subscribers accessed the Internet through the mobile handset (GSM/ CDMA) in this period. BSNL retained its top position with 4.07 million internet subscribers (4.19 million). 2G result in a week New Delhi: The DoT looks set to unveil its crucial and long awaited decisions on change of licence terms and allocation of 2G spectrum soon. According to a senior DoT official, a committee set up to examine Trai’s recommendations of August 29 on the subject, has finalised its report. The report was discussed by the Telecom Commission and more than half of the report was also discussed with telecom minister A Raja, he told TOI. The DoT official indicated that matters were moving fast and that the policy would be announced within a week. However, Raja told ToI that the report had not been finalised and that only informal discussions with senior DoT officials had taken place on Friday.
