Tata`s move, comes after RCom received the government`s nod for similar services. FEVIN-RAJ 61 Report post Posted October 22, 2007 Tata Tele seeks DoT nod for GSM services Press Trust of India / New Delhi October 22, 2007 Tata Teleservices, a CDMA player, today sought the permission of the department of telecom (DoT) for offering GSM-based mobile services across the country. DoT sources said the company has applied for GSM spectrum for 22 circles under its unified access services licence. DoT, last week, allowed cross-over technology under which an operator can offer both CDMA- and GSM-based mobile services with the same licence after paying the entry fee of an UAS licence, which is about Rs 1,660 crore. TTSL's CDMA rival Reliance Communications, an Anil Ambani group firm which had applied for GSM spectrum last year, was given the letter of intent last week for starting pan-India GSM service. The company has also paid the required fee. While RCoM was already offering GSM services under a different licence given to its sister concern Reliance Telecom, it will be a first-time foray for the Tatas into GSM technology. Good if tata comes to GSM, that way consumer will be free from superior but monopolistic CDMA technology and TATA will survive in telecom. But as usual they are last.
