KOLKATA: The Ambanis have appointed Reliance group stalwart Kamal P Nanavaty as national operational head of Reliance Infocomm.

While there’s a tight lid on his actual designation, group circles said Mr Nanavaty will report directly to Reliance group chairman, Mukesh Ambani. An internal circular was issued from Mr Ambani’s office on June 16 to Infocomm’s top management.

Before assuming the reins at Reliance Infocomm, Mr Nanavaty headed the polymers business at Reliance Industries (RIL) and till recently, he was also chief mentor of Reliance IndiaMobile’s Delhi operations.

As the national RIM business head, Mr Nanavaty will work closely with the Reliance group central leadership team that includes the Ambani brothers, Manoj Modi, Anand Jain, Hital Meswani and Nikhil Meswani among others.

Mr Nanavaty has Mr Mukesh Ambani’s mandate to put in place a new national operational team to reinforce Infocomm’s marketing, sales, commercial, services, networks, customer care, HR and revenue assurance/budgetary functions.

Indications are that Infocomm honchos, Prakash Bajpai, BD Khurana, Akhil Gupta, Sanjay Mashruwala, SP Shukla and Harish Shah will be key players in Mr Nanavaty’s management team. The Reliance Infocomm spokesperson declined to comment.

The timing of Mr Nanavaty’s appointment is significant as Infocomm has just embarked on a Rs 5,000-crore network expansion and is slated to make inroads in the lucrative corporate telecom market.
