Himanshu Singh 19 Report post Posted November 23, 2007 Private mobile operators Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular have been found to be involved in renting out their domestic SIM cards in bulk through their agents, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday. "Three cellular service providers -- Vodafone, Airtel and Idea were found to be involved in renting out their domestic SIM cards in bulk through their agents -- Matrix Cellular (International) Service, Falcon Business Resources and Galaxy Rent a Tel and Limco Sales Corporation," Minister of State for Communications and IT Shakeel Ahmad said in a written reply. He said checks are being carried out by Department of Telecom through its Vigilance Technical Monitoring Cells. Certain violations are reported by VTM cells and action for violations would be taken as per the terms and conditions of license agreement after following due procedure, he added. The agents do not seek identity proof from each user. The government had asked mobile companies to verify identity of each user for security purposes.
