World's Toughest Cell Phone on World Tour

For those rugged, outdoorsy, always-dropping-their-mobile folks, here's what could truly be a godsend. A US-based telecom company called Sonim Technologies has recently launched what it claims is the 'world’s toughest' GSM mobile phone.

The phone, called the XP1, is apparently engineered and certified to withstand shock, water, wind, dust, dirt and extreme temperatures. It sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? To set such doubts at rest, the phone is currently on a world tour that began in Sweden.

Tests are being conducted by the company, which has invited journalists, bloggers etc. from around the world to show the versatility and endurance of the phone.

The company offers a three-year warranty on the phone and a lifetime warranty for the phone housing, with immediate in-store replacement if necessary. Apart from its apparent indestructibility, the XP1 is also equipped with Bluetooth and Push-To-Talk.

"The Sonim XP1 is designed with the demanding user in mind, and will fulfill the requirements of a large number of Russian users," said Johan Bergstrom, Senior Director at Sonim Technologies. "As it will also work in very low temperatures, it will be the best choice in several Russian regions. The XP1 is also the only IP-52 classified water/dust-resistant GSM handset commercially available in Russia."

Sonim XP3 Most Rugged Handset Yet

For the rugged outdoors-techie Sonim Technologies has got exactly what you need. Noted for their earlier totally rugged handset that we talked about last year, the XP1, their latest offering is the Sonim XP3 Enduro that takes it up a notch.

The handset, according to the company can be kept underwater (up to 1 meter) for almost 30 minutes. It will also be able to survive a drop from 2 meters onto a concrete surface. Some of the other specs that the company has provided on their website include an IP-57 protection rating and an 810F Military grade rating for salt, fog, humidity, transport and thermal shock. The keyboard buttons are tested to function beyond 500,000 pushes while the Sonim XP3 is capable of operating as long as it's needed under temperatures ranging from -20C to +60C. It also comes with an anti-glare, shock-resistant display. As compared to the previous model, the XP3 is a little thicker (24.6mm) than its predecessor.

The company has provided users with a three year warranty with no questions asked. It’s priced at approximately Rs. 18, 316 (290 Euro) and while it may not be available here right now, we can only hope that in a regularly monsoon drenched country like ours, the company may just decide to ‘drop’ it in on us.

Sonim Joins Forces With Land Rover for 3 New Handsets

Sonim’s rugged XP3 Enduro only made an appearance last week and the company seems to be speeding along with new models getting ready to launch in a tie up with Land Rover.

According to reports, a total of 3 new GSM handsets will emerge out of this collaboration – The Land Rover S1, S2 G4 and one more a little later next year.

Scott Wilson, a designer from Chicago will create the products for the companies. Much like the XP3 Enduro, these handsets will also be hardcore enough to withstand elements like salt, fog, humidity, thermal shock and a 1.6 meter drop onto concrete, no less, from any angle.

The S1 and S2 handsets are scheduled to be launched sometime in the first half of next year. Pricing isn't known yet so stay tuned.
