The new product -- 'MiLeap' would offer users full mobile internet experience combined with PC functionality at an affordable price, HCL Infosystems Chairman and CEO Ajai Chowdhry told reporters in New Delhi. MiLeap would be available in two series -- X and Y, priced at Rs 13,990 and Rs 29,990, respectively. He said the new range of laptops will herald a new category of computing devices and open a wide range of new usage scenarios and application areas. Both the new products would be made in company's manufacturing facility in Pondicherry. It also has another facility in Uttaranchal. The company's two plants have a combined capacity of two million units. When asked how many of the new range of laptops the company expects to sell in the first year of launch, Chowdhry declined to comment. The company would start shipping the units on January 26, 2007. Refusing to divulge details about the revenue model for the low cost laptop, he said, "the volumes. . . there is a huge Indian market, which needs to be tapped." Both the models come with Intel processor and weigh less than a kilogram. The X series would have both the options of flash-based and disk-based storage version with a Linux-based operating system. The high-end Y series would have multiple navigational features such as touch screen, stylus, keyboard and touch buttons with Windows Vista as operating system.
