Rcom May Roll Out 4g Services Bypassing 3g

Recommended Posts

Anil Ambani buys 10% in French WiMax chip-maker

May roll out 4G services with help of Sequans Communications.

Firming up his plans to offer telephony over the WiMax platform, Anil Ambani has acquired a 10 per cent stake in Sequans Communications, a French WiMax chip manufacturer.

MAXIMISING SCOPE

# WiMax is a telecommunications technology providing wireless data over long distances through various modes

# Sequans Communications is a semi-conductor manufacturer and provides system-on-chip solutions for both fixed and mobile WiMax services

# A stake in Sequans will help Reliance Communication access latest technologies and a faster rollout of the technology

# The investment was made through Reliance Technology Ventures (RTVL), the corporate venture capital arm of the Reliance ADAG

The investment was made through Reliance Technology Ventures (RTVL), the corporate venture capital arm of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) and a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Capital.

However, the amount of investment could not be ascertained. WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology providing wireless data over long distances through various modes.

According to analysts, RCom is looking at offering 4G services in the country, bypassing 3G WiMax, like telecom giant Sprint Communications has done in the US. At present, Wimax is being provided over the 2G platform.

A stake in Sequans will help it access latest technologies and a faster rollout of the technology.

Sequans Communications is a semi-conductor manufacturer and provides system-on-chip solutions for both fixed and mobile WiMax services. The company also offers chip technologies for network components like femtocells (small cellular base stations), base stations, subscriber terminals and home gateways, among others.

It also holds the patent for MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output communications), a mobile WiMax technology, and has tie-ups with equipment manufacturers like Taiwan’s TECON.

Global telecom majors such as Alcatel Lucent, Motorola, Societe Generale Asset Management, Add Partners, Cap-Decisif and a clutch of venture capitalists are among others holding stake in the French chip-maker. The WiMax chip market is expected to grow to $2 billion by next financial year.

RTVL officials confirmed the development but declined to provide the exact percentage of stake nor the investment amount.

Reliance Communications (RCom), the telecom and internet venture of Reliance ADAG, is betting big on WiMax and has even launched the services in Pune and Bangalore. It is in the process of rolling out services in 10-12 cities, including the metros.

He he, they are not even keen to provide EVDO, though same can be provided on existing network by investing fraction on software and little bit of hardware.

Both TATA's and Reliance's n/w is 3G-ready(EvDO). Govt. is not allowing them to start the operations.

What do u mean by 3G ready? is it that they have infrastructure ready for 3G?

yes, EVDO works on 800 mHz only (As name says EvDO= Evolution Data only). Means no additional major hardware. Just software upgradation and some hardware changes.

I dont think government comes in picture here. GOvernment can take objection only if they want to use spectrum other than 800 mHz.

Data on mobile is not in government control, as far as I know from TRAI documents.

That is the reason why GSM guys could upgrade from NO DATA to EDGE without any problem. Have you ever heard of any permission issues for EDGE from GPRS? These guys just want to fool all users in name of government.

Then why the big 2 of CDMA not introduce it as yet?

Another question - how did BSNL introduce CDMA EVDO modems and offer 1.8mbps speeds? Why RCOM or TATA could not introduce it yet?

I think GOI permission may be necessary.

I may be wrong.

Is there any official statement or confirmation regarding the launch of EVDO on RCOM?

My dear friends, I think as BSNL already introduced EVDO. The eyes of Reliance and Tata too will now be wide open. And they will definetely roll out EVDO service before BSNL provide EVDO service in roaming. As of now EVDO from BSNL is limited to its specific circle. That means we cannot use these EVDO enabled data modems outside our cirlce. But as soon as roaming facility is available with these EVDO modems, no other operator would match with BSNL.

Now its time for Reliance and Tata to wakeup from their long lasting sleep.

Regards.

One more thing.

BSNL EVDO will work only if you are within 2 kms radius from the tower. This means that there may be no service even within your own city if you move out of range from the tower.

RCOM and TATA are far better off, though BSNL may catch up. The babus of BSNL may have been bought out by you - know - who.

BSNL CDMA, AFAIK is not all that strong, maybe it will improve now that they are going to offer it all over India shortly.

Yes my dear Kumaar, if BSNL have to capture the market for its EVDO services then they have to improve their services. Otherwise they can't fetch up more subscribers for the same.

BSNL is focusing on CDMA for regional services only. THey are not interested in providing cellular services. But they have been torch bearer for technology break thru atleast in affordable wireless 3G and wired high speed data.
