Mobile phone towers pose little risk under ordinary conditions, though it may be a higher risk if you are living right under it (if it is mounted on your roof top).

Why Cell Phone Towers are bad for you

There has been some opposition in erecting mobile towers in Kerala recenlty: http://www.hinduonnet.com/2006/01/13/stori...11321710300.htm

There are certain standards that the companies need to follow, but I'm not sure if they are maintaining it due to the increased competition.

My dear friends, as Arun told above that certain standards should be followed by operators to install the towers. But I don't think they still follow all rules. Many mobile operators do install their towers in illegal locations also. So how can we expect from the operator to follow the rules in erecting the tower, if the operator itself broke the rules in placing it on the right place.

Regards.

dear mr. kamal

to erect a mobile tower, the authoirties of corporation/panchayat granting permision to the same. and also after conducting a pshycial verification from the electrical inspectorate of the area, they can commision to the tower. so kindly rectify your mistake in this matter.

Is the above permission from all really necessary? I do not think so. Maybe in Kerala, it may be required. I have so far not come across any such formalities in Chennai.

@Narayan Kutty

My dear friend, I always think a 100 times before posting any material here. I didn't made any mistake so their is no need to rectify it.

Actually, in front of my eyes a prominent mobile operator's tower had been digged out due to irregularities made in placing the tower at illegal space.

On the other side I want to add what you had told for may be applicable to the land which belongs to regional authorities / governement.

But if an operator place a tower in private land illegaly then what ?

You has rightly said that the proper permission is to be sought from concerned authorities but at the same time I would like to state that this permission is not always taken from authorities from these mobile operators, which is a must. Thats why I had told that many mobile operators install towers in illegal locations / space.

And to prove my words, I think the below mentioned news will be sufficient. In which not a single but almost many operators had been blamed for placing the illegal towers.

And in my point of view try some googling before posting / blaming anyone on the forum. Blaming falsely anyone will only loose your reputation on the forum.

I do respect your views, but the truth is far behind of your knowledge. We are eager to read your views on the forum, do post your views but do not blame anyone until and unless you have sufficient proof my dear friend.

I think after reading this you yourself would feel sorry for your words.

235 illegal mobile towers in the city

January 09, 2008

George Mendonca Navi Mumbai

In the age of mobiles, it is a tug of war amongst various cellular service companies to provide the best service to their customers. To cater to the customer needs, the companies have set up mobile towers atop high-rise buildings so that they can access maximum clarity. A strong competition is prevailing amongst the companies to obtain space on buildings for setting up their mobile tower.

But, in a startling revelation, around 235 mobile towers set up on the buildings in the city are illegal. They have not taken necessary permissions from the civic body. Acting on the multiple complaints made by the residents of various buildings, the municipal commissioner ordered the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) town planning department to look into the matter.

The town-planning department conducted a survey and found only 87 mobile towers legal. He further informed, “Various cellular service companies have set up illegal mobile towers on top of the hills and buildings in the city.

They include renowned companies like Reliance, Vodafone, AirTel, BPL, MTNL, Tata and Idea. To name a few, such towers have been installed on Proviso Tower building in sector16, Kopar Khairane, Arenja Corner, sector-17, Vashi (Airtel), Baba Tower in Kopar Khairane (BPL) and Big Splash, sector-17, Vashi (Vodafone and BPL). Whereas, Tulip company has set up one illegal mobile tower in CBD, VSNL and Sify Internet has set up one each in Vashi and V-Sat Satellite has set up one in Turbhe.”

He further added, “NMMC has issued notices to all the companies, who have installed such illegal mobile towers. Those willing to obtain permissions should pay Rs 10,000 behind every mobile tower.

Till date, NMMC has received 19 such applications for obtaining permissions. Since, the one-month notice period is over, NMMC’s anti-encroachment department will demolish the mobile towers of the companies, who have not obtained the mandatory permissions.

The NMMCs’ town planning officer Jayant Kamble informed, “ Fearless of NMMC’s legal action, the top-notch cellular service companies like Airtel and Tata have challenged the NMMC administration and threatened to drag the civic body to the court.”A major demolition drive is on store for the cellular companies.

Now what do you say my dear friend ? Still you say that I take my words back ? Or you yourself is feeling sorry for blaming me wrongly.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) last week issued notices to the mobile phone towers firms asking them to specify what steps they have taken to ensure the safety of the people living in the locality where towers are installed.

Vodafone Essar removes towers as it fails case in both HC, SC

Press Trust of India l 29 Nov l Thane

Vodafone Essar today removed the mobile phone signal towers following dismissal of their petition against the Thane Municipal Corporation by the Bombay High Court.

Vodafone Essar had challenged the order of the Thane Municipal Corporation to remove the towers in the vicinity of the Thane district court.

Apprehending threat to the society from the cell towers installed by the service providers BPL and Vodafone, a Thane lawyer S S Bhutala had filed a complaint with the Thane Municipal Corporation and wanted the towers be removed.

In his complaint, the lawyer stated that the tower installed just next to the Thane district court premises not only posed a threat of radiation to members of the judiciary, but to hundreds who visit the courts daily.

He wanted the Corporation to remove the towers in the city in the interest of the city itself.

It was pointed out that the towers were mounted on the water tank which posed further threat to the building.

The TMC administration which heard the complaint ordered the BPL and VODAFONE to remove the towers forthwith, else warned that it would pull it down.

The service providers had challenged the order in the Bombay High Court which dismissed the petition and asked the corporation to go ahead with their plans to pull down the towers.

The service providers did not not rest there, instead challenged the order of the High Court in the Apex court which also dismissed the appeal on Friday.

Six months back Reliance people asked permission from me to erect a Reliance GSM tower in my house vacant area. They even promised handsome amount. But fearing this radiation, I refused it. I think I did a wise decision. Already I am speaking in mobile for 2 to 2 and half hours daily. Lately I have started using bluetooth headset to avoid this radiation near my head.

One more fact which I would like to share. The Reliance technical team were often in my office premise to check the network. The senior person shared his view on radiation.

*A tower should never be erected in or near hospitals where babies are born

*He said no Reliance technical team engineer in Madurai region has a boy baby. It may be a coincidence, but he suspects this radition

*He advises never to keep your mobile near your head while sleeping, better to switch off

So try to reduce exposure to the maximum

VERY CORRECT DECISION

it has been pointed out time and agin that these radiations cud have hazardous effects on health ......also since it takes more than a decade for any major illness to develop thru radiation its always advisable to reduce as much exposure as possible......if u have to talk on the phone for more tha 2hrs use a handsfree,,,,,,,i always use a bluetooth handsfree also while sleeping i keep my phone away switched off......many people have this habit of keeping their phones besides them while sleeping ....but it wud increase the exposure to a gr8 extent

Very interesting.. Thanks for sharing this info.

Thats what RimWeb stands for.

Although, im very sure that the heat generated from CDMA phones when spoken for long time, does create headaches & dullness. Its not just psychological.

If everybody starts complaining about the towers next door or in the neighbourhood, then one fine day all cellcos will have to close down. How did the HC and the SC pass such orders? We will have to live only with the good old landlines and be at the mercy of BSNL once again
