coolrajiv 1 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News_b...how/2852975.cms CAG pulls up BSNL for making idle investment of Rs 794 cr NEW DELHI: The Comptroller and Auditor General on Monday rapped state-owned telecom giant BSNL for excess procurement of cables and equipment for landline telephony despite falling subscriber base that led to a loss of whopping Rs 794 crore. "Procurement of cables, exchange equipment and other stores for landline telephony service without considering the declining trend in the subscriber base of landline telephony and the past consumption pattern of stores resulted in excess procurement," said the CAG report, tabled in Parliament. The number of people using mobile in the country has increased considerably over past few years. At the end of the last year, the total wireless subscriber base in India stood at 233.63 million. The report further pointed out that the company had failed to realise revenue worth Rs 35 crore from private telecom firms due to deficiencies in billing and collection charges for infrastructure facilities provided by the company. There were dues worth Rs 72 crore accumulated because of control weakness of the state-run company. Similarly, another state-run telecom service provider, MTNL, which provides services in Delhi and Mumbai, was also plagued by problem of procuring wireless-in-local loop equipment without assessing the requirement, resulting in an expenditure worth Rs 219 crore. kshah 452 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 But CAG always keeps mum over private companies stalling BSNL / MTNL expansion or diversification plans and related tenders challanged in courts and it takes 2-3 years before they get justice. BSNL is doing great service of nation by providing affordable telephony all over India and 794 crore is a small amount for such a huge company. CAG babus may be deviding it with their salary and hence finding it too big.
