Sony Vaio Laptop Without Hard Disk

Sony has done away with hard disk, has introduced VGN-TZ38 laptop in India with flash memory which is light weight, faster, consumes less power (can run 12 hours at a stretch on battery!)

Saw the same ad in today's newspaper.

But memory is only 2GB, this much would be eaten up by the OS itself.

When its a substitute for HDD, it should have been more atleast 8 or 16GB. Prices of flash memory have drastically come down.

2 GB is RAM not the Flash.....

Flash capacity is about 48 GB......

Not useful for home but may be useful for business purpose where your primary system would be desktop......

Looks good, but little overpriced IMO. Anyways, as it is a new product, the prices will come down after some time I think.

Hard Disk will be thing of the past. Once the disk storage reaches 100-200 GB range even mediums like DVD, B-Ray will meet is end of the tunnel sooner than later. Hard Disk will be an external backup storage mechanism detached from work stations.

Technology is moving away from deskstop centric storage mechanisms.

With Cloud computing and centralized storages will ensure technologies like Yahoo/MSN Spaces/Google starget to gain momentum with people sharing their High-end processing power, with super charged server processors under clustured environments supported by Cashing replication mechanisms. People would simply carry a powerful processor which would simply take the information and process it from the server only for consumption but NOT for storing.

Sony always carries Premium beyond the reach of common man in India. It is advisable to wait for more optimal solutions in this end than ending up buying the latest technology but at the entry level!

for the time being i am storing all my data on dvdr discs but just waiting for the blue ray media to become cheaper & affordable.. after blue ray comes the real giant thats HVD that will be the real blockbuster storage device which right now is far away from people's grasp but will be avlb with the end user within next 10 yrs.
