@ksh@T 20 Report post Posted May 21, 2008 MUMBAI: Tata Teleservices (TTSL), India’s fifth-largest telecom operator, will use its existing CDMA infrastructure and retail network for speedy rollout of GSM services across the country. The Tatas-owned operator, with nearly 26 million subscribers, expects to make net profit by December quarter next year. TTSL has received start-up GSM spectrum in Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), Orissa and Kerala and is expected to receive GSM spectrum in the remaining circles later this year. The capex required for GSM launch will not be very high as the company will use its current active and passive infrastructure. “We have the advantage of existing infrastructure, specially on the active side as we have 60,000 km of fiber optic network,” TTSL MD Anil Sardana told ET. Passive infrastructure includes physical sites, buildings, shelters, towers, power supply, and battery backup. Active infrastructure, on the other hand, refers to common antenna, feeder cable, radio access network (RAN), and transmission system. The telco will replace old electronics and get into NGN (next generation network) to improve service offerings. NGN refers to one network that transports all information and services including voice, data and video by encapsulating these into packets. TTSL, along with subsidiary Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra), has 13,500 towers across the country. GSM antennae can be mounted on these CDMA towers, which are already being shared with other operators. Public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) is also in talks with TTSL for sharing infrastructure.
