Tata to Offer Location Based Services

Tata Teleservices has announced a new location-based service that claims to be the first in the country to use Qualcomm's Assisted GPS (A-GPS) technology.

Using Qualcomm's QPoint and gpsOne solutions, this service will allow developers create precise, reliable, and compelling location-based applications. The A-GPS service will leverage triangulation with cellular base stations and satellite-based GPS for precise location in both rural and urban environments, including the inside of buildings and structures.

Tata plans on offering both consumer and enterprise LBS (location based service) applications. Consumer navigation will include friend finder and social networking applications, while enterprise customers will largely benefit from asset- and fleet- tracking applications. The service is expected to be available on multiple handsets from Tata's catalog in late 2008.

Apart from announcing the new service, Tata Teleservices also launched two special tariff vouchers; Power Plus and Platinum Plan. These vouchers will allow users enjoy reduced STD and roaming rates by up to 40 percent, while rates of incoming calls and local calls made to any number while on roaming will be Re 1 per minute.
