Arun 795 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Business Standard Mumbai, June 22, 2008, 0:21 IST There is no 3G spectrum available in certain circles for allocation to CDMA players, according to an internal Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) study — a move that is bound to affect the plans of existing and new operators. The Trai chairman is understood to have written a letter to the Department of Telecommunications' (DoT) secretary, citing concerns on the non-availability of CDMA spectrum in certain circles. The DoT has approved starting 3G services under the 800 Mhz spectrum. A source said the dearth of spectrum in the 800 Mhz band, according to the internal Trai study — in circles such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Orissa — is likely to affect the expansion plans of existing CDMA operators like Reliance Communications (RCom), Tata Teleservices (TTSL) and state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL), which had sought CDMA spectrum for expansion. Moreover, it will also delay the 3G policy and rollout plans, that too at a time when global majors like Vodafone are expected to enter the fray. The 3G spectrum shortage is also likely to impact the high-speed wireless broadband rollout plans of CDMA players, with operators planning a nationwide rollout of Evolution Value Data Optimised (EVDO), which is a high-speed standard for wireless broadband, primarily supported by the 800 mhz band. CDMA players were expecting to get spectrum under the extended GSM (e-GSM) band — 880-890 Mhz band paired with 925-935 Mhz — but this seems unlikely as the GSM operators' body, the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), has laid its claim to it. Honest 836 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 ^^^ Its very bad news my dear friends, for Cdma operators as well as for Cdma users. It seems that all the booty will be leeched by GSM operators first. Regards.

kshah 452 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 I am sure Indian company will not get 3G spectrum, multinationals are greasing babus and politicians in their favour. I wish Anil, join hands with Mukesh and fight with government. To me it seems to be multinationals game.
commonman 228 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 BSNL has already launched EVDO service in several places. So it is definitely not dependent on 3G and can function on existing 2G only. Reliance just does not want to make the capital investment necessary.
KumaarShah 143 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) ^^^ No, I would dis-agree on the above. Maybe BSNL/MTNL being public sector giants were allowed to introduce EVDO without 3G permission which itself is discriminatory. I do not know why RCOM/TATA are not complaining about this unfair permission. Edited June 25, 2008 by KumaarShah
kshah 452 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 BSNL / MTNL are meeting social obligations of providing telecomunication in remote areas where no private operators are interested. EVDO is introduced to increase penetration of internet. Discrimination is must, I believe in interest of wide society like India. We being in urban areas, not at all aware about rural areas. I believe private operators (CDMA especially) do not want to pursue matter with government to allow 3G services in 800 Mhz. CDMA EVDO works best in 450 and 800 Mhz than 1900 Mhz. They want to do frequency SQUATTING.
