@ksh@T 20 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 NEW DELHI: State-run MTNL has floated a Rs 250 crore tender for building a network based on Internet Protocol infrastructure to provide convergent services integrating data, voice and video. The project -- MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) based IP network infrastructure would also be a primary source of Internet bandwidth for ISPs, corporates, institutions, government bodies and retail users. The infrastructure would also allow MTNL to introduce additional services such as bandwidth-on-demand, TV Broadcast with minimum 5,000 channels (SDTV as well as HDTV), VOIP and others over the same network. MTNL sources said the PSU is poised to offer a variety of high-speed data and video services and for that it needs such infrastructure. Earlier this year, Chinese company Huawei rolled out MTNL's MPLS Backbone Network in India to provide the Indian users with a variety of quality carrier-class services including Internet, VoIP and IPTV. The deployment of the MPLS network would help MTNL transform its legacy TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) network into networks which would support more services such as NGN, 3G, VPN (Virtual Private Network). The project is all set to expand extending the MPLS services access to the business users and carry all value added, triple play services, successfully running for select customer on IP MPLS Backbone. Almost all private mobile players have MPLS infrastructure. With its fixed line subscribers base declining and competition from private players on mobile services, MTNL faces an uphill climb to hold on to its fixed-line subscriber base in the competitive Mumbai and New Delhi markets. To beat all these, it has launched commercial IPTV services in India and is betting on the introduction of triple-play services.
