And unlike iphone, you have to pay them to get the unlock code. Btw, did anyone read about the 3G spectrum issues with T-Mobile G1 on other operators?

no news about the 3g issues ....i guess as more and more unlocking solutions will b available v will get to know about the issues

but one thing to note is that 3g on tmobile is much better than 3g on at&*t atleast this is what several videos have shown when iphone was compared to g1 in reference to web browsing

Unlocked Android? No So Fast

T-Mobile has said the buyers of the new G1 Android phone will be able to unlock it 90 days after purchase so it can be used on other networks. But U.S. buyers who think this will let them escape T-Mo’s shaky 3G service are going to be disappointed.

The reason for this is that U.S. carriers in general, and T-Mobile in particular, are in their own world when it comes to 3G technology. To understand what this means, you’ll have to put up with a lot of detail about who does what at which frequencies.

In countries where GSM technology is the standard, that is to say nearly everywhere except the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea, things are simple. Voice and low-speed data services are at 900 and 1800 MHz and 3G runs at 2100.

In countries where GSM technology is the standard, that is to say nearly everywhere except the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea, things are simple. Voice and low-speed data services are at 900 and 1800 MHz and 3G runs at 2100.

In the U.S., T-Mobile and AT&T both use GSM technologies, but there are fundamental incompatibilities in their 3G services. AT&T runs its 2G and 3G services at 850 and 1900 MHz. T-Mobile's 3G service uses 2100 MHz to transmit and 1700 MHz to receive.

The G1 can handle 2G service at 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz, which pretty well covers the world's markets. But 3G comes only at 1700 and 2100 MHz. That takes care of T-Mobile in the U.S. and everyone else in the rest of the world. But it leaves out AT&T's 3G service.

So the bottom line in that you may be able to get your G1 unlocked, but using it for high-speed data in the U.S. on anything but T-Mobile is a non-starter.

though it might not help people in US but then outside US those who dont want to wait for long will still go for unlocking the handset......consider the case in india where g1 will b coming early 2009 .....it doesnt matter about 3g which v still dont have ....so if u unlock it n use it on 2G network here ,it is no different

also this is not the first handset ...there have been other tmobile handsets as well which were unlocked just to use outside US......and the same goes for US many of nokia handsets dont work on 3g frequencies of US but still people buy them from europe or asia and only use it on the 2G NETWORK OF TMOBILE.....infact tmobile is considered by many as theri first choice carrier when it comes to using unlocked handsets from other continents ....they have very little formality to b fulfilled to get a sim as compared to AT&T

The T-Mobile G1 is just the tip of the open-source spear that’s ready to pierce the mobile industry’s heart. Android OS, the open-source Google mobile platform, would be the spear itself.

In a mobile ecosystem filled with proprietary technology and closed platforms, the Android OS represents a breath of fresh air in the mass consumer market. But, as an open-source advocate or developer, how do you come to terms with using a handset that’s powered by an open platform like Android and offers almost unfettered access to third-party application while at the same time locking you out of its file-system? The iPhone, for example, has been hacked to gain access to the file-system, allowing for third-party application installations - the “jailbreak,” if you will.

By jailbreaking a device, you free it’s file-system from lock-down, allowing you to add applications and fiddle with your mobile phone as you see fit.

Worry not, T-Mobile G1 and Android OS fans, the intrepid developers over at XDA Developers have found a way to jailbreak the Android OS. The jailbreak allows developers to gain root access of the Android file system.

Here’s how you gain root access on Android OS:

  • Turn on WiFi
  • Get PTerminal from the Android Market
  • Fire up PTerminal
  • Type “cd system” and hit Enter
  • Type “cd bin” and hit Enter
  • “Type “telnetd” and hit Enter
  • Type “netstat” and hit Enter
  • This will display your device’s IP address
  • Now you can telnet into your device’s root using the IP address you just wrote down

Keep in mind, a future Android OS update may likely come along and break this jailbreak method.

Talk about a quick response. Almost as soon as the Android development community happen to stumble upon a jailbreak Google let loose their counter-punch. Google is now pushing out a new Android OS build that patches the current Android jailbreak exploit. The patch should make quick work of closing the security hole that handed over access to the T-Mobile G1’s file-system root.

As Gizmodo points out, Google’s patch to kill the Android jailbreak exploit isn’t as dire as it would be were Apple to seal up the iPhone jailbreak security hole . The Android Market is already quite open to software and Android apps are allowed almost-free reign over the T-Mobile G1’s (as well as future Android devices) hardware. While Apple iPhone users have to resort to the jailbreak underground to get at applications that Apple would never allow to hit the AppStore, Android users can expect to see fully functional application in the Android Market.

The new Android OS RC30 update is being rolled out as we speak and, by the sound of it, Google is working to make sure T-Mobile G1 owners get the update as soon as possible.

We’ve been notified of this issue (Jailbreaking of Android) and have developed a fix. We’re currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes.

The update is being rolled out OTA (over-the-air) as we speak, so keep an eye out for an automatic update notification on your T-Mobile G1.

Android Bug Reboots Phone Every Time You Type "Reboot"

The latest big bug discovered in Android has to be one of the craziest that's shipped with a phone. Basically, Android invisibly interprets every word as a command and executes it with "superuser privileges." If you open up your keyboard and type r-e-b-o-o-t, your G1 will, yep, reboot.

(It'll do this with any other command too, so stay away from combinations of rm and rf.) The bug affects any phone with firmware version 1.0 TC4-RC29 or earlier. A lot of people should've had already gotten the RC30 update pushed to them (our phone has), but since they go out sorta haphazardly, you could be stuck with it for a little bit. The hilarity potential of rebooting your friend's phone over and over kinda makes this worth it though.

Video: Adobe Flash 10 Running on G1

95433_matter.JPG

iPhone watch out!

The ARM's technology collaboration with Adobe was not the only highlight of the Adobe MAX 2008 developer conference. Adobe also showed what the Flash 10 would do on an ARM powered HTC G1.

The verdict? Apart from some glitches, the work-in-progress product looks good. I am sure the final product will be much better than what we are seeing it now. No word on the release but when it comes out, it will be interesting to know the impact of G1 with Flash as compared to iPhone without Flash.

G1 Supports Multi-Touch: A Glimpse

95600_matter.jpg

Wannabes wait for promised source code

HTC G1's multi-touch capability is not a secret anymore. To prove a point, RyeBrye recoded the source code so that the G1 touchscreen would accept multi-touch gestures.

Instead of utilizing a long and time-consuming process, RyeBrye decided to modify the Synaptics touchscreen driver that allowed /dev/tsout to be read by the Java layer on the G1. The Java layer is where the Android applications are installed. The output shown on the video is not lag-free, but he definitely proved his point.

RyeBrye has promised to release the source code for all the wannabes who want the sophistication of the multi-touch application on their G1. However, if you're expecting multi-touch features from Google, you may have to face disappointment as the giant won't jeopardize itself and do something that may involve it in multi-touch patent issues.

T-Mobile G1: Your Cold Virus Tracker

96067_matter.JPG

New program predicts cold outbreaks

Matrixx Initiatives, an Arizona based company, has released a program for the G1 that is designed to predict flu and cold outbreaks in an area and help people stay away from "affected areas".

Matrixx is a renowned maker of 'over the counter' drugs in the US and sells its products under the brand name Zicam.

The program will warn the user of the phone how many people in an area are sneezing and have been affected by the cold virus. That apart, the program will also use data from Surveillance Data that will estimate the percentage of people who might be having respiratory illnesses in your area. Depending on the number of cases reported, the program will assign a risk potential label and will classify areas into "low", "moderate" or "high" risk level areas.

Users will also be able to search for risk levels in other areas in case of a journey there and can hence take necessary steps to keep away from the place till the risk subsides.

The application, called "Companion", will be available for download at the Android Marketplace very soon. The company also plans an iPhone version in the near future.

Google Selling Unlocked G1 Phones in India

96192_matter.JPG

To developers only

Christmas has arrived early, at least for the G1 developers. Google has revealed Android Dev Phone 1, the SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked variant of the G1 phone especially for the developers in many countries, including India. To be eligible for the phone, one needs to register as an Android developer on the Android Market site for a one-time fee of $25.

After the first step, the developer can buy the phone by clicking on the Purchase link. Google is however restricting the phone sales to one phone per developer account.

It is priced at $399 and will be available for purchase in 18 countries like US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Hungary.

The unlocked phone ships with a system image that works flawlessly with Android 1.0 and developers can build custom Android that works with the unlocked bootloader.

That would be $25+$399 + customs + maybe shipping.

Easily around 30K as pointed out by Muffadal earlier.
