dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 I did it from a 4GB USB Flash drive, process is slightly complicated but I will explain to you and send u required files by email... If u require u can also purchase an USB optical drive with it - costs around 1100+700 for case for Samsung DVD Writer, but it is bulky and requires an external power source; I bought the ultra portable Enter DVD Writer for 2800/- very sleek and small and works from just 1 USB port on the AAO. It is not compulsory to go for the Optical Drive, if u have networked ur home/office by a Wireless Router (as I have done) and I used my other Laptops DVD Drive to install Office and Corel etc; just installed fine by putting CD/DVD in the other computer and installed on my AAO. And I have most of my Softwares on my 250 GB External HDD (Seagate FreeAgent Go), either installer dumps, or ISOs which I use with Daemon Tools. Just dont forget to delete all partitions on the Linux disk, and I mean ALL and make a fresh install of XP from the external CD that u have got... If u want u can play around with Linux for a few days; its got Firefox for browsing; but my trackpad/mouse got hanged when I tried to slow the default settings, had to do linux level programming to get it back .... but overall I couldnt get the hang of linux, the learning curve is just too big.... dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 Thanks for the suggestion Manish, and I am a fan of all open source codes and os, but as things stand at the moment there are lots of compatibility issues, learning issues, hardware issues with linux. By default AAO uses Linpus Linux and has got its own User Interface. Acer has also released the open source code of its version of linpus (i can give the link should anybody require), but Linux still has a long way to go.... Therefore I was suggesting xp, otherwise once these teething problems are solved in linux and we get one standard version (BTW I am confused by the no. of versions available in linux), I might give a serious go ahead.... sohail 1 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 It has got the latest Atom processor and and I am using it for general browsing, editing (word etc.), coreldraw 12, Autocad 2006, Photoshop 7. I have used all these programs without feeling a need to go back to my core2duo notebook. Though theoritically Atom processor is not recommended for high end graphics intensive applications, but I didnt feel much difference in performance. If there's anything else..... Major Difference between these distributions are the initial softwares they package with them. The linux distributions which are preloaded are compiled by the manufactors. many windows ppl donot like them. Most of the linux distributions u can try without actually installing it on the HDD. If u want to try linux download a linux distubution (linke Ubuntu/kubuntu or OpenSuse 11 or gOS, PCLinux 2008), burn it on a CD/DVD RW, and boot from an USB Drive, try the Live version without installing it. you can also look at the corresponding netbook fans form, where someone would have released preconfigured linux distribution, they will be for better than the preinstalled one and they will have all the softwares. Another thing is that the 160 GB 6cell model is now available which will give u a battery life of 6 hours - now thats equivalent to the high end 1Lac noteboooks flying around.... A Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Netbook with few changes in comparison to AA1. * 10.1" (instead of 8.9" of AA1) * 160 GB (Also in Newer models of AA1) * Normal Mouse Buttons (Below Touch Pad not left, right like AA1) * Finishing not as good as AA1 The price is Rs.25,000/- and TATA-Indicom Plug2Surf USB Modem absolutely free (no hidden charge). It comes with Windows XP pre-installed. Has anybody used it? What do u suggest friends, Lenovo is more impressive or Acer, as a brand). With the same body dimensions, 8.9" screen is better or 10.1"? I think 10.1". Now I am confused. Also, I have been using normal mouse buttons for last 5 years now on my laptops. Please suggest which one should I go for. Right now Lenovo Notebooks are not of the same quality that IBM ones used to be... specially in India where they are specialising in low cost notebooks... Search International Forums for this piece as I have very little knowledge about it + u would be paying 5000/- extra + size factor + weight, Battery Life, portability, resolution of both screens I think would be same, check actual brightness of screen physically (because Acer is very sharp), mouse buttons I have been using and it is not a problem at all, service center near u, is it a bestseller abroad like sold out at Walmart etc..., kindly crosscheck. OS hardly matters though, I have to use XP on either of them. I will not pay even 500 Rs. for that. And they are give TATA Plug2Surf USB Modem. That should also be of 2k. So the only difference is 2k. For 2k, I am getting 10.1", Normal Mouse Buttons and Lenovo Brand. I will again go and compare the brightness of both the models tomorrow. (E-Zone is in my office building and Croma is in adjoining building. ). Today, I went their with a friend who wanted to buy some gifts for Diwali. I will keep you guys updating... mgdelhi 192 Report post Posted October 22, 2008 Today, I went to Croma to buy Lenovo IdeaPad S10. I compared the brightness/contrast of Lenovo S10 and AA1. AA1 was much better than Lenovo. I checked the brightness and with WebCam on on the Netbooks putting them together. Lenovo was looking dull in comparison of AA1. Croma has a new Diwali offer. They are giving an external DVD Writer free with AA1 for Rs.23,000/- (WinXP/120GB Model). So confusion is still there. If I go for AA1, I'll buy 160GB Model from elsewhere for 21k or less. External DVD writer (Samsung) is 1050+ 700 for case=1750/- AAO Linux 120GB is 19,500/- 160GB is 20,500/-, 23000/- for 160Gb with XP, SAVE CASH, Chroma is not going to give anything extra except air conditioned shopping experience for some extra bucks... Also I would suggest u spend a little extra and go for original XP Model (from Chroma or from Nehru Place), because Microsoft is getting stricter and upgrading its Non Genuine tracking system, better have piece of mind and full updates compatibility with genuine XP onboard ..... Though u would loose some HD space due to original XP being put in an extra partition...
