Honest 836 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 Swan latest to join list of GSM telecom operators in Delhi 28 Aug 2008, 1840 hrs IST, PTI NEW DELHI: A little known telecom aspirant, Swan, has been awarded start-up GSM spectrum in the coveted Delhi circle that had room for only one extra player. Swan will now join the league of leading GSM telecom operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Essar, Idea, and MTNL. Promoted by Dynamix Balwa Group of companies with interest in hospitality and real estate, Swan Telecom beat other aspirants including Datacom, Unitech, Loop Telecom and Tata Teleservices. Reliance Communications has already been allotted GSM spectrum under the dual technology clause. Separately, four of the above mentioned new players have been allotted start-up GSM spectrum of 4.4 MHz in the circle of Madhya Pradesh, official sources said, adding that the government was looking at some more circles, including Mumbai and Maharashtra. Swan Telecom was in the news for its reported association with Anil Ambani group company RCOM, which was said to hold 9.9 per cent stake in it at the time of applying for licence last year. RCOM officials, however, said the company does not hold stake in Swan telecom anymore. With clearance for spectrum in Madhya Pradesh and partly in Delhi, the competition in GSM mobile telephony is bound to increase, as Communication and IT Minister A Raja has already distributed radio frequency in five circles of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Orrisa. Honest 836 Report post Posted September 23, 2008 Swan Telecom to start services in 2009 - MD 23 Sep, 2008, 1625 hrs IST, REUTERS NEW DELHI: India's Swan Telecom, in which Emirates Telecommunications Corp has bought a 45 per cent stake for around $900 million, plans to launch its first telecoms operation during the April-June quarter of 2009, its managing director said on Tuesday. "As of today, we have got spectrum in 10 circles. We will be launching our first operation in the first quarter of next financial year," Shahid Balwa told Reuters. India's financial year runs from April to March. The spectrum in 10 circles includes the lucrative Delhi service area, he said. Swan has telecoms licences for 13 of India's 22 service areas later. Honest 836 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 Swan Telecom may buy Allianz Infra's licences 25 Sep, 2008, 0129 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: After offloading a 45% stake to UAE’s Etisalat for $900 million, Swan Telecom is set to acquire the mobile licences held by Allianz Infratech. The deal, which may run into a couple of hundred crores, is likely to be announced within a fortnight, according to industry sources. Allianz had applied for telecom licences on a pan-India level but was given permission to launch services in only two circles, Madhya Pradesh & Bihar. Swan, which has bagged licences to operate in 13 of the 22 telecom zones in India, is not present in these two circles. Allianz Infratech is promoted by four individuals-aviation entrepreneur Ajay Singh, Ashish Singh, Praveen Singh and Ashish Deora, who hold 25% each in the company. Following the deal, Swan will be able to provide telecom services in 15 circles covering over a billion people. However, when contacted, Swan managing director Shahid Balwa denied the development. He, however, admitted that Swan would make an acquisition to extend its footprint in India, while refusing to divulge further details. After the Etisalat deal, Mr Balwa had told ET that Swan would launch mobile services in the first quarter of 2009, adding that the company was in talks with existing operators and stand-alone tower companies for infrastructure sharing. Swan is one of the seven companies that was successful in winning GSM licences earlier this year. After the deal, Allianz would be the first of the new entrants to sell out. It’s not clear under the current merger and acquisition norms in telecom whether a new player like Allianz can sell out. Early this year, Allianz Infratech failed to make the cut to bag a pan-India telecom licence as its net worth was lower than the mandated Rs 1,350 crore. It was later awarded licences for only two circles. While the company paid about Rs 30 crore as entry fee for these two circles, the value of these licences would be multiples of that amount. For instance, Swan paid about Rs 1,400 crore for its licences in 13 circles earlier this year. The company is now worth $2 billion or Rs 8,800 crore, based on the valuation in the Etisalat deal. Honest 836 Report post Posted September 26, 2008 Swan Telecom gets nod for long distance & Net services 27 Sep, 2008, 0042 hrs IST, ET NEW DELHI: Following its $900 million deal with UAE’s Etisalat, Swan Telecom has now received a further boost. It has got the department of telecom’s nod to offer both national and international long distance (NLD & ILD) services, in addition to getting the government’s nod to operate as an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in India. These three additional licences will enable Swan to offer the complete array of telecom services—from mobile to fixedline to carrying voice and data to Internet services. When contacted, a source in Swan confirmed the development and said, “We have got letters of intent (LoIs) from the government to offer both national and international long distance services. We have also received an LoI for the Internet Service Provider’s licence. Since we have got the government clearance, we now have to pay the entry fee to get these licences. We will complete these procedures next week. We are formulating strategy to launch these offerings in India.” The Swan source also added that the company would get into tie-ups with NLD operators and use their infrastructure. “There is plenty of optic fibre in the country. We will, therefore, not duplicate this infrastructure. We will opting for the most effective strategy,” the executive said. The business generated by the long distance segment in India is estimated to be worth over Rs 10,000 core annually. All Indian telcos hold NLD and ILD licences, while some of them such as Bharti Airtel and state-owned telcos BSNL and MTNL are also present in the ISP space. In addition to Indian players, Swan will also have to compete with international majors like Orange (France Telecom), AT&T, British Telecom (BT), Cable & Wireless and Verizon, all of whom have recently got the government’s nod to offer both national and international long distance services in India. While all existing service providers and even non-mobile operators such as Gail, PowerGrid, Railtel, Tulip, HCL Infinet hold long-distance licences, this segment is dominated by the four bigwigs — Bharti Airtel, Tata Communications, BSNL and Reliance Communications. Just days earlier, Swan had announced that it was offloading a 45% stake to UAE’s Etisalat for $900 million. I wonder how Rcom will fight MNP heat, when their customers will throw handsets and run to other operators, with 93 series.
