Reliance to cut post-paid tariffs, too

By Business Correspondent

Mid-day

At a time when owning a prepaid GSM cell phone is becoming increasingly expensive, Reliance Infocomm has made its prepaid tariff cheaper than its post paid tariff. The company now plans to cut its post paid tariffs as well.

“We plan to introduce new tariffs for the post paid segment in the second half of this month,” says S P Shukla, head, wireless products and services, Reliance Infocomm.

Before the rate cuts, RIM post paid tariffs were 40 per cent cheaper compared to the prepaid tariffs.

While other GSM operators have hiked rates for prepaid users, Reliance Infocomm has slashed its rates aiming to cross the one crore mark of users.

“With the launch of this prepaid hungama, we intend to gather a dominant subscriber base in the prepaid segment,” says Shukla.

Reliance’s new prepaid tariff is applicable on new vouchers worth Rs 325 or more purchased on or after August 15.

Prepaid users typically account for almost 75 per cent of the GSM cellular market. But in the case of RIM, these account for a minority of its user base.

“We will introduce another handset in September and subsequently add a new handset every month for the next 12 months,” says Shukla. -_-

That is great news! Hope it includes their SMS tariffs too. :(

More handset options are desperately needed and flexibility with upgrade options like from b/w to b/w. And what would be really usefull is flexibility in allowing customers to change from pre to post-paid and vice versa as per his current requirement.

As it is one is saddled with an instrument which one cant use with any other service. Flexibility within the same service is the least one can expect.
